Let’s take a stroll down memory lane.

Remember how you felt on the morning of November 9, 2016? Shocked? Depressed? Angry? Do you ever want to feel that way again?

Despite all the hype, the role of ‘the resistance’ against the Trump regime hasn’t been anything like it’s imagined in fictional portrayals of people bravely fighting back against evil and oppression.

The last two years have been a long slog. The banality, the naked greed, and near-complete lack of empathy coming out of Washington was worse than (almost) anyone could have expected.

We’ve had some victories, staged some jumbo-sized protests, had thousands of non-so big events, won some court cases, and made plenty of mistakes. The two most important lessons I hope we’ve learned are appreciating the power of women and the absolute value of human-to-human contact.

So it seems appropriate that this mid-term election season will end in San Diego where it’s most powerful movement began: on the street in front of Darrell Issa’s office.

The final get-out-the-vote rally is set for 10am on Tuesday, November 6th, at 1800 Thibodo Road #310 in Vista. Remember to bring a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Here are this week’s voting helpers, and calendar of events:

Endorsement Lists/ Voter Guides:

San Diego County Democratic Party
San Diego County Republican Party (I’m assuming you’re curious about who NOT to vote for)
Courage Campaign has a chart listing 10 liberal/progressive/labor organizations with positions on the 11 State Ballot Propositions.
CALmatters has an interactive site covering the California State Propositions
Voice of San Diego –podcast explaining state ballot propositions, plus a guide to local measures.
San Diego Union-Tribune
San Diego Indivisible Downtown Midterm Voter Guide
Defending Our Future: Indivisible in CA 52nd District -spreadsheet comparing endorsements by local publications and organizations.

San Diego City Beat
San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council
San Diego Democratic Socialists of America

Finally, may I suggest The San Diego Free Press General Election Progressive Voter Guide, featuring websites, social media links plus more than three dozen candidate endorsements, along with yea or nay on 23 state, county, and city propositions. Don’t vote without it.

Also, for those of you with burning questions about the judges on your ballots: An Explainer on Electing Judges in California, including suggestions.

The November 2018 Cheat Sheet and Progressive Voter Kit has a little bit of everything, from our endorsements in a printable format, other voter guide info, and answers to questions about the process of voting.

If you want to know who and what will be on the ballot you’re going to cast:  View your sample ballot here by plugging in your address.

Not sure if you’re registered? Check here.

Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.

Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar:  I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.

Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed.  In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Won’t Be Erased March And Rally – San Diego

Saturday, October 27, 9am
Waterfront Park
1600 Pacific Highway
For More Information
Hosted by TransFamily Support Services and 5 others

The San Diego trans community has spoken: Trans People #WontBeErased. On the evening of Monday, October 22nd, a series of meetings led by local orgs, activists, youth, and politicians convened in response to the New York Times exposure of a memo from the Department of Health and Human Services that, if adopted, would change federal civil rights law to “define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with.” Additionally, “any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.” The implications—which could affect health care access, workplace discrimination, legal documents, and even travel, for over a million people—are terrifying and unacceptable.

What emerged from the meetings is a community response spanning two days that will involve a rally, teach-in, and march. These events are intended to educate and mobilize allies, as well as amplify the voices of trans community members. The San Diego LGBTQ+ community stands united under the banner that trans lives matter, trans rights are human rights, and that trans identities WILL NOT be erased!

Join us Friday, October 26th at The Pride Flag in Hillcrest from 5–6:30pm for a trans teach-in. and on Saturday at 9:00am Won’t Be Erased March and Rally

Housing for All: Socialist Feminist Perspective on Housing

Saturday, November 3, 3pm
San Diego Justice Center
4410 Glacier Avenue #101
For More Information
Hosted by San Diego Justice Center and San Diego PSL

Join us for a night of feminist, socialist discussion on the Housing Issue under capitalism. We are living in a huge housing crisis: In 2017, 553,742 people lived without housing per night. In 2016, 2.3 million eviction notices were filed. Meanwhile, the second quarter of 2018 – the GDP of the United States was $5,100,626 million.  Housing is one of the most fundamental basic necessities, yet here, in the United States – the richest country in the world – hundreds of thousands of people are denied this necessity every day.

Breaking the Chains: A Socialist Perspective on Women’s Liberation discusses the issue of housing under capitalism. We will discuss women fighters like Willana Burroughs, a housing activist during the depression era. We’ll look at why housing insecurity and homelessness are women’s issues. Moreover, we’ll discuss how we continue to fight back against the capitalist system – the system that can both create obscene amounts of wealth, but deny the majority of people the right to live.

We will also be discussing our statewide initiative to repeal the 1995 Costa Hawkins Rental Act, which essentially puts limits on rent control – repealing this would be a huge victory for renters all across California.

Call to Action if Trump Fires Mueller
March for Truth—an organization that is working with dozens of advocacy groups to organize rapid response protests has partnered with MoveOn.org, Public Citizen, Indivisible and many others to prepare emergency ‘Nobody is Above the Law‘ rallies that will happen directly following the firing of the special counsel should it occur. There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.

By firing Mueller or Rosenstein, the president would trigger a full-fledged constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The hours following the firing will determine whether he is proved right.
