Hating on Hillary & Loathing In Cleveland

July 19, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

Also: 7% Plagiarism is Okay

I was impressed by the first day of the 2016 GOP Convention. It had everything you could want from a collection of shysters and more.

America is a dangerous place, we learned, and so is the world. It’s all Hillary Clinton’s fault. The Democratic nominee for president belongs, if you listened to the speakers and read the tee shirts being hawked outside, in jail.

The last gasp of dissent within the Republican party was crushed as Trump supporters chanted “USA! USA!” as the microphones to suspect delegations were turned off.   [Read more…]

2016 Political Conventions: The End of the World As We Know It (Or Not)

July 18, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

The news over the next four days will obsessively focus on the quadrennial Republican convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

News Flash: Donald Trump will be the nominee. Fear of the ‘other’ will be the main message, abetted by a compliant media overly concerned about equivalence. The basic premises upon which GOP Truths are built upon will be largely unchallenged.

News Flash #2: There is a Democratic convention next week. Hillary Clinton will be the nominee. Lots of Very Serious folks will make promises about inclusiveness and progress. The underlying reasons for the necessity of those promises will be ignored, abetted by a compliant media overly concerned about equivalence.   [Read more…]

Suspect in Homeless Attacks Arrested, Another May Be At Large

July 15, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

There were two more attacks on homeless people in San Diego. An early morning attack on a 55-year-old man in Golden Hill fit a pattern of evidence suggesting it was linked to four other recent assaults on homeless people, three of which have proved to be fatal.

Several hours later police arrested a person resembling the description of the killer on Laurel Street. On Thursday, police distributed an updated sketch of the purported serial killer.

Earlier in the morning at Second and Cedar Streets, police reported another incident matching the style of other attacks, wherein homeless people have been struck in the head by a person or persons riding a bicycle. There have been more than a dozen such attacks around downtown and the East Village in recent weeks. Today’s arrest does not appear to be connected to these incidents.

City Attorney’s Justice for Sale Scheme Targets Family of Mentally Ill Man Slain by Police

July 14, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

PLUS: Trump, Trump, Trump, and More Trump

The office of City Attorney Jan Goldsmith has proved beyond a doubt that San Diego has the best legal system money can buy… provided the victims have the money to pay.

Fridoon Nehad was shot and killed in April 2015 by veteran San Diego Police Officer Neal Browder. The officer said–after being shown a video of the incident– he believed Nehad was carrying a knife, but it turned out to be a shiny blue pen. The dead man was a 42-year-old refugee from Afghanistan diagnosed as mentally ill following incarceration in a Taliban prison camp.

In the wake of an investigation clearing the officer of any misconduct, the family is suing, saying the city has a pattern of inadequate investigations into police shootings. A federal judge has ordered the city to turn over records of other shootings by officers as part of the case. The City Attorney’s office is demanding that the family pay $12,000 up front to search for and assemble the documents.

Attacks on San Diego’s Homeless Continue

July 13, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

Volunteers Offer Relief – ‘Troll Bashers’ Promote Fear and Loathing

There has been yet another early morning attack on a homeless human in San Diego.

Local TV news outlets are reporting on an attack occurring at 10th Ave. and G Street around 6 a.m. The man was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries, caused by what was said to be a hammer blow to the head is not yet known. The assailant was described as a white male and was seen riding off on a blue mountain bike.

This latest act of violence comes just two days after the San Diego Police Department released 36-year-old Anthony Padgett, who’d been accused of a series of early morning attacks that left three people dead, because of new evidence challenging the case put together by detectives.   [Read more…]

Unity Day for Democrats – Will It Fly? (And How Far?)

July 12, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

The primary elections wrapped up a month ago. The Democratic Party convention in Philadelphia is a couple of weeks in the future. But for all practical purposes, today is the day when the contest for the party’s nomination will draw to a close.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ joint rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire marks the start of the next phase of the political process for Democrats.

