The backdrop to the 2018 midterms is essentially one, long, negative campaign by the Trump Administration. Republicans are gleefully embracing Trump and polarizing events. They’re thrilled about voter alienation. After all, no voter suppression tactic is as powerful as stoking voters’ general sense of apathy, hopelessness, and disgust.
Having nothing positive to campaign on, reactionaries are relying upon the time-honored techniques of fear, loathing, and falsehoods. There is no wall. There is no Obamacare replacement. (Although Republicans who voted to dismember it are now claiming to want to protect patients with pre-existing conditions.) There is no infrastructure program. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Republicans once believed would be the centerpiece of their re-election campaign, has given Wall Street a sugar rush and the average four grand bumps promised Americans is nowhere to be seen.
That’s why Ammar Campa-Najjar– a really decent human being–is being portrayed as a terrorist. That’s why Trump’s on the stump ginning up his based about hordes of brown people headed to the border.
There is only one defense against this kind of campaigning. YOU must take personal responsibility to make sure everybody around you votes. Make sure the world knows you voted. Tell everybody. Brag a little.
If it makes you happy, take a picture of your mail-in ballot envelope or your family filling out ballots together and share the heck out of it. And make sure you “like,” “share,” “retweet,” or otherwise encourage others who announce to the world that they’ve voted. If you’re waiting until election day, take a selfie outside your polling place.
It IS, as of January 1, 2017, legal to photograph your ballot in California. But some courtesy (and common sense) is in order. You can’t photograph or video others filling in their ballots and you can’t be disruptive at a polling place.
Need some help voting? I thought you’d never ask.
Vote Smart offers up a wealth of information on elections around the country, with details on 13,849 congressional, gubernatorial, state legislative, statewide, and state judicial contests, along with ballot measures. Categories of information include biographies, voting record, positions, ratings, speeches, and funding. Using this site does require some effort, and the information -particularly that asked of candidates- may not be complete. It’s an all-volunteer effort and goes out of its way to not show bias.
Voter’s Edge works by having you to plug in your address to see research on those candidates and propositions appearing on your ballot. It is a joint project of MapLight and the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (LWVCEF). It strives to be a nonpartisan online guide to elections covering federal, state, and local races in the state of California. Voter’s Edge is the group partnering with KPBS for election information. Information on candidates who do not cooperate with their researchers can be sparse. If you’re looking for judicial candidates, who largely run unopposed, this is the place to look.
Endorsement Lists/ Voter Guides:

Finally, may I suggest The San Diego Free Press General Election Progressive Voter Guide, featuring websites, social media links plus more than three dozen candidate endorsements, along with yea or nay on 23 state, county, and city propositions. Don’t vote without it.
Also, for those of you with burning questions about the judges on your ballots: An Explainer on Electing Judges in California, including suggestions.
If you want to know who and what will be on the ballot you’re going to cast: View your sample ballot here by plugging in your address.
There are 1.7 million registered voters in San Diego County. If you aren’t one of them, I’ve got good news: You have until October 20 22 to sign up. Here’s the link to register to vote. Not sure if you’re registered? Check here.
Getting out the vote is clearly the priority in this week’s calendar of events, as it should be. Ignore the polls and the trolls. Do your bit to make sure all your neighbors, friends, and family vote in the general election. I should also note that getting involved with campaigns as a volunteer is a great way to expand your circle of friends beyond social media.
Get your event listed in the SDFP Progressive Activist Calendar: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.
Democratic Candidates: I will list all non-fundraising events open to the general public. A listing does not imply endorsement. Events that are listed on Facebook as ‘private’ or sold-out are not listed. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

Gentrification, displacement and skyrocketing rents. We’ve all been talking about it and now its time to DO SOMETHING about it.
Proposition 10 is a historic opportunity to take on the biggest barrier to winning for real housing justice with the repeal of the Republican backed 1995 bill the Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act. Backed by corporate landlords and real estate billionaires, the opposition to Prop 10 is raising BIG money to fight us – but WE ARE IN THE MAJORITY and with all of your help we can win!
Join us for door knocking/phone banking training and mass canvassing during our weekly mobilization days to pass Prop 10 and win the tenant movement for rent control!!! We need as many volunteers to win!

Call to Action if Trump Fires Mueller
March for Truth—an organization that is working with dozens of advocacy groups to organize rapid response protests has partnered with MoveOn.org, Public Citizen, Indivisible and many others to prepare emergency ‘Nobody is Above the Law‘ rallies that will happen directly following the firing of the special counsel should it occur. There are already events in 800+ cities and communities scheduled across the country—more than 300,000 people are prepared to take to the streets.
By firing Mueller or Rosenstein, the president would trigger a full-fledged constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The hours following the firing will determine whether he is proved right.

Through People Power, the ACLU will engage volunteers across the country to take action when Trump or his administration attempt to enact unconstitutional policies or trample on people’s constitutional rights.
