Mad as Hell That I Was Indoctrinated In School and Not Educated

June 7, 2017 by Anne Haule

I’d like to go on a bit of a rant about how naïve I have been for so long and even though I am an educated person, my education was more akin to indoctrination. Now that I am finally waking up, I wish to share a few examples of what I was taught and what I now believe.

Christopher Columbus – I was taught he was a hero for proving the world was not flat and discovering and bringing Christianity to the new world. In fact, he was a really a “bad hombre” and he was not the first explorer to reach the Americas – he was preceded by its indigenous people who came from Asia and later, the Vikings. As for the shape of the earth, scholars had known since antiquity that the Earth was a sphere. Most shocking to me was learning that he started the transatlantic slave trade; used torture and mutilation; and initiated the genocide of the natives.

Time to get rid of Columbus Day for sure!   [Read more…]

Words for the Freeps on Our Fifth Anniversary

June 6, 2017 by Bob Dorn

The New York Times Could Only Take ‘One Outrage a Week From San Diego’

Many of us Freeps were born at the simultaneously best and worst of times. We came into the world during or just after World War II, which itself is probably the best war these so-called United States ever fought.

Our parents had been rescued from the Great Depression by Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal thinkers, a class not afraid to be called intellectuals because they combined brains with a conscience, a combination that produced programs like Social Security and a set of banking laws that are still in operation. A Works Projects Administration built schools and government buildings (see our own County Administration Building) that established a new and more chic standard than the revivalism of Greek and Roman temples and Southern plantation aesthetics. There was a GI Bill that sent vets to universities to resume their educations.   [Read more…]

In Congress This Week June 5, 2017

June 5, 2017 by At Large

By Indivisible 49

House voting on bill (HR 10) to rewrite Dodd-Frank and take away post-2008 financial protections for consumers and small businesses. If you have extra time this week, call your Rep to oppose this bill!

State level: CA’s single-payer health bill passed the CA Senate 23-14 and will now advance to the Assembly. It will likely be amended there to include taxes to pay for the measure, which will then require 2/3 votes in both chambers.

Issa’s activities: (Local section)

It took Darrell Issa until Friday to post a press release about 45’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, awkwardly straddling the fence by both giving support and hinting at disagreement with Trump: “…I would have preferred the President work within the agreement to ensure other nations are doing their fair share. It’s noteworthy the President instructed negotiations to begin immediately on re-entry or on crafting a better deal to ensure more equitable contributions from our partners around the world.” Representative Issa, your district deserves to have a leader who stands up to an ignorant White House.   [Read more…]

Photo Gallery: Marches for Truth in San Diego, Nationwide

June 3, 2017 by Doug Porter

Truth

Hundreds of people turned out in Mission Bay Park on Saturday, June 3 as part of the nationwide March for Truth.

The San Diego version of March For Truth, a national coalition of activist groups, was one of 140 events around the U.S. demanding that leaders in government defend the rule of law and fully investigate the Trump administration’s motives for interfering in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to Donald Trump and his associates. The event was co-sponsored by Invisible groups from around San Diego.   [Read more…]

Trump Against the Planet: Defending the Climate With Local Action

June 3, 2017 by Source

An Indivisible Explainer

Editor’s note: The President’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement has dismayed activists all over the world. We’re reposting this document from Indivisible, whose mission is to fuel a progressive grassroots network to defeat the Trump agenda, to give people some ideas about what steps to take.

The health and safety of Americans and their families is just a game to Donald Trump. On June 1, 2017, he announced—with a televised, grand reveal in the White House Rose Garden—that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. By doing so, Trump hopes to fulfill one of his devastating campaign promises to roll back critical climate and health protections, at the expense of the American public and of generations to come. Trump announced the U.S. will withdraw from Paris despite widespread opposition to pulling out by the American public, the business community, advocates, and even political leaders from both parties.   [Read more…]

Resistance Is Persistence! San Diego Progressive Activist Calendar June 2 -14, 2017

June 2, 2017 by Doug Porter

This is the week that was. It’s becoming obvious certain fright-wingers nerves are getting rattled, and locally the institutions enabling them are stepping up.

