Why Does Trump Keep Firing Up His Base?
No matter the issue, Donald Trump always speaks reassuringly to his base — that 35percent of the electorate who are loyal supporters and have stood by him no matter what he says or does.
Even his speech at the United Nations was delivered directly to his base, with its trumpeting of the same nationalistic themes from the campaign, complete with derogatory nicknames — a style honed and lifted right out of his campaign — all to keep his supporters on the Trump train.
Cathleen Decker at the Los Angeles Times described it:
For Trump’s supporters, those [United Nations] headlines evoked one of his strengths, the belief that he speaks their language and is willing to disrupt the establishment anywhere, even in a stronghold such as the United Nations. … He has emphasized issues he knows are important to his followers….

#TrumpTaxScam: Plenty of Money for the Wealthy, Pain for Everybody Else

While President Donald Trump on Wednesday asserted from a podium in Indianapolis that his tax plan was “more fair for everyday Americans,” a chorus of voices quickly derided the new, detail-short proposal as “wealth-fare,” a “cruel joke,” a “plan that only the superrich and giant corporations could love,” and like “Christmas morning for tax cheats.”
The president’s plan includes slashing the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent; capping the individual rate—now 39.6 percent—at 35 percent; cutting the so-called “pass-through” rate by a third, and eliminating entirely the estate tax. [Read more…]
Review: Martyna Majok’s ‘Ironbound’ Encapsulates Struggle of a Polish Immigrant Woman
Moxie Theatre is staging its first production the 2017-2018 season, Martyna Majok’s “Ironbound.” Directed by Jennifer Eve Thorn, “Ironbound” is a story about a Polish immigrant woman “for whom love is a luxury and a liability as she fights to survive in America,” as described in the program.
Set at a bus stop at night in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Jacque Wilke portrays the life of Darja from 1992 — shortly after she emigrated to the United States with her first husband Maks (Arusi Santi) — until 2014, when she deals with her unfaithful boyfriend Tommy (Eric Casalini), a letter carrier.
Using 2014 as a jumping-off point, the play’s narrative goes switches between defining moments in Darja’s relationships with her two husbands (only her first husband appears on stage), her son (who never appears on stage) and Tommy, her current boyfriend. Vic (Carter Piggee), a high school kid, who finds Darja at the bus stop after she has been beaten by her second husband, acts as a Good Samaritan. [Read more…]
Why Does the Colorado River Need to Sue For Rights?

On Tuesday, September 26, the Colorado River will sue the State of Colorado in a first-in-the-nation lawsuit requesting that the United States District Court in Denver recognize the river’s rights of nature. These rights include the rights to exist, flourish, regenerate, and naturally evolve. To enforce these rights, the Colorado River will also request that the court grant the river “personhood” and standing to sue in American courts.
Four of my comrades in the international environmental organization Deep Green Resistance and I, are serving as “next friends” to the Colorado River. We are represented by the noted civil rights attorney Jason Flores-Williams who is based in Denver. Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund is serving as advisors in the case.
The term “as next friends” is a legal concept that means we have signed on to the lawsuit as fiduciaries or guardians of the river. Under current law, the Colorado River is not “legally competent” and, so needs “next friends” to ensure her rights are protected. A “next friend” is someone who appears in court in place of another who is not competent to do so – like a minor or someone with a mental disability. My role, as next friend to the Colorado River, is to protect the river’s rights.

When Racism Lurks In the Heart Of a Death Penalty Juror
“…absent an unlikely intervention, the state of Georgia will execute death row inmate Keith Tharpe by lethal injection on September 26, 2017.”
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?” This single, sinister question, asked over a sepulchral-sounding musical score, was rhetorical; for after a dramatic pause and a malevolent cackle, the narrator smugly informed the audience: “The Shadow knows.”
And so it was with this somber admonition on September 26, 1937, that the gritty, crime-fighting character dubbed “The Shadow,” whose exploits had previously been limited to pulp fiction magazines, burst into American consciousness with his own radio program. The uber-successful first episode called “The Death House Rescue” would lead to a run of 664 more installments over 18 seasons.
Exactly 80 years later another story about a scheduled execution, this time one that is all too real, is playing out; but, unlike that first episode of The Shadow, there is little chance of a tidy and fair resolution (much less “a death house rescue”). Indeed, absent an unlikely intervention, the state of Georgia will execute death row inmate Keith Tharpe by lethal injection on September 26, 2017.
Also, unlike the condemned man in The Shadow’s fictional “Death House Rescue,” no one is arguing that Tharpe is innocent. Nevertheless, Tharpe’s attorneys argue he shouldn’t be put to death because, as has been widely reported, after Tharpe’s conviction and death sentence, Tharpe’s lawyers secured a prejudice-laden sworn affidavit from a now-deceased juror by the name of Barney Gattie. Too many people in San Diego think County Supervisor candidate / former District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis is some kind of moderate. Heck, some people think she’s even a Democrat. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Do you need some evidence? Look at who’s running her campaign: Jason Roe, the guy tasked by the Chamber of Commerce and their associates for derailing minimum wage in San Diego. Look at who’s polling on her behalf: The Lincoln Club, smear purveyors extraordinaire.
It’s no small coincidence a smear campaign, complete with website appealing to the Beavis and Butthead demographic, against former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, favorite of the Democratic Party’s establishment for the District 4 County Supes contest, emerged this week. [Read more…]
