By Stan Levin

We are taught that Success is always the preferred outcome.
I dare propose otherwise ….
Contrarily,
It is my considered belief
that a reduction in world suffering
could be directly attributed to a failure of intent.
Someone goes on living due to a malfunctioning weapon meant to
take his life.
Oftentimes the successes we applaud are,
by their very achievement,
spawns of misery and murder on a large scale,
and the antithesis of morality and virtuosity.

Contemporary case in point;
The string of failures of Un’s missile tests
temporarily delaying the annihilation of unpredictable numbers
of innocents. Who would encourage Un to succeed?
(Well, OK, arms manufacturers)

Where Failure might have been infinitely more desirable,
I cite that;
The Gatling gun was a success …
as was mustard gas.
And zyklon b, massively, deadly Success in
Auschwitz and Buchenwald and …… (need I continue?)
Pearl Harbor was a Success ….
as was 911.
Hiroshima was a Success …
as was Nagasaki, same week.
Agent Orange,
and the inimitable NRA,
and Drones are notable Successes ….
and the KKK may not yet be classified a Failure.

My drift escape you?
Irritated / angered by this radical a point of view,
Sunshine Patriot?
Your preference – violent “solutions” to contentious dilemmas,
Would be Hero?
Pursuit of Peace turn you off,
Organized demonstrations for Peace turn your stomach,
Couch Warrior ?

“Rugged” Constitutionalists successfully hold sway
over Common Sense
A string of Successes for Nationalists,
and Imperialists
proceed ,
to the immeasurable detriment of Humankind.
Global Jingoism successfully prevails,
benefiting almost no one,
including the most vigorous of flag wavers

Too bad, and most depressing
to we advocates of World Peace and Harmony.
Observations of abundance of Successes ….
Really …. too bad.

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
