This is a very different version than the ones that I’m most familiar with: the spare unaccompanied vocal delivery of Ralph Stanley as featured in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? or the Gullah version of Bessie Jones re-imagined by TangleEye. Workers Suffer While the UFCW Plays Politics | Progressive Activist Calendar May 4 – 14, 2018
The Union-Tribune and Times of San Diego have both posted stories about a U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit filed on Thursday. A San Carlos Albertsons is alleged to have created a hostile work environment and harassed Hispanic employees by forbidding them from speaking Spanish on the premises, even to each other on break or to Spanish-speaking customers.
From the Times of San Diego:
Beginning in late 2012, the Albertsons store on Lake Murray Boulevard near Navajo Road prohibited employees from speaking Spanish around non-Spanish speakers, including when they spoke to Spanish-speaking customers and during breaks, the suit said. [Read more…]

Feeding Kids in San Diego – 1 In 6 Children In San Diego County Are At Risk Of Hunger | Video Worth Watching
The Times of San Diego reports that the local non-profit Feeding San Diego (a member of the national Feeding America organization) released a study revealing thet nearly 380,000 people in San Diego county (11.7% of the total population) are food insecure. That includes 127,280 children under the age of eighteen, or roughly one out of six children in San Diego County. The study uses data from a number of sources, including the Department of Agriculture and the Census Bureau. [Read more…]
San Diego DA Candidate Summer Stephan’s Bad Day
Wednesday, May 2, wasn’t a good day in appointed interim District Attorney Summer Stephan’s quest to win her first election in the June Primary.
In Justice Today, a leading publication in the field of criminal justice reform called out Stephan’s claims about human trafficking, suggesting she’s used inflated numbers to bolster her political and professional profile.
And Genevieve Jones-Wright, Stephan’s opponent in the upcoming June primary, has asked the State Attorney General’s office to investigate ten alleged violations of state law prohibiting employees–in this case, local law enforcement–from participating in political activities of any kind while in uniform. World Press Freedom Day: US Press Freedom Ranking Drops To 45th
May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day as declared by the United Nations. This year’s theme is “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”.

Although this annual commemoration serves to highlight the struggle for press freedoms around the globe, the real work of securing these rights goes on daily in dozens of nations where reporters are threatened, jailed and killed.
The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that 262 reporters were imprisoned in 2017. 62 have been killed in 2018 and 58 are missing globally.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the press is facing major challenges from an adversarial presidential administration. [Read more…]
