MSNBC hosts Chris Hayes of All In and Rachel Maddow of The Rachel Maddow Show reflect on how frustrating it is to not be able to have a rational discussion about regulating the machinery that permits the kind of carnage that occured in Las Vegas, where nearly 600 people were killed or injured in a mass shooting on October 1st. For other kinds of machinery, be it airplanes or automobiles, we have been able to address the issues that cause fatalities and have devised regulations and operational policies to minimize or prevent them. For the machinery of weapons, not so much. [Read more…]
Wall Street Got a Bailout, Why Not Puerto Rico? | Video Worth Watching
Aaron Maté of the Real News discusses with labor leader Hector Figueroa the impact of Puerto Rico’s economic debt on the recovery efforts in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. Figueroa presents the case that Puerto Rico needs to be given the same consideration as was given AIG, Lehman Bros. and the big Wall Street banks that were bailed out. “We need a Marshall Plan for Puerto Rico the same way we did have a Marshall Plan for the European countries after World War II.” [Read more…]
The Viral Song Calling Out Bollywood’s Sexism | Video Worth Watching
Sexism isn’t limited to the U.S. For a glimpse at how some in the Bollywood industry are attempting to push back and call attention to the issues there, here’s an “All India Bakchod” number that highlights (or lowlights, maybe) stereotypical industry examples, all done in the quintessential Bollywood style.

Violent Buddhists? Sad, But True. And the Rohingya are the Victims | Video Worth Watching
With nearly all of the media oxygen being sucked up by the POTUS lately, it’s important that we not forget that there is a world out there beyond the United States. And part of that world is experiencing an event that the the United Nations characterizes as what seems to be “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”. It seems almost oxymoronic—violent Buddhists—but that indeed is the situation in the Western Rakhine state of the predominantly Buddhist country of Myanmar. The ethnic Muslim Rohingya are being targeted by the Myanmar military. The roots of this conflict go back to World War Two where each group supported opposing sides—the Rohingya supported the colonial British while the Buddhists supported the invading Japanese. Puerto Rico Doesn’t Need to Send a Memo, It Needs Direct Action | Video Worth Watching
San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz was apparently asked by a FEMA official at some point to send a memo to ask for assistance. She tells CBS reporter David Begnaud that she doesn’t see things that way. And ICYMI, check out yesterday’s Starting Line for more information on Puerto Rico’s developing humanitarian crisis. [Read more…]
Corporate Consolidation: Are Small Businesses Really the Backbone of Our Economy? | Video Worth Watching
We’ve all heard that refrain “Small business is the backbone of our economy” but is it true? John Oliver examines recent trends, noting for example that the airline industry has gone from ten major carriers in 2006 to only four today. The auto rental car industry has shrunk to only three major companies that account for 90% of the business, and 70% of the American beer industry is represented by only two companies. Often this lack of diversity is hidden by clever marketing and branding that obfuscates the true ownership of product lines. Could this lack of diversity have negative consequences? You bet! And John covers some of his favorites (culminating in some pyrotechnics with a cable box!).
This is could be a dicey issue for John since the show’s parent company Time-Warner is attempting to merge with AT&T. Kudos to John for having the courage take on this issue in spite of the potential for retaliation. And he pulls it off while poking fun at some of his colleagues in the industry. [Read more…]
What you need to know about the GOP’s Graham-Cassidy health care bill | Video Worth Watching
For those still unclear on the latest Obamacare “repeal & replace” effort—the Graham-Cassidy bill, here is a brief outline of the key points as of last Wednesday. Note that the Graham-Cassidy bill is a moving target, though. Over the weekend, Senator Cassidy revealed that a new version will be proposed on Monday. Speculation is that it will be an attempt to buy off Senators Murkowski of Alaska and Collins of Maine, possibly by crafting exceptions which would essentially permit them to retain Obamacare. That also means, of course, that there won’t be time for a full CBO analysis and score before senators are expected to vote on the legislation.
This isn’t over till it’s over—on September 30th when the clock runs out on the ability to pass a bill with a simple majority. If you haven’t called your senator yet, do it now. 202-224-3121. Even Democratic senators need to hear from their constituents. They must be urged to slow down all activity in the Senate to run out the clock. For those of us in California, check out Indivisible’s TrumpCareTen website for California. When the Washington phone lines are busy, call a local office. Staffers at local offices communicate with Washington. [Read more…]

An Homage to Puerto Rico’s ‘La Perla’ After Hurricane Maria | Video Worth Watching
Before there was “Despacito” there was a heartfelt homage to “La Perla” by Puerto Rican musician and poet ‘Residente Calle 13’. The lyrics are in Puerto Rican Spanish but you don’t need to understand the words to appreciate the lay of the land, the atmosphere of the landscape and the vibrant sense of community. In this performance, Residente is accompanied by Panamanian musician Rubén Blades and his samba band Chilinga. Residente’s lyrics can be a bit crude, but they’re pure poetry. One of my favorite images is from the refrain “La noche me sirve de sabana” – The night is my blanket.
And from El Nuevo Día, one of Puerto Rico’s daily newspapers, there’s this coverage of La Perla in the aftermath of Maria. The dialog is in Spanish, but the video can be appreciated by any viewer. It’s painfully obvious that much work will be needed to restore the physical structures, but also obvious that La Perla’s spirit is indomitable. [Read more…]
Rounds 2 and 3 of Jimmy Kimmel’s Health Care Battle | Video Worth Watching
Jimmy Kimmel has been getting flak for his recent take down of Senator Bill Cassidy’s claim that Cassidy’s bill passes the “Jimmy Kimmel test” and Wednesday night he responded with Round 2. When Cassidy had earlier been asked by CNN’s Chris Cuomo to respond to Kimmel’s segment, Cassidy replied “I’m sorry he does not understand”. Kimmel wonders, “Could it be Senator Cassidy, that the problem is that I do understand and you got caught with your GOPness out. Is that possible?” But of course Round 2 didn’t satisfy his critics and Friday night was Round 3, pushing back again to tweets from the POTUS and to segments on Fox and Friends. Responding to criticism that he’s not an expert, he notes “I’m not pretending to be an expert. I’m asking why people like you aren’t listening to actual experts.” And referring to proponents of the Graham-Cassidy legislation, says that “If these guys … would tell the truth for a change, I wouldn’t have to [be the one to do it]”.
