2017 Meant Pain and Demons for Many Women

December 27, 2017 by Eva Posner

“Write hard and clear about what hurts.” –Ernest Hemingway

2017 hurt.

It hurt a lot of people in a lot of ways. For most of us, the pain started in 2016. Many people sang the praises of 2017 as the new year, hoping for a reprieve. I was not one of them. All I could think this time last year was, “You guys know it’s just going to get worse, right?”

And it did.

2017 made things worse for families. For children. For seniors. For immigrants. For women. For national parks. For scientists. For government employees. For poor people. For communities of color. For students. For LGBT folks. For patients. For journalists. For religious minorities. For animals. For small business owners. For refugees. For workers. For victims of natural disasters. For members of the military. For small farmers. For criminal justice reformers. For homeless people. I’m sure the list goes on and on.

2017 hurt a lot. But I cannot explain everyone’s pain. Only mine.   [Read more…]

December 24, 2017 by Source

Red '63 Chevrolet Impala convertible

Merry Xmas to all and to all the Good Fight!

by Victor Payan

Not so long ago
And not very far
Lived a jolly young man
With a lowrider car

His name it was Felix
Navidad was his name
And he was known round the world
So great was his fame

He was just a man
Just like you or like me
He couldn’t fly through the air
Or walk on the sea   [Read more…]

What’s Bigger Than A Tsunami? Republicans Are About to Find Out. So Are Democrats.

December 21, 2017 by Doug Porter

Congressman Ted Lieu passed that sentiment along –referring to the GOP– yesterday, via Twitter as #WednesdayWisdom, and he’s right as far as next year’s elections are concerned.

I’d take it one step further and say all politicians are about to find out, as the consequences of misogyny, racism, and market-first economics ripple through society.

Let’s take these in order as we prepare to pass into Year Two in the Era of Lord Trump. And, at the end of this article, there’s some breaking (and) good news, so do read all the way through.     [Read more…]

For Many Young Immigrants, This Holiday Season Will Be Filled With Anxiety

December 21, 2017 by At Large

Young woman being interviewed

By Roberto Alcantar

A few years ago, 21-year-old Xiomara Herrera was afraid to leave her home for fear of deportation. Today she’s contributing to society as a student working towards a degree in sociology.

Xiomara is one of 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who came forward in good faith to enroll in Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a federal program that promised law-abiding, immigrant youth brought to the U.S. illegally, the freedom to live, study and work here.

She and 97 percent of DACA recipients are employed or enrolled in school. They lived up to their end of the bargain.  Xiomara is in school, has a job to support her and her four siblings’ rent.

Since age 6 when she arrived from Guerrero, Mexico, Orange County and San Diego have been her only homes. Now childhood nightmares of being deported have re-emerged – since September 5, to be exact, the day Trump said he would renege on this deal and end DACA. Now suddenly and cruelly, young immigrants such as Xiomara can no longer rely on the peace of mind that DACA provided.   [Read more…]

Tax Reform By Another Name: Grand Theft, Republican

December 20, 2017 by Doug Porter

Despite abundant historical and economic data completely undermining the basic premises for what was called “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” it will become law once the “fixes” are applied due to errors in math, logic, and legal precedent.

As it turns out, the bill was so sloppily written the name had to be changed at the last minute after the Senate Parliamentarian ruled it did not pass muster. Trump may not sign the bill this year because a PAYGO provision won’t be accompanying it.

Republicans have just pulled off the biggest bank heist in U.S. history. More than $1 trillion over the next decade will leave our treasury to be deposited in the bank accounts of the wealthiest Americans and big corporations.

American corporations (which include about 40% foreign investors) are making record profits and the stock market is at an all-time high. (Fact: the market went up more during Obama’s first 11 months than it has under Trump).  Yet Trump and company based the need for tax breaks for corporations on the premise that our economy needs revving up.   [Read more…]

Readers Write: Rep. Issa Needs to Stand Up for DACA

December 20, 2017 by At Large

By Perla Davis

President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Children Arrivals (DACA) program endangers the lives of countless Californian immigrants like myself, and now the Dream Act is being held hostage in return for more dollars that will be spent on ripping immigrant families apart by expanding Trump’s deportation force in the borderlands and beyond. If we have ever needed our Congressperson to demonstrate strong leadership, it is now.

So far, Rep. Darrell Issa has, at best, a mixed record when it comes to the safety of the thousands of immigrant families in his community.

Even though he voted “No” on the Dream Act in 2010, he is now pushing for a DACA fix. But when 34 of his fellow Republican House GOP members signed a letter asking Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to hold a vote to protect Dreamers before the year-end, Rep. Issa decided not to sign it.   [Read more…]

A Tuesday Darrell Issa Protest: Time Lapse | Video Worth Watching

December 20, 2017 by Rich Kacmar

What does the “longest running weekly protest against a US congressman the USA” look like? Look no further. What began back on December 20, 2016 with a few dozen activists, is now celebrating its one year anniversary! It is a weekly event of 300+ unpaid protesters who show up outside of Issa’s Vista office to protest against Darrell Issa, Trump, and the GOP agenda. Here is a time-lapse view of one such event.   [Read more…]

Happy First Issa-versary: 49 Weeks of Protests in the 49th Congressional District

December 19, 2017 by Doug Porter

The few dozen people who met up outside Congressman Darrell Issa’s office on December 20, 2016, were, like millions of Americans, still processing the shock of a Republican victory in the presidential election.

They knew something had to be done, and Issa’s close call in the congressional election gave them hope and, most importantly, a tangible target to protest. His smirking and sneering leadership in Republican efforts to devalue the basic concepts of truth and fairness for partisan gain, his early embrace of a candidate who encouraged the worst in the American zeitgeist, and his confrontational style, all made him a logical choice.

One year later, Issa’s Vista office is the location of largest, most sustained weekly congressional protests in the nation. A core volunteer group of thirty oversees an average weekly attendance of close to 400 people. They show up at 10am and disperse one hour later. Every week. That’s what I call dedication.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activist Calendar, December 15, 2017-January 5, 2018

December 15, 2017 by Doug Porter

The holiday season is upon us, and many groups are taking a break, including the elves and gnomes prowling the interwebs for the Progressive Activist Calendar.  Today’s events listing will be the last one for 2017; I’ll resume on January 5, 2018. I’m posting the Startling Line column separately later today.

Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.

Get your event listed:  I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases. Club meetings will be listed IF there are speakers and they are open to the public.

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