After campaigning with Sen. Elizabeth Warren and President Obama in recent days, this unity rally with Bernie Sanders completes Clinton’s version of the political holy trinity of the left.

This unity hasn’t come easily. Representatives of the Sanders and Clinton campaigns have been communicating daily. Above all, nobody supporting the insurgent democratic socialist wanted there to be any appearance of surrender.   [Read more…]

Protests Reveal American Angst About Racism

July 11, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

Protests triggered by videos of fatal encounters of young Black men with police continued across the nation through the weekend. Memorials for the Dallas Police officers slain while protecting marchers were also scheduled nationwide.

The more grown up among us acknowledge that it was possible to reject violence against people for the color of their skin and the color of their uniforms. At the same time, it remains more important than ever to exercise first amendment rights in furtherance of ending the brutality of America’s legacy of racism.

Street demonstrations protesting police violence were held in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Memphis, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, Mineapolis, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and, yes, San Diego. In fact, you can search Google News for just about any large city with “BLM [city name] protest” and chances are you’ll find a story.   [Read more…]

Baseball, Pride, and Protests in America’s Finest Tourist Plantation

July 9, 2016 by Doug Porter

Weekly Progressive Calendar: Upcoming in San Diego

It’s a busy time of year in San Diego. There’s All-Star Baseball, there’s homeless being bullied because of baseball, there’s a protest over the plans build a football stadium in the East Village there’s Pride Week and plenty more.

Get your event listed:  I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. In cases where there are competing but similar events or campaigns of the progressive persuasion, I do my best to list everything.

A Horrible Day for Police (and Everyone) In Dallas

July 8, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

“We are not going to let a coward who would ambush police officers change our democracy”

Five Dallas law enforcement officers were killed, and seven officers along with two civilians were wounded Thursday evening by a lone gunman, now identified as Micah X Johnson.

The assailant opened fire on police in downtown at the conclusion of an otherwise peaceful protest organized in response to videos released in recent days depicting Black men being killed by law enforcement.

Ironies abound amid the tragedy in Dallas, starting with the police department’s shift towards community-oriented policing, resulting in excessive force complaints against the Dallas Police Department dropping by 64% between 2009 and 2014.   [Read more…]

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and That’s Not Funny

July 7, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

A killer targeting homeless humans is likely using San Diego’s transit system to get to his “work…”

…Another human gunned down in Minneapolis for –apparently– being a scary Black person, the day after cops in Louisiana are caught trying to cover their asses following what many are calling an extra-legal execution…

…And a local Congressman is ready to shut down the government to prove his loyalty to an orange-colored racist dog posing as a presidential candidate Donald Trump.   [Read more…]

[Updated] Another Homeless Human Nearly Murdered

July 6, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

As Wednesday morning’s gray skies crept over the city, the San Diego Police were called to State and E Streets, where a man was fatally critically injured and set on fire. Police told NBC7 that a suspect was running from the area of the attack, near the Federal Courthouse.

Two additional assaults on persons believed to be homeless were reported Wednesday morning. These attacks come on the heels of a 24-hour spree over the holiday weekend where two people were killed and another left with serious injuries.

Just an hour after the first incident Wednesday morning, two more attacks were reported. A man sitting at the Fifth and University bus stop–where many homeless people go after being released from emergency room care– was struck by an unknown object in the back of the head. A few blocks away a man sleeping on Third Ave., not far away from Mercy Hospital was struck in the head with a rock, according to police.   [Read more…]

Person of Interest Sought in Savage Homeless Killings

July 5, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

While San Diegans celebrated the Fourth of July, local authorities called a press conference in response to two brutal murders and failed third attempt, all with victims believed to be homeless humans.

The SDPD is looking for a ‘person of interest,’ we are told. Grainy pictures from a convenience store camera show a man wearing what was described as a tan or brown jacket or sweatshirt and a green baseball cap. He was carrying a backpack.

Witnesses reported a person matching that description seen running from the area of the first known murder across northbound lanes of I-5 to the center divide. Others said he was carrying a gas can.   [Read more…]
