Special Election RepubliMath™ Fails to Sway City Council

June 13, 2017 by Doug Porter

Today’s column is about mathematics. We’ll start with the basics: five is a bigger number than four. 5-4 was the final vote tally at the City Council on Monday against holding a special election in November 2017.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer used addition and subtraction to punish the members of the City Council he felt were obstructing his plan to put convention center expansion and a proposal to redevelop valuable Mission Valley real estate before the voters.

The Mayor added $5 million to the city budget to pay for the special election that the council had removed.  And he subtracted dollars destined for projects favored by the Democrats on the Council.   [Read more…]

Stop TrumpCare in the Senate: What You Need to Do

June 12, 2017 by Doug Porter

If you live in California, DON’T call your US Senator about opposing the TrumpCare bill currently under consideration. We already know both our Senators won’t vote for something that goes scurrying back under the refrigerator when the lights come on.

Instead, ask them to withhold consent on all Senate business until Republicans agree to hold a public hearing on ACHA.

The baker’s dozen of good ol’ boys hammering out a ‘healthcare’ bill in the United States Senate are hoping to push their Frankensteinian creature to a vote this week. They’d like to pass legislation affecting one-sixth of the domestic economy and impacting (at a minimum) 23 million people with as little outside input as possible.   [Read more…]

Protests Aim at Gay ‘Conversion’ Advocates Conference – Progressive Activist Calendar June 9 -20, 2017

June 9, 2017 by Doug Porter

Activist Calendar

Events in the coming week involving the LGBTQ communities are at the forefront of this calendar, with the local version of the Equality March for Unity and Pride, a mobilization to peacefully and clearly address concerns about the current political landscapes and how it is contributing to the persecution and discrimination of LGBTQ+ individuals.

On June 15-17, a national convention of gay conversion proponents known as The Restored Hope Network will be held at City View Church in San Diego. Local activists are planning responses throughout the week at both the conference site and the Mission Valley Hilton, where delegates are staying.

The overall level of political activism continues to be high, and there are events throughout the county to educate, agitate, and organize in the coming weeks.   [Read more…]

Comey Hearing: Republican Senators Hold a Class on Victim Blaming

June 8, 2017 by Doug Porter

Three things stood out for me during the testimony of former FBI Director James Comey.

Whether or not they wanted Trump to win, the true story of Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. elections is bigger than we think. Republicans are fools to downplay it just because it served them well this time around.

Watching spineless Republicans (and their online minions) complain about somebody not standing up to Donald Trump was beyond ironic. How can these guys look at themselves in the mirror?

Women who have ever reported rape and/or sexual harassment must have been experiencing a strong sense of deja vu with the pattern of Republican attempts to blame the victim/witness.   [Read more…]

Senate GOP Looks for an End-Around on TrumpCare

June 7, 2017 by Doug Porter

Apparently the Republicans in the Senate don’t believe Americans can walk and chew gum at the same time. While the President is busy having a spasm on Twitter, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes he’s got a plan to get enough votes for passage of an even more devious version of TrumpCare, otherwise known as the AHCA.

Democratic aides are expecting the Senate Republicans to use surprise tactics, says Greg Sargent at the Washington Post, even a placeholder bill full of platitudes and short on specifics to get something on the table for House and Senate negotiations.

The GOP’s strategy is currently to sabotage Obamacare as a means of creating a sense of urgency around getting a bill through Congress this year, according to Dave Weigel at the Washington Post.   [Read more…]

Real Estate Interests, Hoteliers Triumph in Special Election Showdown

June 6, 2017 by Doug Porter

You could say that special elections are actually a form of voter suppression. And you’d be right.

The absurdities of politics in American’s Finest City never cease to amaze me. Monday’s battle of the budget was a perfect example, complete with surprise ending(s). There were dueling press conferences, grueling hours of public testimony, some public fuming, and a mayoral overruling.

Given the number of players involved–and some won’t get mentioned for the sake of brevity–it’s best to lay out a timeline of events. The day started on the community concourse outside of city hall.   [Read more…]

Behind the Digital Curtain at the San Diego Free Press

June 5, 2017 by Doug Porter

One thousand, three hundred and thirty posts ago I started writing for the San Diego Free Press. Today, I want to give you a peek behind the digital curtain.

Along with this column, there will be articles from contributors throughout the week. I urge you to read them. You’ll discover–I hope–some of the humans whose creative efforts make this unique media platform happen.

The idea for creating a modern day version of San Diego’s legendary underground newspaper came out of meetings organized by some of us local bloggers who posted at the OBRag–a digital re-incarnation of its sometimes-scruffy ancestor.   [Read more…]

Photo Gallery: Marches for Truth in San Diego, Nationwide

June 3, 2017 by Doug Porter

Truth

Hundreds of people turned out in Mission Bay Park on Saturday, June 3 as part of the nationwide March for Truth.

The San Diego version of March For Truth, a national coalition of activist groups, was one of 140 events around the U.S. demanding that leaders in government defend the rule of law and fully investigate the Trump administration’s motives for interfering in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to Donald Trump and his associates. The event was co-sponsored by Invisible groups from around San Diego.   [Read more…]

Resistance Is Persistence! San Diego Progressive Activist Calendar June 2 -14, 2017

June 2, 2017 by Doug Porter

This is the week that was. It’s becoming obvious certain fright-wingers nerves are getting rattled, and locally the institutions enabling them are stepping up.

Questions about the Russia-Trump connection continue to fester. At a conference in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared Hillary Clinton and others who accuse Russia of conducting cyber attacks against the Democratic Party to anti-Semites who say “the Jews are to blame” for various problems.

In the 49th Congressional District, the City of Vista is attempting to impose restrictions on peaceful protests outside Rep. Darrell Issa’s office, and the ACLU is on the case.   [Read more…]

March for Truth Organizes as Putin’s Puppet Starts to Dance

June 1, 2017 by Doug Porter

This weekend people in 140+ cities will take to the streets to say facts matter. The March for Truth represents a collective demand for a thorough investigation and complete disclosure of events surrounding the ascension of Donald Trump to the White House.

This protest takes on an even greater importance in the wake of developments over the past few days.

The White House–responding to demands conveyed through quasi-state media–is prepared, according to the Washington Post, to return properties in the U.S. seized from Russia in retaliation for interference in our electoral process.

President Vladimir Putin has backed off of previous denials of Russian involvement in US politics, saying “patriotically minded” private Russian hackers could have been involved in cyberattacks last year to help the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump.   [Read more…]

Congressman Darrell Issa’s Confefe Problem

May 31, 2017 by Doug Porter

Can He Escape From The Shadow of the Chicken?

Congressman Darrell Issa has not been having a good month. I’m choosing to use President Trump’s late night twitter typo as an adjective to describe just how bad it’s been.

He (and his minions) have been squabbling with the press. The month began with the “None of your business” snarl, continued with an (allegedly) raised middle finger and ended with a bizarre phone call to a politics reporter with the Union-Tribune.   [Read more…]
