During an interview, Iowa Republican congressman Steve King speaking on the adoption of DACA stated “I don’t think we thought through this very well.” I believe he’s egregiously dismissive of the consideration that was indeed given to the issues regarding the implementation of DACA. Ironically I believe his statement more accurately reflects the situation regarding the repeal of DACA. The military has nearly 900 individuals serving in the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) Pilot Program. If they are indeed “vital” then what happens if they can no longer serve? And in this short piece The Atlantic raises the question about the status of DACA recipients working in the health care field. [Read more…]
Hurricane [from Hamilton: An American Musical] | Video Worth Watching
Even with natural disasters, there may be events which redeem the tragedies. They certainly don’t diminish the magnitude of the catastrophes, but they can provide a counterweight to make more bearable the grief and loss of those misfortunes. From “Hamilton: An American Musical”, here is Lin Manuel Miranda delivering Hamilton’s recollection of his survival of a hurricane in his childhood. Here’s to the hope that our struggles with the current crop of hurricanes may yield some shining moments. [Read more…]
Confounds the Science | Video Worth Watching
One of my favorite earworms, Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” has inspired a parody version—“Confounds the Science”. It’s from the geniuses (genii?) who call themselves The Parody Project. The team even takes pains to present the appearance of Simon & Garfunkel! It’s clever, and sadly, oh so true. )-: [Read more…]
Where Did Our Immigration Laws Come From? Is 1890 White Enough for You? | Video Worth Watching
Our immigration laws have a history, and it’s not pretty. A recent segment of the Rachel Maddow show provided a glimpse of how the foundation of immigration policy was an effort to make the country white again, based on the 1890 census. Knowing more about the origin and intent of immigration legislation, the current controversies make more sense. It’s kind of spooky comparing statements made in the 1920’s with some of the positions taken today. [Read more…]
How Long Will It Take the GOP to Draft a Tax Bill? ‘Two Weeks’ | Video Worth Watching
When I hear talk in the news of when we might expect to see a GOP tax bill, the time frame appears to be “two weeks”. Chris Hayes on his MSNBC program “All In” even had a segment that featured multiple news clips showing how often that unit of measurement is used by our current president. I suspect our contemporary grifter is channeling the 1986 comedy classic “The Money Pit”. Tom Hanks or Shelley Long fans will remember the scenes where estimates by the Shirk brothers crew of how long any particular event would take were always “two weeks”. [Read more…]
California Senator Kamala Harris Interviewed on DACA, the Dreamer Act and ‘Medicare for All’ | Video Worth Watching
One of our California senators, Kamala Harris, appeared on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Laurence O’Donnell to discuss her efforts to craft a legislative solution to the problem created for Dreamers by the termination of the DACA program. The discussion also included some developments with the Senate Intelligence Committee’s relation to Special Prosecutor Mueller’s investigation, and her being the first co-sponsor of Senator Sanders “Medicare for All” bill. Dolores: Rebel. Activist. Feminist. Mother. | Video Worth Watching
Q: What do Angela Davis, Luis Valdez and Gloria Steinem have in common? A: They all appear in the movie “Dolores”, about labor organizer and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta. While surfing the interwebs today I came across a Democracy Now! segment that featured Amy Goodman interviewing Dolores about the current DACA situation. In the course of the interview Amy mentioned that there’s a new film out about her and that piqued my curiosity. With a little more research I discovered that “Dolores” is a Carlos Santana production written, directed and produced by Peter Bratt and it’s just been released!
The film’s website shows that Dolores Huerta will be appearing in person at the Ken Cinema on Friday, September 22th for a Q&A at 4:45 pm and for the screening at 7:10 pm. Other members of the Huerta family, including Maria Elena Chavez and Rick Chavez, will be attending in person on Saturday, September 23rd for the 7:10 screening. [Read more…]
Studs Terkel: ‘Labor Day’s coming up!’ | Video Worth Watching
Maybe it’s because he authored a book titled “Working”, maybe it’s because he was employed by the Works Progress Administration in his early years, maybe it’s just because he so obviously loved the work he did, but for me Studs Terkel personifies the idea of a labor of love, and of the good, caring and kind aspects of work. So, on Labor Day, here’s a brief clip of Studs relating with his disarmingly charming delivery, an anecdote with a Labor Day theme. [Read more…]
A ‘Dreamer’s’ Emotional Journey to Mexico and Back | Video Worth Watching
On Tuesday we’re expecting an announcement about the future of DACA. Local groups are planning to show support for the program’s participants, known as Dreamers, on that day downtown at the San Diego County Water Park at 6:00 PM. Alliance San Diego posted on its Facebook page a video that provides some real life context about one participant in this program. Her situation is a bit unusual in that before traveling outside the country to visit Mexico to meet with deported veterans and others struggling with deportation issues she was able to obtain approval to return to the United States. Here is A “Dreamer’s” Emotional Journey to Mexico and Back. [Read more…]
Union Town by Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman | Another Video Worth Watching
A little more music for the weekend, this selection in the spirit of the Labor Day holiday: Union Town by Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman. Don’t think there are any clips of San Diego in this video, so for us this may be aspirational rather than descriptive, but we’re working on it … [Read more…]
DACA: ‘We Didn’t Come This Far to Give Up’ | Video Worth Watching
Who are the DACA Dreamers? While there are statistics that profile the make up of the nearly 665,000 program participants it should be obvious that there is no one description that can do justice to the diversity of that group. Here, though, is a personal introduction to one of those individuals—Juan Escalante—and his call to action. [Read more…]
