Pelosi Lawyer Who Beat Bush White House Dishes On Trump Subpoena Plan | Video Worth Watching

December 3, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the MSNBC website:

The Trump administration could refuse to comply with Democrats who attempt to investigate issues like Trump’s ties to Russia, or corruption in the White House in 2019. Former Counsel to Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the Bush administration, Irvin Nathan, who was also the first House Counsel to take a White House to court over an administration subpoena, won his case. He joins Ari Melber exclusively to discuss how Democrats can subpoena top White House aides if they refuse to comply with subpoenas. Nathan also reveals Pelosi is already considering candidates for the Counsel role, and hopes the court battle begins “very quickly”.

Nina Simone – I Think It’s Going to Rain Today | Video Worth Watching

December 1, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

The recent weather had my beloved humming this tune. For us this has always been the Judy Collins cover, from her 1966 album “In My Life”, of this Randy Newman inspiration. But while searching for an online version I discovered a slew of other performers have been moved to interpret this work, including Nina Simone, another of our all-time favorite artists. This performance was somehow not yet included in our collection of her work, so I had to check it out. Listening to Nina’s rendition didn’t diminish the Judy Collins version and Nina’s performance stands alone in its own delivery and truth. If you’re unfamiliar with Nina or her version of this melancholy air, here’s your opportunity to enrich your musical repertoire.   [Read more…]

Visiting North Sentinel – An Island Untouched For 55,000 Years | More Video Worth Watching

December 1, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

And here’s something for the weird and wonderful category. There are, indeed, still places on this planet that have little or no contact with the rest of the world. Here’s a brief look at the history of one of those places: North Sentinel Island. It has a reputation for being the “most dangerous” island in the world. After watching this video, you should get a sense of how it has earned that reputation. (h/t to Annie L.)   [Read more…]

Honduras: As Berta Cáceres Murder Trial Nears End, Will True Perpetrators Be Brought to Justice? | Video Worth Watching

November 30, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Democracy Now! website:

Eight men are on trial in Honduras for the murder of environmentalist Berta Cáceres, who was gunned down in her home in La Esperanza in 2016. A verdict is expected this week. The assassination of Cáceres came a year after she won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her work protecting indigenous communities and her campaign against a massive hydroelectric dam project. We speak with Dana Frank, professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her new book is titled, “The Long Honduran Night: Resistance, Terror, and the United States in the Aftermath of the Coup.”

November 29, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

ACLU Deputy Director Lee Gelernt on How Trump is Subverting the Asylum Process | Video Worth Watching

November 28, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

ACLU Deputy Director, Immigrants’ Rights Project, Lee Gelernt speaks with All In’s Chris Hayes about the process of seeking asylum in the U.S., and the current Administration’s attempt to subvert that process in violation of current U.S. and international law. One recent attempt on November 9th was for Trump to issue a proclamation declaring that only those entering the United States at designated ports of entry would be eligible to apply for asylum. It then submitted a rule to the federal register, letting it go into effect immediately and without the customary period for public comment. After a number of civil rights groups took the government to court, Lee Gelernt successfully argued against that case, with Judge Jon S. Tigar of the United States District Court in San Francisco in Monday issuing a temporary restraining order blocking the implementation of that rule.   [Read more…]

No One Wanted Us – The Tragic Voyage of the SS St. Louis | Video Worth Watching

November 27, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the YouTube website:

In May, 1939, the SS St. Louis, a ship of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution left Hamburg, bound for Havana, Cuba. Without their knowledge, their landing passes had been voided by the Cuban President, Laredo Bru. When the ship arrived in Cuba, the passengers were not allowed to debark. Representatives from the Jewish Joint Distribution committee negotiated with the Cuban government, but to no avail. The passengers appealed to President Roosevelt to allow them to land in the United States, but they were again turned away. The ship was forced to return to Europe, where two-thirds of the passengers would perish in the Holocaust.

Current U.S. and international asylum policies and laws owe much to the eventual repudiation of that sort of reaction to the plight of refugees.   [Read more…]

Ana Tijoux – Antipatriarca | Video Worth Watching

November 25, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Ana Tijoux was born in Lille, France in 1977, daughter of Chileans that had fled the 1973 Chilean coup of Pinochet. Her interest in rap, hip-hop and dance began in 1988, but she didn’t return to Chile until after 1973 when civil power was restored. This song is from her 2014 album Vengo and even though it’s in Spanish, I believe the sense of independence and autonomy will come through even for non-Spanish speakers. Equally as impressive is the evident diversity of her world. For me, it echoes the sensibilities of Edward Steichen’s The Family of Man.

Since lyrics can be difficult to discern, especially on a first listening, I’m including the lyrics after the video.   [Read more…]

The True Origins of Black Friday | Video Worth Watching

Black Friday used to be a term to describe pedestrian and car traffic In the 1950s, police in Philadelphia always saw a ton of chaos the day after Thanksgiving Hordes of people would head into the city that Friday ahead of the huge Army-Navy football game held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
