Suburban cul-de-sac

Life Beneath Power Lines
A seemingly peaceful cul-de-sac anywhere in SoCal hides electro-magnetic danger for all.

By michael-leonard creditor / flexible fotography

In honor of Earth Day and the fair coming this weekend, here are illustrations of just some reasons that Earth Day needs to be every day. Humans consume earth’s resources and, in turn, poison her even as our plastic poisons us. Industrial uses crowd residential districts. Climate change fuels year-round “fire season.” Beneath it all is the trash and litter we all leave behind us. Stay conscious, San Diego.

  • Felled tree trunks lying on the ground
Logging Old Growth, Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon
Right by the campground, too. Seeing these giants felled is like seeing something dead.
  • View of tops of barrels closely packed together
    Punctured Oil Drums, Portland, Oregon
This terrible display was beneath an open storage shed in a park! I never knew what was inside them.
  • View of junkyard
    Industrial Junkyard, Buffalo, NY
In the shadow of a long-shuttered grain elevator sits an ongoing eyesore. It isn’t even a landfill. The trailer in lower right is an added giggle.
  • The two San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant domes
    Industrial Breasts #1
Though now closed, SONGS will still be there looming over our coast for a long long time.
  • Couple sitting on grassy area, large smoke cloud fills sky overhead
    Smoke Over the Mountain
The cloud from the Harmony Grove fire fills the sky over Mount Soledad.
  • Tricycle on narrow rocky beach
    On the Beach, Nerja, Spain
One of the most surreal scenes I’ve ever encountered; so many questions....
  • Closeup view of eroded hillside showing detail
    Peñasquitos Erosion
Eroded hillsides like this can be seen all over San Diego County. They are little disasters waiting to happen.
  • Shopping cart lying on its side in streambed
    Low Tide, San Diego River
Each year volunteers pull tons of trash from our local waterways. Who throws items like this into the river anyway?
  • View down length of Tijuana river viaduct, showing dark and algae laced water
    Tia Juana River Pollution
And why are there always so many tires?
  • Stack of phone books for recycling in Balboa Park Organ Pavilion
    Earth Day Fair

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
