Trump Gets “Cotton” Mouth on Immigration!

February 7, 2018 by Peter Zschiesche

For years, those of us advocating for comprehensive immigration reform have heard the loudest objections be “no amnesty” or no reward for “illegals.” In objectors’ minds, this includes even those legalized by DACA — those who were brought here as children by their parents without documents. Those objectors say simply these immigrants “broke the law” and the only acceptable remedy is for them to return to their native countries — all 11 million of them.

When confronted by the total impracticality and immorality of this task, they have no answer.  Trump’s repeated calls to “Build the Wall” and “Make Mexico Pay” are attractive to these folks because, for them, it’s not a question of practicality or even the billions of dollars’ in expense, but rather something else entirely.

In fact, there is something quite irrational about advocating for the blanket deportation of 11 million people, but it goes beyond that. There’s a viciousness to it.  Candidate Trump has made it clear what kind of irrationality it is – racism at its core – when he coupled his demand for the wall with the demonizing of the Mexican people as a nation.  He didn’t invent this stuff, but he made it a key rallying cry to his supporters who cheered and jeered in enthusiastic support all the way to his election and now during the current debate on a deal for immigrant youth under DACA.   [Read more…]

Friday DACA Rally at SDSU to Feature Congressman Luis Gutiérrez

February 6, 2018 by Doug Porter

GOP Seeks to Decouple Debate from Spending Bill

Immigration Leader Rep. Luis Gutiérrez’s presence at San Diego State University for a “Defend the Dream” rally on Friday is coming at a time when the future for participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program looks bleaker by the day.

Congressman Gutiérrez, the co-chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Immigration and Border Issues Task Force, along with Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Democratic candidate in CA50, will be urging Congress to immediately remove the threat of deportation for nearly 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

Rep. Gutiérrez is the Capitol’s most outspoken advocate for a DACA “fix”, which has been delayed and deferred throughout a series of short-term spending resolutions by Congress. Nearly 30% of DACA recipients reside in California and, according to Alliance San Diego, 40,000 residents of San Diego County are DACA-eligible or DACA recipients.   [Read more…]

DREAMER: I Was Invited to the State of the Union. This is What It Was Like.

February 5, 2018 by At Large

By Karen Bahena / Alliance San Diego

Democratic leaders from the House and Senate welcomed the largest group of Dreamers to attend a State of the Union address. I stood in disbelief when I received an invitation and I want to thank my congressman, Scott Peters, (D-CA), for making the cordial invitation and standing with Dreamers like myself. It was a remarkable statement of resistance and it sent other members of Congress the message of urgency for a narrow, bipartisan bill that would protect Dreamers all across the country.

Moments before President Donald Trump took the stage, I was escorted by my congressman to my seat. I scanned the House of Chambers from the upper balcony and immediately attempted to make eye contact with attendees who wore “migrating butterfly stickers” in a show of support for immigrants, refugees, and Dreamers. We acknowledged each other’s presence and stood there in solidarity shaking our heads and raising our eyebrows through what turned out to be a distasteful, hate-filled speech.   [Read more…]

Trump’s State of the Union Was a Middle Finger to Immigrants | Video Worth Watching

February 2, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Now This correspondent Versha Sharma provides some context for the immigration policies and issues covered in this year’s State of the Union address, including the domestic origins of MS-13. She also points out the irony that the immigration policies being pushed by Trump would have made it impossible for his family to have immigrated.   [Read more…]

Jimmy Kimmel Gets Real – MAGA vs. DACA | Video Worth Watching

January 31, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

MAGA vs. DACA. In a segment on his show following the State of the Union speech, Jimmy Kimmel takes on the DACA issue by trying to make it real. He assembles a small group of DACA opponents and introduces them to a family that is currently struggling with the current unresolved situation. At one point during the discussion, one of the opponents makes the claim that “we live in a most-loving, compassionate, exceptional country”. Jimmy pushes back, stating his disagreement, and his observation that “I think that this country has become cruel.”   [Read more…]

UCSD Student and DACA Recipient in ICE Custody After Taking a Wrong Turn at the Border

January 11, 2018 by Source

By Gabe Ortiz / Daily Kos

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients don’t have until March 2018 for Congress to act on the DREAM Act. As it is, many don’t even have until tomorrow:

UCSD student and DACA recipient Orr Yakobi was detained Sunday by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) after making a wrong turn near the U.S. Mexico Border coming back from San Ysidro.

