‘Duncan Hunter Jr. Is a Coward’ | Video Worth Watching

October 19, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

The campaign for Duncan Hunter, Jr., the indicted U.S. Congressional Representative from California’s 50th Congressional District, has been running ads portraying his opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, as a security threat to the country. The reality: Ammar has had an FBI security clearance allowing him to serve in the federal government as recently as 2016. The real security threat: Duncan Hunter, Jr.

MSNBC’s All In’s Chris Hayes spoke with Ammar Thursday night about Hunter’s indictment and Paul Ryan’s stripping Hunter of his assignment on the Armed Services committee; Hunter’s refusal to participate in any debates; Hunter’s plan to raise the Social Security retirement age to 72, and his unwillingness to campaign on issues, relying instead on baseless fear-mongering. More info in Doug Porter’s Wednesday Starting Line column. Bye!   [Read more…]

This Is What Voter Suppression Looks Like | Video Worth Watching

October 18, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Black Voters Matter Facebook page:
Voter suppression is real, y’all and it happened to us today in Louisville, Georgia in Jefferson County. We had a whole busload of beautiful black elders ready to go vote when the county commisionner shut us down and made our elders get off the bus without having the chance to vote. This is voter suppression pure and simple. These elders have been through this time and time again so today was fuel to our fire! Instead of bring five family members and friends, they’re gonna bring twenty! Can’t stop, won’t stop. When we work together, we win. Share this video for us to get out the word that we need a record turnout in Georgia from now untiol Election Day! And tell us if and where you voted yet in the comments!!   [Read more…]

Iconic ‘Black Power’ Salute at Olympics Marks 50th Anniversary | Video Worth Watching

October 17, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Yesterday, October 16th was the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic political sports images—the Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. The contemporaneous response to that gesture was derision and disciplinary action. Both Gold Medal winner Tommie Smith and Bronze medalist John Carlos were prohibited from participating in any future Olympics events, both lost their jobs after returning from Mexico, and their families received death threats. Time has confirmed the power of their statement though, with the event being memorialized in film (Salute), in sculptures and at various ceremonies commemorating the event.   [Read more…]

The ‘March for Our Lives’ Parkland Students Collaborate with Artists Sage, Kesha and Chika to Create a Powerful Video on the Issue of Gun Violence | Video Worth Watching

October 16, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

The March for Our Lives group has collaborated with artist Sage to create a video that is a sort of mashup of Groundhog Day and a Rube Goldberg device. From the SAGE YouTube web page:

“Safe” is the debut single from the artist Sage. Sage wrote the song while in his senior year of high school after the tragic mass shooting in a high school in Parkland, Florida. He played the first version of the song for his older sister, the music artist Kesha, who instantly felt the power of the track and wanted to help the cause by lending her voice to the song and movement. Chika, independent female rapper known for her vicious flow and fearless lyrics, contributed verses to finish the song.

German ‘Indivisible’ Movement Draws 240,000 to Berlin Rally | Video Worth Watching

October 15, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

German far-right groups have been growing in numbers, but Germans opposed to racism and hyper-nationlism are in vastly greater numbers and continue to push back with counter-demonstrations. Organizers in Germany that are promoting inclusivity and diversity use the hashtag: #unteilbar (#indivisible in German) in recognition of the enshrinement of this principle in the German constitution. The organizers of this recent event in Berlin were expecting a turnout of around 40,000, but were amazed when participation swelled to around 240,000. Additional coverage at NPR here.   [Read more…]

Tyger – Guilherme Marcondes | Video Worth Watching

October 14, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Following the election results in Brazil has been a bit discouraging with the “Brazilian Trump”—Jair Bolsonaro—getting 46% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election. Perhaps a slight silver-lining to this dark news cloud is that thinking of things Brazilian reminded me of the fantastic 2006 video Tyger by the Brazilian filmmaker Guilherme Marcondes, inspired by William Blake’s poem of the same name. For those curious about how Brazil may be getting its own Trump, check out John Oliver’s take on Last Week Tonight.   [Read more…]

53,000 Voter Registrations On Hold In Georgia, 70% African American | Video Worth Watching

October 12, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Here’s this week’s case of Republican voter suppression. From the MSNBC YouTube page:

AP reports that more than 53,000 residents have had their registrations on hold thanks to a policy that requires their applications to “precisely match” info from other state agencies. Reasons could be mundane as a “dropped hyphen in a last name.” 70% of the people on the list are African Americans.

Valve Turners on Trial: Judge Acquits Three Climate Activists Who Shut Down Tar Sands Pipelines | Video Worth Watching

October 11, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Democracy Now! YouTube page:

A month before the 2016 election, anti-pipeline activists staged an unprecedented coordinated action to shut down the flow of oil from the United States to Canada. On October 11, 2016, activists in North Dakota, Washington, Montana and Minnesota turned the manual safety valves on four pipelines, temporarily halting the flow of nearly 70 percent of the crude oil imported to the United States from Canada. They came to be known as the “Valve Turners.” What followed was a lengthy legal battle that ended with some of the activists in jail. But on Tuesday, three valve turners who broke into an oil pipeline facility in Minnesota on that day in 2016 were acquitted. We speak with the valve turners themselves, Annette Klapstein and Emily Johnston, about their acquittal. Johnston is a poet and co-founder of 350Seattle.org and Klapstein is a retired attorney for the Puyallup tribe and member of the Raging Grannies. We also speak with their attorney Kelsey Skaggs and Dr. James Hansen, the former top climate scientist at NASA.

Can Women’s Anger Save America? | Video Worth Watching

October 9, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Atlantic website:

In America today, women are angry. But this isn’t a modern phenomenon, argues the author Rebecca Traister. In her new book, “Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger,” Traister details how female rage has long been the country’s political fuel. She expounded on this idea at Aspen Ideas Festival in June, where, in a video interview, she discussed how the fury of American women—from the suffragists to the abolitionists to Rosa Parks—has catalyzed major political movements.
