Veterans Challenge Trump’s Islamophobia

President Donald Trump revealed his inner nature again last week when he retweeted a series of anti-Muslim propaganda videos from the deputy leader of an ultranationalist, neo-fascist hate group in the UK.
Trump sank to a new low in terms of the blatant falsehoods and myths he will invoke and propagate to incite enmity against Muslims. He’s demonstrated repeatedly that white nationalism and the demonization of Islam is something that he wholeheartedly embraces and intends to advance at every opportunity.
The encouraging news is that Trump’s fear and hate mongering against Islam and Muslims is increasingly being denounced by a wider spectrum of individuals and groups, including many staunch conservatives, both in the U.S. and abroad. The groundswell of resistance is steadily growing. [Read more…]
Feeding the Deportation Pipeline: Caveat Recruitees

A previous Draft NOtices article, Removing a Few Bad Hombres, discussed the deportation of immigrant military veterans. Non-citizen immigrant recruits in the United States now find themselves possibly facing a similarly cruel and irreversible fate.
In this case, their potential deportation isn’t due to any criminal actions on their part. Instead, its roots lie in the Department of Defense’s (DoD) proposal to terminate the Military Accession Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program over security concerns. The program’s end would result in the cancellation of enlistment contracts with non-citizen recruits.
As reported in media venues such as NPR, this action would leave 1,000 non-citizen recruits without legal protection from deportation. Their plight is yet another reminder of the highly problematic and untrustworthy nature of the institutional commitment to those who aspire to serve in the military. [Read more…]

Immigrants and Allies Rally Nationwide for a Clean Dream Act
Thousands of people in Washington DC and ten states rallied today to demand Congress pass a clean version of the Dream Act, a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program ended by the Trump administration. Students walked out of classes on at least four San Diego campuses in support of this action.
While there has been lip service by Congressional Republicans on passing some version of this legislation, the GOP leadership is insisting on adding measures to escalate border security and deportations. Senate Republicans are saying they have no plans to consider any bills this year.
“Operation Clean DREAM Act Now” is demanding Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, and congressional leaders allow a vote on a clean Dream Act—meaning a bill free of any poison pills ramping up Donald Trump’s mass deportation force—as soon as possible. [Read more…]
Press Issa to Support a Clean Dream Act Now | Video Worth Watching
With the imminent expiration of DACA in March 2018, the ACLU of Northern California, the ACLU of Southern California and the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties have initiated a campaign, “CA is my home”, to pressure key California representatives to actively support the House bipartisan Dream Act and pass the bill by December 2017. The key representative for the San Diego area is Darrell Issa. In the last election Issa lost to his opponent, Doug Applegate, by about 7 percentage points in San Diego County. It was the Orange County voters that tipped the total in his favor, allowing him to retain his seat. Issa should be feeling vulnerable. [Read more…]
Deported Veterans Battle to Come Home

In 1983, U.S. Marine Armando Scott was stationed in Beirut, Lebanon, when suicide bombers detonated two truck bombs that destroyed the barracks housing his unit. More than 300 people died in the attack, including 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers.
Scott survived the terrorist attack and helped pull the bodies out of the rubble.
Unfortunately, Scott, who was born in Panama, is now living in Tijuana. He is one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of U.S. military veterans who have been deported from the country they once served with honor and distinction.

My Day Inside an Immigrant Detention Center
The women are brown and black. They wear navy blue scrubs. Most have navy-colored canvass shoes on, but some wear bright orange plastic shower sandals. They’re in their 20s and 30s, except for a few with long grey hair. They are neat and clean. A few wear white plastic rosaries around their necks.
The facility is a two-hour drive east of San Diego on Interstate 8. It’s in the Calexico desert. There are no trees or green for as far as the eye can see — just lots of grey rock and brown earth. Metal fencing topped with barbed wire surrounds the building. The parking lot is mostly empty. The sun burns the sidewalk and the few cacti that dare to dot the landscape.
Inside it’s clean and tidy. There is no smell. There is no noise. [Read more…]
Ginning Up Fear Over California Fires and Hepatitis A
Right now, right here in San Diego, we have prototypes being built for a wall of shame.
The facts about our border with Mexico don’t matter; that border cities generally have low crime rates, unlawful border crossings are down, people and/or drugs are being mostly smuggled through regular ports of entry.
The Trump administration is dead-set on spending tens of billions of dollars for a symbolic barrier as a testament to their success in selling fear of the ‘other’ as a vehicle for dismantling the social safety net and lining the pockets of their loony financiers.
The President took time out yesterday from disrespecting grieving widows and boosting conspiracy theories floated by Putin’s propagandists to Tweet out a video of the construction in Otay Mesa.

Pregnant Woman Released from Detention; Questions Remain About ICE Policy

After more than 40 days in an immigration detention facility, Maria Solis, an Oceanside pregnant mother, was released to her family on September 12.
Solis, who has had a history of difficult pregnancies, was in such fear for the health of her unborn baby that after weeks of detention she requested to be deported to her native Mexico – rather than risk another day incarcerated.
Calls for her release garnered widespread community support, including help from MomsRising, a nonprofit advocacy organization concerned with issues affecting mothers and families. [Read more…]
President’s Third Attempt at a Muslim Ban Condemned

President Donald Trump buried on a Sunday afternoon announcement of his new travel restrictions on visitors primarily from Muslim-majority countries just as the key portion of his prior travel ban was due to expire. This is the third time the administration has attempted the ban. In this iteration, there is no end date; its restrictions have no time limit, making it more insidious than prior versions.
The new ban places various entry bans on immigrant visas for people from eight countries: Chad, Libya, Yemen, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Somalia, and very limited Venezuelans. Sudan is no longer included in the ban. It goes into effect immediately for people from the six Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen), and in mid-October for those from Chad (also majority-Muslim), North Korea, and Venezuela.
