A film maker, Rita Grant, called asking me to join an expert education panel at San Diego State University (SDSU). She said she found me when reading Diane Ravitch’s blog and thought I would be a good fit. The event was a screening of the film “Go Public” at EnCorps’ Summer Residential Institute, followed by question and answers with the panel. I was not familiar with EnCorps, “Go Public” or Rita but nothing ventured nothing gained. So, I went.
I met a wonderful group of people, but their organization’s reason for being is misinformed. It’s another education reform organization created by a well-connected misinformed rich person with little relevant training or experience in education, Sherry Lansing. [Read more…]

TrumpCare and the Senate – Where are we?
After the recess, TrumpCare is losing steam. So, how might this go? One way that some Repubs, including Ted Cruz, have advocated for is repeal without replacing the ACA. This would be dumb. This article sums up why. Another way it could go, is not repealing the ACA at all and focusing on fixing it. Mitch McConnell has mentioned this a number of times now–including a few days ago. In a post-Proposition 64 world, after voters could not have sent a clearer message about acceptance of the cannabis industry, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis is busy making enemies of some of the most effective leaders who have emerged.
Bonnie thumbs her nose at voters while nearly dancing toward a seat on the county board supervisors. Particularly shocking in this prosecution is the targeting of cannabis attorney, Jessica McElfresh who has represented several of the newly-licensed collectives under the city’s ordinance. Congressional Black Caucus Says No to Trump Photo Op
With one senior aide telling Politico “No one wants to be a co-star on the reality show,” the Congressional Black Caucus rejected an invitation from the President Donald Trump to meet at the White House.
Members of the 49 member caucus were put off by the invitation signed by “the Honorable Omarosa Manigault,” noting the-reality-TV-star-turned-White-House-aide had in no way earned such a title.
The CBC’s letter in response to the invitation pointed out the failure of the administration on numerous occasions to respond to entreaties from the group and the policy proposals coming from the White House were, in fact, harmful to their interests. [Read more…]

Six months ago the news broke about Sandy Naranjo, a young mother, progressive activist, and passionate labor advocate had filed a lawsuit against one of the most powerful men in San Diego. In the complaint, she outlined several claims of gender discrimination and retaliation she experienced while working for her former boss, Mickey Kasparian, President of United Foodservice and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 135.
It seems appropriate to set down a timeline for clarification and reflection on this unfortunate anniversary, given the many moving pieces, purposefully confusing narratives put forth by some involved, and events that have happened since.

June 5 to 9, 2017 will go down in San Diego’s history as the week Mayor Faulconer revealed the Trump wannabe lurking beneath his compassionate conservative disguise – tweets and all! From Monday to Friday, the San Diego mayor’s office went from sending out a press release declaring:
“Our homeless crisis is staggering and the struggles on our streets are growing as more people fall into homelessness. The time to act is now. Lives of so many men, women and children are on the line.”
to vetoing the teeny line item to fund a half-time consultant to support the newly formed Select Committee on Homelessness.

When historical women gather on stage—like Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls—their creativity, wittiness, and diversity transform into dynamic energy. The Moxie Theatre production of Lauren Gunderson’s The Revolutionists, directed by Jennifer Eve Thorn, exemplifies that transformation.
Set in Paris in 1793 at the beginning of the Reign of Terror (1793-1794), The Revolutionists portrays four women who played different roles in the French Revolution. The central figure is writer Olympe de Gouges, who championed equal rights for women in the French Republic and wrote plays and pamphlets as well as giving speeches including the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen. I don’t know about y’all but, with all the Three Stooges kind of shenanigans going on in the White House, I feel like we’ve entered the Trump Zone. It’s definitely not the Twilight Zone, that’s for sure.
The Trump Zone’s stories go way beyond any episode I’ve ever seen on the Twilight Zone. No character in the Twilight Zone comes close to the main character in the Trump Zone, an orange faced villain with hair a scarecrow would refuse to wear, a man who, wherever you look, he is there.

Nixon’s GOP Blocked Investigations into His Actions, As Well—Until They Couldn’t

As disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn refuses subpoenas and the vice president dodges questions about his claims that he didn’t know anything untoward was happening (even though he was the man responsible for ensuring it wasn’t), and after we have learned that Trump’s team took direct actions to try to shutter the Flynn investigation, and as a special counsel takes over the Justice Department investigation of Russian election hacking and ties to the Trump campaign, and as still more evidence comes out of meetings between the campaign and specific Russian figures under watch by this country’s intelligence services, many, many Americans are contemplating the parallels between this administration and President Richard Nixon’s downfall.
Of particular import is the question of whether any decent Republicans still exist who would not simply grouse against a president’s crimes, but act upon them. The plain evidence suggests not: there have been no revelations that have resulted in the Republican contingent asking pertinent questions during committee hearings, rather than lecturing on the impropriety of the public finding out about those acts, and party leaders have been obsequious in their condescension to their leader. California Has an Opportunity to Stop Predatory Lending with AB 784

People should not be punished financially for the color of their skin or for the neighborhood they live in. And yet, that is exactly what has been happening in our state when it comes to high-cost lenders who disproportionately peddle payday loans in black, brown, and poor communities. While we know that payday loans and the “debt traps” they create are bad, there’s been recent, and troubling growth in even larger and more problematic loans known as installment loans.
It’s hard to believe, but under existing state law, there are no restrictions on the interest rates that lenders can charge for installment loans of over $2,500. Not surprisingly, high-cost lenders are pushing people to take the loans for more than $2,500. According to state data, in 2015, more than half the loans to Californians for $2,500 to $4,999 came with interest rates of over 100%. [Read more…]

History cannot be changed. It cannot be moved like a statue. What is done is done. The Civil War is over, and the Confederacy lost and we are better for it. Surely we are far enough removed from this dark time to acknowledge that the cause of the Confederacy was wrong.
And in the second decade of the 21st century, asking African Americans — or anyone else — to drive by property that they own; occupied by reverential statues of men who fought to destroy the country and deny that person’s humanity seems perverse and absurd.
