Less than twenty four hours after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives, President Trump went off the deep end.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was fired. the only thing surprising about that move was the swiftness with which it occurred. Sessions’ chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, is in as acting Attorney General, and has already removed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein from overseeing the investigation into Russian activities in the United States.
The new acting AG previously authored an op-ed for CNN accusing Mueller of going “too far,” and called for Rosenstein to “limit the scope” of Mueller’s investigation. He also chaired the 2014 campaign of Sam Clovis, a grand jury witness in that case. Additionally, Whitaker authored an opinion piece for USA Today two years ago saying Hillary Clinton should have been criminally charged.
The Nobody Is Above the Law network is calling for rapid-response protests at 5 PM local time in cities nationwide on Thu, Nov 8 in response to these moves.
Statement from the Nobody is Above the Law Network:
Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the Special Counsel Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller’s boss on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the investigation. Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it. The Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation. Our hundreds of response events are being launched to demonstrate the public demand for action to correct this injustice.
San Diego demonstrations are already set for
- Downtown San Diego: Federal Courthouse, 333 West Broadway
- Escondido: Westfield North County Mall
- Ramona: Collier Park
- Carlsbad: Carlsbad Premium Outlets
