The Condor and the Eagle: Part 1
“An ancient prophecy says when the Eagle of North America and the Condor of South America unite and fly together, the spirit of peace will awaken on Earth. After waiting for millennia, many native peoples believe the time is now.”
In December of 2012 local San Diego muralist Mario Torero and I took a trip to Peru where we met up with a group of art students from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. For many years, Mario has been going to Toledo, Ohio and painting murals with students from Bowling Green under the direction of their instructor, Gordon Ricketts. It was Mario and Gordon who coordinated this cultural exchange trip in order to bring a part of North American culture to South America while at the same time allowing the students to experience and participate in South American art and culture in a personal and interactive way. Since Mario was born in Peru and travels there frequently, it was quite natural for him to lead this journey of cultural exploration.
This clip is actually part of a longer documentary that we are making about the trip, but I decided to do things a little differently this time and edit from the end to the beginning. As the editing progresses we will release the sections we have completed until we get all the way to the beginning. Then we will piece it all together and release the whole documentary. We still have a lot of great footage from Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca to go through. Along the way we met some extraordinary artists and activists dedicated to making Peru a better community for all to live in and visit. It is my hope that this documentary will expose people to the art and culture of Peru as well as serve to open up an avenue of further collaboration between the North and South American artistic communities.