First reported by 10News, Yakobi and his friend Ryan Hakim were visiting the Las Americas outlet mall in San Ysidro on Sunday near the border. On the way back, they accidentally took the 805 South freeway instead of the 805 North, which forced them into Mexico. When they turned around, Border Patrol officers flagged their car and detained Yakobi.   [Read more…]

BREAKING: Trump’s Coming to San Diego to Visit His Beloved Border Wall

January 8, 2018 by Doug Porter

Multiple news outlets are reporting on plans for the President to visit San Diego for a look at border wall prototypes sometime after his January 30th State of the Union address. A visit planned for this week was canceled after an opportunity arose to attend the Georgia – Alabama college championship game in Atlanta.

In recent days the administration has taken a noticeably harder line on the border, using a request for $18 billion in funding for the wall as a precondition to any agreement on Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the Obama-era program ended by Trump offering protections to undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as youth.

Speaking from Camp David last weekend, Trump told reporters, “We want the wall. The wall’s going to happen or we’re not going to have DACA.”   [Read more…]

For Many Young Immigrants, This Holiday Season Will Be Filled With Anxiety

December 21, 2017 by At Large

Young woman being interviewed

By Roberto Alcantar

A few years ago, 21-year-old Xiomara Herrera was afraid to leave her home for fear of deportation. Today she’s contributing to society as a student working towards a degree in sociology.

Xiomara is one of 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who came forward in good faith to enroll in Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a federal program that promised law-abiding, immigrant youth brought to the U.S. illegally, the freedom to live, study and work here.

She and 97 percent of DACA recipients are employed or enrolled in school. They lived up to their end of the bargain.  Xiomara is in school, has a job to support her and her four siblings’ rent.

Since age 6 when she arrived from Guerrero, Mexico, Orange County and San Diego have been her only homes. Now childhood nightmares of being deported have re-emerged – since September 5, to be exact, the day Trump said he would renege on this deal and end DACA. Now suddenly and cruelly, young immigrants such as Xiomara can no longer rely on the peace of mind that DACA provided.   [Read more…]

Readers Write: Rep. Issa Needs to Stand Up for DACA

December 20, 2017 by At Large

By Perla Davis

President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Children Arrivals (DACA) program endangers the lives of countless Californian immigrants like myself, and now the Dream Act is being held hostage in return for more dollars that will be spent on ripping immigrant families apart by expanding Trump’s deportation force in the borderlands and beyond. If we have ever needed our Congressperson to demonstrate strong leadership, it is now.

So far, Rep. Darrell Issa has, at best, a mixed record when it comes to the safety of the thousands of immigrant families in his community.

Even though he voted “No” on the Dream Act in 2010, he is now pushing for a DACA fix. But when 34 of his fellow Republican House GOP members signed a letter asking Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to hold a vote to protect Dreamers before the year-end, Rep. Issa decided not to sign it.   [Read more…]

ACLU Demands Naturalization Hearing for Deported Veteran Hector Barajas

December 13, 2017 by At Large

The ACLU and the law firm of Latham & Watkins have petitioned the federal court to conduct a long-overdue naturalization hearing for deported U.S. Army veteran Hector Barajas, who received an honorable discharge after serving nearly six years in the military.

Barajas, a decorated veteran, and founder of the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana, Mexico, was granted a full pardon last year by Gov. Jerry Brown for a conviction that led to his deportation. But U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has not issued a decision on his naturalization application, even though Barajas successfully completed the required portions of the process in November 2016. According to regulation, that decision was supposed to be issued within 120 days, a deadline that has long passed.

In taking this court action, the ACLU Foundations of Southern California and San Diego & Imperial Counties, and Latham & Watkins ask that the U.S. District Court take over the matter and conduct a naturalization hearing for Barajas.     [Read more…]
