Senator Describes Immigrants Held In Cages ‘Like Dog Kennels’ | Video Worth Watching

June 5, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

So what is the administration doing with all of the children being ripped away from their parents as result of its new policy? Apparently even U.S. senators aren’t able to find out. Oregon senator Jeff Merkley attempted to visit three facilities in Texas. His staff was able to arrange visits to two of them and he shares with All In’s Chris Hayes what he observed. The third facility, a decommissioned Walmart with blacked out windows in McAllen, Texas, reported to be housing nearly a thousand children, turned him away.   [Read more…]

Dear Betsy DeVos, I Will *Never* Report My Students to Immigration and Customs Enforcement

June 4, 2018 by Source

By Steven Singer / Common Dreams

Teachers fill a lot of roles in our public schools.

We’re mentors to kids in need. We’re aides to students struggling with new concepts and skills. We’re homework-givers, pencil-providers, idea-encouragers, lunch-buyers, scrape-bandagers, hand-holders, hug-givers, good listeners, counselors, caregivers and – yes – sometimes even butt-kickers.

It’s no wonder that we occasionally get mistaken for mothers and fathers.

But one thing we will never be is a snitch.   [Read more…]

“Don’t Treat Us Like Animals:” Outrage Builds After Border Agent Kills Indigenous Guatemalan Woman | Video Worth Watching

June 4, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Democracy Now! YouTube website:

In Guatemala, family members are demanding justice for Claudia Gómez González, the 19-year-old indigenous woman whom a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot in the head and killed last week in Texas near the U.S. border. Border Patrol initially claimed that the shooting occurred after an agent “came under attack by multiple subjects using blunt objects.” The original statement described González as “one of the assailants.” But later the agency changed its story, saying the agent opened fire after “the group ignored his verbal commands and instead rushed him.” However, a resident who lives near where the shooting occurred said she never heard the agent yell anything. The Guatemalan Consulate in Del Rio, Texas, is calling for an investigation into González’s death, criticizing the “violence and excessive use of force by the Border Patrol.” At the time of her death, González was headed to Virginia to reunite with her boyfriend. For more, we go to Houston, where we speak with Astrid Dominguez, director of the ACLU’s Border Rights Center. We also speak with Sarah Macaraeg, an award-winning investigative journalist, in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Wall

June 2, 2018 by At Large

By Anita Endrezze

The Wall

Build a wall of saguaros,
butterflies, and bones
of those who perished
in the desert. A wall of worn shoes,
dry water bottles, poinsettias.
Construct it of gilded or crazy house
mirrors so some can see their true faces.
Build a wall of revolving doors
or revolutionary abuelas.
Make it as high as the sun, strong as tequila.
Boulders of sugar skulls. Adobe or ghosts.
A Lego wall or bubble wrap. A wall of hands
holding hands, hair braided from one woman
to another, one country to another.
A wall made of Berlin. A wall made for tunneling.
A beautiful wall of taco trucks.   [Read more…]

Missing Migrant Children – Full Frontal | Video Worth Watching

May 31, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Updated 11:30am 5/31/18

Full Frontal’s Samantha Bee takes on the current administration’s new policy, as it is being implemented by the Department of Justice under Jeff Sessions, of separating children from their parents when taken into custody by Immigration officials. YubaNet reported that testimony by Richard Hudson, Deputy Chief of the Operations Program for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at a May 23rd Judiciary Committee meeting revealed that during the 13 day period from May 6th through May 19th, 638 parents traveling with 658 minor children were prosecuted under the “zero tolerance” policy. That’s roughly 50 children a day being separated from their parents. [NSFW: language]   [Read more…]

ACLU Documents Show Widespread Abuse of Child Immigrants in U.S. Custody

May 25, 2018 by At Large

New Report Is Based on Thousands of Government Documents Obtained Through the Freedom of Information Act That Detail Horrific Stories

By ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties

Documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union featured in a new report released today show the pervasive abuse and neglect of unaccompanied immigrant children detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The report was produced in conjunction with the International Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School.

“These documents provide a glimpse into a federal immigration enforcement system marked by brutality and lawlessness,” said Mitra Ebadolahi, ACLU Border Litigation Project staff attorney. “All human beings deserve to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their immigration status — and children, in particular, deserve special protection. The misconduct demonstrated in these records is breathtaking, as is the government’s complete failure to hold officials who abuse their power accountable. The abuse that takes place by government officials is reprehensible and un-American.”   [Read more…]

County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed Join Trump’s Immigrant Hatefest

May 17, 2018 by Doug Porter

“These Aren’t People. These Are Animals”

It must have been a proud day for County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and Escondido Mayor Sam Abed, as they attended the White House California Sanctuary Cities Roundtable.

Freed of the necessity for fact-based discourse, they joined the President in dividing the country on the basis of race and nationality. The timing of the event was fortuitous, coming just one day after top House Republicans huddled at the White House, hoping to head off an attempt by party moderates to force consideration of four immigration bills.

To be clear, the leadership of the Republican Party and the President of the United States would rather denigrate human beings than give our elected representatives the opportunity to even consider immigration reforms supported by the vast majority of the American people.   [Read more…]

The Trump Administration’s Stupefying Hypocrisy About the Well-Being of Children

May 9, 2018 by Source

By Abby Zimet / Common Dreams

In another day of unfathomable cognitive dissonance, a blindingly heedless Melania unveiled her (stolen-from-Obama) initiative to keep kids safe from cyber-bullying and drugs so they can “do all they can to be best in everything” even as, in a galaxy really not very far from there, the soulless cretins of her philandering husband’s administration were doing everything in their depraved power to make life hell for said children.

Melania’s “Be Best” campaign – proving she can multi-task by both plagiarizing and committing heinous crimes against grammar – is based on “the pillars of well-being, social media and opioid abuse” (wait, what?), featuring a website and leaflet that turns out to be a page-by-page replica of an Obama-era Federal Trade Commission website and leaflet “Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online,” with very minor tweaks.   [Read more…]

Sessions Vows to Prosecute All Illegal Border Crossers and Separate Children From Their Parents | Video Worth Watching

May 8, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

This Monday, May 7th, Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited Scottsdale, Arizona and here in San Diego, to deliver the message that the Justice Department will begin prosecuting every person who illegally crosses into the United States along the Southwest border.

In other words, the Justice Department’s vision will no longer see families desperately fleeing violence and persecution, they will only see criminals attempting to break border crossing laws. For families traveling together, they will see adults smuggling children; adults who must be jailed, separating them from their smuggling “victims”, even if they are their children.

The Washington Post reported that

In San Diego, Sessions was interrupted by a heckler with a megaphone.

“We don’t want you in our state,” the man yelled. “Are you going to be separating families? Is that why you’re here? Why are you doing this? Do you have a heart? Do you have a soul? Why do you work for this administration?”

Those questions went unanswered.

Trump’s Lies About the Border Migrant Caravan Won’t Stop Asylum Seekers

May 1, 2018 by Doug Porter

The border crossing between San Ysidro and Tijuana is the latest flashpoint in the Trump administration’s efforts to demonize migrants and refugees.

Not everybody buying this bluster, thankfully. People on both sides of the border have been working to meet the needs of the migrants, and volunteers are delivering blankets, water, food and other necessities on a regular basis. Baby wipes, diapers, blankets, and tents are still needed.

The President, who apparently learned about a convoy working its way through Mexico from an item broadcast on Fox and Friends, has consistently mischaracterized the group as an organized attempt to enter the country illegally.     [Read more…]
