Why is Dianne Feinstein and 15 Other Senators Still Undecided about Filibustering Neil Gorsuch?

March 30, 2017 by Source

Neil Gorsuch

“Any Democrat selling out by rubber-stamping Trump’s takeover of the Supreme Court should expect to hear from their constituents loud and clear”

By Deidre Fulton / Common Dreams

Fifteen Democrats (and one Independent) remain undecided on whether to filibuster Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court, according to one news outlet’s recent count.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on President Donald Trump’s nominee on Monday, April 3; Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said that a vote to confirm Gorsuch will take place on the Senate floor on Friday, April 7. The Senate goes on a two-week recess after that.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called for a filibuster, which would force Republicans to win 60 votes for Gorsuch’s nomination. Thirty Democrats (including Independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont) have said they’ll support the filibuster.   [Read more…]

Treasury Department

[Editor’s Note: Yesterday, Tuesday, March 28th, the House voted 228-190 to block more attempts by Democrats to obtain President Donald Trump’s tax returns from the IRS. Here is more about the bill. ]

By Nadia Prupis / Common Dreams

The House Ways and Means Committee is poised to vote on a resolution of inquiry Tuesday that would direct the Treasury Department to release President Donald Trump’s taxes.

H.Res. 186, introduced earlier this month by Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), directs Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to hand over copies of Trump’s returns from 2006 to 2015, as well as any information the department has on his foreign debts and investments and use of tax-avoidance schemes.   [Read more…]

Seeking ‘To Create a Police State,’ AG Sessions Threatens Sanctuary Cities

March 28, 2017 by Source

Sanctuary

By Andrea Germanos / Common Dreams

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday took aim at sanctuary cities, saying such communities must end and that his Department of Justice would deprive them of federal grants—a move that prompted the New York attorney general to vow his continued resolution in resisting the Trump administration’s “draconian policies.”

“Such policies cannot continue. They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the streets,” he said during a White House press briefing.

“We intend to use all the lawful authorities we have to make sure our state and local officials … are in sync with the federal government,” Sessions said.

Blocking Gorsuch Matters Now More Than Ever

March 27, 2017 by Source

Gorsuch

By Miles Mogulescu / People’s Action Blog

Trump and the Republicans are doing so many things so fast to hurt ordinary Americans, it’s hard for the resistance movement to keep up.

But nothing is more consequential than Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court, which was fast-tracked to the president’s desk by the Koch Brothers-backed Federalist Society.

Gorsuch’s nomination is the latest assault in The Federalist’s successful 30-year campaign to stack the judiciary with right-wing judges and shape the law to favor corporations over workers.   [Read more…]

With Epic GOP Failure, Dems Urged to Go Bold with Medicare-for-All

March 27, 2017 by Source

"Health care is a human right" protest sign

Americans rallied against the GOP to defend their right to healthcare, Democrats are being urged to seize on the moment

By Lauren McCauley / Common Dreams

With the Republican attempt to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) going down in flames Friday as Americans rallied to defend their right to healthcare, Democrats are being urged, both by experts and constituents, to seize on the moment and counter with a plan that will truly provide coverage for all.

Uproar over the GOP’s American Health Care Act (AHCA), which was estimated to strip 24 million people of their healthcare by 2026, prompted a political firestorm as it drove voters across the nation to town halls and local legislative offices to demand that House Republicans vote against the bill.

After the White House called on House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) to withdraw Friday’s scheduled vote (after an aggressive lobby effort on the part of both President Donald Trump and Ryan), many are looking to what happens next.   [Read more…]

Citing FBI Probe of Trump, Democrats Told to ‘Declare National Emergency’

March 23, 2017 by Source

"Red eye" of the HAL 9000 computer from Stanley Kubrick's classic film "2001: A Space Odyssey,"

‘The Democratic leadership in the House and Senate,’ says filmmaker Michael Moore, ‘needs to bring a halt to all business being done in the name of this potential felony suspect, Donald J. Trump.’

