Senator Describes Immigrants Held In Cages ‘Like Dog Kennels’ | Video Worth Watching
So what is the administration doing with all of the children being ripped away from their parents as result of its new policy? Apparently even U.S. senators aren’t able to find out. Oregon senator Jeff Merkley attempted to visit three facilities in Texas. His staff was able to arrange visits to two of them and he shares with All In’s Chris Hayes what he observed. The third facility, a decommissioned Walmart with blacked out windows in McAllen, Texas, reported to be housing nearly a thousand children, turned him away. [Read more…]
“Don’t Treat Us Like Animals:” Outrage Builds After Border Agent Kills Indigenous Guatemalan Woman | Video Worth Watching
From the Democracy Now! YouTube website:
In Guatemala, family members are demanding justice for Claudia Gómez González, the 19-year-old indigenous woman whom a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot in the head and killed last week in Texas near the U.S. border. Border Patrol initially claimed that the shooting occurred after an agent “came under attack by multiple subjects using blunt objects.” The original statement described González as “one of the assailants.” But later the agency changed its story, saying the agent opened fire after “the group ignored his verbal commands and instead rushed him.” However, a resident who lives near where the shooting occurred said she never heard the agent yell anything. The Guatemalan Consulate in Del Rio, Texas, is calling for an investigation into González’s death, criticizing the “violence and excessive use of force by the Border Patrol.” At the time of her death, González was headed to Virginia to reunite with her boyfriend. For more, we go to Houston, where we speak with Astrid Dominguez, director of the ACLU’s Border Rights Center. We also speak with Sarah Macaraeg, an award-winning investigative journalist, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Simple Song #3 ● David Lang ● from Paolo Sorrentino’s ‘Youth’ | Video Worth Watching
Last night was movie night. I soaked in a film by Paolo Sorrentino—Youth—that deals with all the big issues: life, death, family, friendship, love … I’m still not sure I’ve entirely absorbed it. The cast includes Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano and Jane Fonda. The cinematography by Luca Bigazzi was exquisite, in fact painterly, in several scenes. There were several surreal passages that still have my mind swirling. The music, by David Lang, was tender, captivating and compelling. Here’s “Simple Song #3” from the closing scene. [Read more…]
Penguin Cafe – the Captivating Product of a Fever Dream | Video Worth Watching
The kind of music that you’ll hear from Penguin Cafe, one might not expect from a group whose roots were the fever dreams of musician Simon Jeffes induced by food poisoning back in the 70s. Even though some of his visions were bleak and isolating, they also included dreams of a place where people could gather for music, cheer and pleasure, the Penguin Cafe. Since Simon’s death in 1997, his son Arthur has carried on his vision and sensibility in the guise of The Penguin Cafe. [Read more…]
To Create a More Welcoming World | Video Worth Watching
As part of Starbuck’s four-hour training session last Tuesday, participants watched a short film by Stanley Nelson designed to heighten the viewer’s awareness of how profiling affects diverse communities. The video features the NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s Sherrilyn Ifill who served as Senior Consultant for the project. During the video a narrator comments that even though discrimination in public spaces has been against the law since the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, changing the law doesn’t always change reality. And being allowed in doesn’t always mean being welcomed. [Read more…]

Updated 11:30am 5/31/18
Full Frontal’s Samantha Bee takes on the current administration’s new policy, as it is being implemented by the Department of Justice under Jeff Sessions, of separating children from their parents when taken into custody by Immigration officials. YubaNet reported that testimony by Richard Hudson, Deputy Chief of the Operations Program for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at a May 23rd Judiciary Committee meeting revealed that during the 13 day period from May 6th through May 19th, 638 parents traveling with 658 minor children were prosecuted under the “zero tolerance” policy. That’s roughly 50 children a day being separated from their parents. [NSFW: language] [Read more…]

Dial Telephones: “How to Use the Dial Phone” 1927 AT&T | Video Worth Watching
Today, May 29th, marks the 91st anniversary of dial telephone service in the Fresno area. To prepare the public for this new technology the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. and the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. The original, now in the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, was silent, but this YouTube version has been provided with (somewhat random) background music. You may want to just mute the sound and listen to something that works for you. (h/t to AGD) [Read more…]

Superorganism: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert | Video Worth Watching
Maybe because I made Old Bay steamed shrimp for dinner tonight, but something resonated when I saw the title “Prawn Song”. And then discovering the whimsical and inventive musical instrumentation had me hooked. In an email to the NPR crew the group requested “7 x Crunchy apples, 7 x cans of Coca Cola (or similar, as long as they are 330mls/12oz cans it doesn’t matter)” and added, “PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A RIDER BUT PART OF THE PERFORMANCE.” And there’s more! Even whistling! Hope you’re as tickled as I was. [Read more…]

Watched a comedy special on Netflix the other night featuring Tig Notaro: “Happy to Be Here”.
