The call to protest went out mid-day, not long after the Trump administration rolled out their Muslim Ban 2.0. On Twitter, on Facebook, and on the Indivisible network, encompassing dozens of groups throughout the county.
Those that could do so came to make a statement. Those that couldn’t, amplified the message via social media.
It still reads like a ban It still feels like a ban. And it’s still an affront to human decency. Travel restrictions aside, the United States of American is slamming the door on refugees. After the 120-day suspension ends, a mere 12,500 humans fleeing war, oppression, and famine will be allowed to enter the country for the remainder of the year. [Read more…]

The migraines came out of nowhere. Nanci Palacios, who lives in Tampa, Florida, had headaches before but never with the intensity she’s currently experiencing. The back of her head throbs with pain. Her neck and shoulders become stiff. The migraines happen all the time now, Palacios said. She’s sluggish and less efficient.
Palacios also can’t sleep. She’s often anxious and her mind tends to race. At least four times a week, she’s up through the night. Often, she’s twisting and turning in bed. Palacios wears a Fitbit at night to track her sleeping patterns.
“There were periods where I was awake and I don’t remember being awake,” Palacios said. “I would wake up, and I was really tired.” [Read more…]
Trump’s Cowardly Immigration Policy Imperils The Public And The Police
Standing stiffly in overly-starched police blues it was obvious, even before he admitted so himself, that Officer Sean Dinse wished he wasn’t addressing the congregation of the Community Church in Woodland Hills, California.
But, in the tremulous wake of President Donald Trump’s xenophobic and terrifyingly aggressive immigration policies, Officer Dinse said it was important as a matter of both public and police safety for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to “put the word out” that local police do not – and they will not – enforce federal immigration laws. Dinse said that beginning in January the department began reaching out to religious and other community-based organizations to schedule speaking engagements where they could communicate this message directly to the people.
Stressing the difference between LAPD and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Dinse said: “We are all human. We have to respect the law. But we also have to respect people who are just trying to survive.” [Read more…]

When I talk about the danger climate change represents, some of my acquaintances say I’m reverting to adolescence (I protested the ‘dresses only’ policy at my high school, back in my younger days). Others say I’m just reverting to type.
I’ve spent most of my adult life involved with the military in one capacity or another. I’ve observed that as a general truth, the people who have to fight wars are not that eager to start them. I’ve also discovered that, in general, people become aggressive when they are either in fear of something or they are desperate for necessary resources. [Read more…]
The Age Of Fear And Hiding In North County San Diego
With increased actions by US Customs and Border Patrol in North San Diego County, residents return to a life of fear and hiding.

On February 20th, the Department of Homeland Security released two new memorandums for its agents. The memorandums increase the arbitrary authority of the agents in the field and reduce the rights of those who are arrested to almost zero. The ghost of immigration policies past is slowly creeping into our national dialogue once again. Though the Obama administration racked up a high tally of undocumented immigrants it deported, those who were deported were criminals or those who had deportation orders issued.
Over the last week, the Trump administration has begun a crackdown on undocumented immigrants of all sorts and those who had been able to come out of the shadows of fear and anxiety are quickly heading back to those all too familiar places. We have only begun to see what steps the current administration is willing to take to carry out campaign promises of “building a wall” and getting rid of some “bad hombres.” [Read more…]
Trump’s Border Brownshirts Already Running Amok
The ‘gloves are off’ is a terrible thing to say to anybody with a gun and a badge
We’re already seeing glimpses of what ‘empowered’ agencies charged with immigration enforcement will look like in the Trump era, and it’s not a pretty sight.
What seems to be clear at this point is that some enforcement personnel in Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Border Patrol (two separate agencies, both in Homeland security) aren’t even waiting for the official go-ahead.
San Diego has been lucky–thus far– when it comes to the negative impact of recent executive orders on immigration and refugees. I suspect the reticence of the local ‘migra’ forces may have something to do with the potential for civil unrest as much as anything else. [Read more…]
Trump’s ‘Military Operation’ Against ‘Bad Dudes’
In a meeting with corporate executives this morning, President Donald Trump took time out to extol the virtues of his administration’s immigration policies, saying his effort to ramp up deportations is a “military operation” aimed at ridding the U.S. of “really bad dudes.”
The reality of what’s happening is divorced from the administration’s portrayals. Mexican authorities say they’ve seen no increase in deportations. What has increased are public relations efforts to justify the new policies.
Locally, the suicide of Guadalupe Olivas Valencia, less than an hour after he was deported has impacted the immigrant community. The 45-year-old Mexican citizen jumped to his death from a pedestrian bridge spanning the border in San Ysidro. [Read more…]
San Diego Lawyers and Legal Workers Rally in Solidarity with General Strike Against Trump
As part of a set of actions at courthouses across the country, San Diego lawyers and legal workers rallied in downtown San Diego today – February 17 – in front of the Federal Courthouse on Front Street, all in solidarity with the proclaimed General Strike Against Trump on F17.
Several dozen brave folks made their voices heard and presence known in front of the red-bricked buildings, as the wind kicked up and the skies promised rain. Additionally, there were courthouse rallies in at least 17 other cities nation-wide. [Read more…]
Reflections on A Day Without Immigrants
A week of immigration roundups by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has triggered a wave of one-day strikes impacting business and schools in cities throughout the United States.
Eyewitness reports from around the country belie the administration’s assurances that enforcement efforts are aimed at criminal offenders. Deportation forces are harassing legal residents and targeting DACA-recipients, domestic violence survivors, and those seeking shelter from cold weather at a church.
Thus far, San Diego seems to have been spared, according to local advocates. People are afraid, nonetheless. [Read more…]
Constituents Buy Newspaper Ad Seeking Rep. Issa Town Hall Appearance
Several hundred people crowdfunded a full page ad in the Union-Tribune on Tuesday, inviting Congressman Darrell Issa to a town hall in Vista on February 21.
For weeks now people in the 49th Congressional district have been calling, writing, and even picketing hoping to get Issa to directly engage with them on issues of concern, especially what in store for them with the promised repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
The wily congressman tried to dodge the issue by staging a “telephone conference” involving carefully screened callers. He rolled out a proposal for ‘accessible’ health care, hoping people wouldn’t notice they’d have no way to afford it. It didn’t work. [Read more…]