By Jon Queally / Common Dreams

Documentary filmmaker and political activist Michael Moore on Wednesday said it’s time for the Democratic Party in Congress to “declare a National Emergency” and put a stop to all legislative activity—including the confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch—until the FBI completes its investigation into possible ties between members of President Donald Trump’s campaign and alleged interference by the Russian government in last year’s U.S. election.   [Read more…]

Midway Planning Group Hosting Beach Community Planners Discussion About Homelessness in April

March 22, 2017 by Source

By Geoff Page / OB Rag

The Midway Planning Group is devoting its entire April monthly meeting to an in depth discussion of one subject – homelessness. Councilmember Lorie Zapf has committed to attend as has Stacie Spector, the mayor’s “homeless czar.” The group had not yet settled on a venue as of its March 15 regular monthly meeting.

The Midway planners are attempting to find a place for the discussion that will accommodate an expected large group of people. The Peninsula, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Mission Beach planning groups are being invited to the discussion. The homeless population in the Midway area and the problems that it causes is a major concern for the mostly business oriented members of the group. Information on the meeting site will be provided in the coming weeks.   [Read more…]

The Insidious Effect on the Pysche of Trump’s Torrent of Lies

March 22, 2017 by Source

Research shows that repeating a lie, even to refute it, imprints it on our brain

By Neil Baron / AlterNet

There’s a problem with the media’s repetitive refutation of Donald Trump’s lies: It makes them more credible. Research finds that repeating a lie, even to refute it, imprints it on our brains, and they become more memorable than the refutations.   [Read more…]

Jig Up for Duncan Hunter This Week?

March 21, 2017 by Source

By Dweisman / Escondido Grapevine

House Ethics Committee scheduled to consider Hunter financial affairs Wednesday

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-50th District) and his use of campaign funds for personal expenses is scheduled to come under review from the House Committee on Ethics at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 22. The committee announced the meeting in a Website posting Friday.

However, before one gets too excited, consider that the committee previously set meetings for March 9 and March 13, only to postpone them each time.

Teamsters Going After Opioid Profiteers

March 21, 2017 by Source

opioids

By Sarah Anderson / OtherWords.org

Travis Bornstein never told his friends about his son Tyler’s drug problem. He was too embarrassed.

Then, on September 28, 2014, Tyler’s body was found in a vacant lot in Akron, Ohio. The 23-year-old had become addicted to opioid pain killers after several sports-related injuries and surgeries. Unable to afford long-term treatment, he ultimately turned to a cheaper drug — the heroin that killed him.

“Now I have no choice but to speak out,” the elder Bornstein, president of Teamsters Local 24 in Akron, told a crowd of thousands at the union’s convention in 2016. As he shared the unvarnished tale of how a middle-class, star athlete wound up in that vacant lot, Bornstein lit a fire under the 1.4-million-member organization.   [Read more…]

Should We Pay the Rich to Build Infrastructure, Then Pay Them to Use It?

March 20, 2017 by Source

By Dave Johnson / People’s Action Blog

It’s starting to look like President Trump’s promised $1-trillion plan to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure will be as bad for us as his health care plan turned out to be.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has issued their 2017 Infrastructure Report Card. We didn’t do so well. Our “grade” is a miserable D+. Why? Go outside and look around at our out-of-date and crumbling roads, bridges, dams, airports, water systems, and electrical grid.   [Read more…]

‘Ides of Trump’ Action Aims to Send More Mail Than White House Can Ignore

March 14, 2017 by Source

By Nadia Prupis / Common Dreams

A new movement is aiming to mail at least 1 million postcards to President Donald Trump on Wednesday, March 15—historically dubbed “the Ides of March” and known as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated—to show “the man, the media, and the politicians how vast our numbers are…to make it irrefutable that the president’s claim of wide support is a farce.”

“He may draw a big crowd with empty promises, but the crowd of those that oppose his agenda is exponentially larger. And we will show up to protest, to vote, and to be heard. Again and again and again,” the group, which calls itself the Ides of Trump, explained on its website and Facebook page.   [Read more…]
