Dig deep enough into any of the issues of the day and you’ll find they all have one thing in common: economics. Yes, indeed, money makes the world go around. And the fact is most of us are getting a smaller piece of the economic pie as the years go by.
Our fearless leader’s tax reform package is worthless and 73% of the American people have already figured that out. Take the illusion of empowerment out of all the ‘reforms’ (of either political party) and what’s left is more wealth for the people who already have it
The contemporary conversations starting back in the days of Occupy about the 99% have evolved. Nowadays we speak of economic justice. Generally speaking, these discussions center on the reallocation of government resources to alleviate the most blatant examples of those falling through the so-called safety net.
I’m not gonna try and make all the arguments here today. But I do say we need to dig deeper; get to the root of our issues. This is the definition of ‘radical,’ by the way. If we’re fighting for a bigger piece of the pie–or even the whole damn pie–we still haven’t gone far enough. This can’t be just about material things anymore; it must have a moral component.
We have reached a point where the very idea of value is determined solely by currency. The very soul of our humanity counts for nothing.
It comes down to moral questions: Do we really want to live in that kind of world? A world where worth is determined by profit? Is the love of a mother for a child quantifiable? Should we put a price tag on kindness?
What’s the solution? In my wildest fantasies, I visualize some sort of drastic punishment for the high priests of greed. And then I realize that ‘off with their heads’ merely makes room for the next set of oppressors.
Change has got to come from the bottom up, and the process of change ultimately leads to its form. So I’m not here to say we have to march for socialism. Building change from the bottom up involves a lot of time and effort. And a lot of mistakes and failures.
If we start looking at changing the world in terms of ‘who’s profiting economically from this and why?’as a starting point for understanding what must be done, surely we’ll do better.
Registering voters and mobilizing them to get to the polls, even in a Blue State like California, has to be a big priority in 2018. In May there will be “Get Out the Vote” rallies as mail-in ballots arrive. Dozens of campaigns are already knocking on doors, trying to engage voters.
Today’s GOP is a result of 60 years of concerted effort to create a coalition of racists, misogynists, book burners, and billionaires. Donald Trump is a symptom, not the disease afflicting the representative Democracy known as the United States.
Unraveling this mess isn’t going to happen quickly. It may not feel like it today, but real change is made up of millions of small steps. If you haven’t already, get out there and take your first step today. Our activist calendar offers up dozens of opportunities every week

While many large city law enforcement agencies have banned the use of the Chokehold by their officers, both in training and in the field, the San Diego Police Department continues to allow this deadly practice. After hearing testimony by a medical expert, by the SDPD, and hearing public comment at two Community Review Board (CRB) meetings, the CRB’s Policy Committee had voted on 2/27 to advise the CRB to vote on 3/27 to support use of the chokehold in only rare instances, but even this vote was delayed until the May 22nd public meeting of the CRB.
Come speak out during public comment and help the CRB see that the SDPD must stop the use of the deadly chokehold protocol. Please join us – your input is important. [Jessica is the attorney being prosecuted for defending a Medical Marijuana supplier.] The hearing last week regarding the prosecution’s attempt to quash my subpoenas went very, very well. The judge was not interested in jockeying over discovery and preferred to cut to the chase. To that end, he wants any outstanding discovery produced before the prelim, ideally by the next hearing on 4/26.
He wants a few items I’ve been requesting for awhile — like, an affidavit for one of the search warrants in the case and a sealed filing the prosecution filed with a judge to get him to breach attorney-client privilege back before I was charged — produced to him so he can review them for investigatory privilege and determine what, if anything, to hold back as privileged. He also wants the same for the documents I had subpoenaed from the City of San Diego if privilege is claimed on some documents.

How do we have a “conversation about capitalism” when your blogger starts with stereotypes and then follows up with fallacies? Then you look at the comment section and it’s an antiquated forum? Hmmm
“…stereotypes” and “fallacies” unnamed, and Alex, the “antiquated
forum” apparently attracted your attention. Hmmmm…
Greed of our Masters, Bob? Get rid of them, Bob? Occupy? The 99%? Don’t want to live in a World where our worth is determined by profit? None of this whining sounds like capitalism or an eagerness to converse about it.