Questions about the Russia-Trump connection continue to fester. At a conference in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared Hillary Clinton and others who accuse Russia of conducting cyber attacks against the Democratic Party to anti-Semites who say “the Jews are to blame” for various problems.

In the 49th Congressional District, the City of Vista is attempting to impose restrictions on peaceful protests outside Rep. Darrell Issa’s office, and the ACLU is on the case.   [Read more…]

Miramar Air Show, Just Don’t Go!

June 2, 2017 by At Large

By Dave Patterson

Summer is around the corner in San Diego and many of us look forward to the annual traditions, like the Miramar Air Show.

This wildly popular event attracts an estimated 500,000 attendees, and brings people from all over the world to see the pilots demonstrate their precision flying and perhaps line up purchases of weapons. Corporate chalets are available where weapons vendors can “Use their company logo and message to reach 500,000 Air Show attendees!” This, of course, is all while real military people risk their lives to entertain the crowd.   [Read more…]

March for Truth Organizes as Putin’s Puppet Starts to Dance

June 1, 2017 by Doug Porter

This weekend people in 140+ cities will take to the streets to say facts matter. The March for Truth represents a collective demand for a thorough investigation and complete disclosure of events surrounding the ascension of Donald Trump to the White House.

This protest takes on an even greater importance in the wake of developments over the past few days.

The White House–responding to demands conveyed through quasi-state media–is prepared, according to the Washington Post, to return properties in the U.S. seized from Russia in retaliation for interference in our electoral process.

President Vladimir Putin has backed off of previous denials of Russian involvement in US politics, saying “patriotically minded” private Russian hackers could have been involved in cyberattacks last year to help the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump.   [Read more…]

Downtown Protest Set in Response to Expected Trump Decision to Abandon Climate Agreement

June 1, 2017 by Staff

Climate

Grassroots climate advocacy group SanDiego350 is calling for people to protest President Trump’s widely expected decision to pull the U.S. out of the international Paris Climate Agreement.

A demonstration is set for 5:30-7pm today (Thursday, June 1) at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building (880 Front Street) in downtown San Diego.

Pulling out of the Paris Agreement, according to organizers, will set back global climate leadership and condemn Americans to increasingly devastating climate impacts, poorer health outcomes, and loss of jobs and prosperity – which affect the poor, communities of color, and Indigenous people first and worst.   [Read more…]

Congressman Darrell Issa’s Confefe Problem

May 31, 2017 by Doug Porter

Can He Escape From The Shadow of the Chicken?

Congressman Darrell Issa has not been having a good month. I’m choosing to use President Trump’s late night twitter typo as an adjective to describe just how bad it’s been.

He (and his minions) have been squabbling with the press. The month began with the “None of your business” snarl, continued with an (allegedly) raised middle finger and ended with a bizarre phone call to a politics reporter with the Union-Tribune.   [Read more…]

A Spymaster’s Clandestine Speech and the Importance of June Third’s March for Truth

May 26, 2017 by Doug Porter

Progressive Activist

Progressive Activist Calendar for San Diego May 27 – June 5

There are numerous self-appointed investigators plugging away at unraveling the Trump-Russia connections. Hardly a day goes by without Twitter blowing up for an hour or two about impending indictments, grand juries, and the juicy piece of evidence that will bring down the House of Trump.

I know from being a reporter in Washington DC during the Watergate years about the fatal flaw of many conspiracy theorists: the desire for attention and fame at the heart of their ‘investigations’ inevitably leads to bigger and bolder semi-truths morphing into outright lies.

I follow just about all these people on Twitter, mostly because even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day. They’re right in sensing something rotten in the White House; they’re wrong when they invent anonymous sources to validate their speculation.   [Read more…]
