Resolution to Get Trump’s Taxes from Steven Mnuchin Faced Vote Tuesday

March 29, 2017 by Source

Treasury Department

[Editor’s Note: Yesterday, Tuesday, March 28th, the House voted 228-190 to block more attempts by Democrats to obtain President Donald Trump’s tax returns from the IRS. Here is more about the bill. ]

By Nadia Prupis / Common Dreams

The House Ways and Means Committee is poised to vote on a resolution of inquiry Tuesday that would direct the Treasury Department to release President Donald Trump’s taxes.

H.Res. 186, introduced earlier this month by Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), directs Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to hand over copies of Trump’s returns from 2006 to 2015, as well as any information the department has on his foreign debts and investments and use of tax-avoidance schemes.   [Read more…]

Photo Gallery: Indivisible Holds Issa’s Feet to the Fire

March 28, 2017 by Doug Porter

A progressive coalition led by Indivisible drew the largest ever “Resist Trump Tuesday” crowd outside the Vista office of Rep. Darrell Issa.

A few weeks ago, a hundred people were considered a good turnout. Last week, with a vote on #Trumpcare looming, over 300 people participated in a “die-in” to call attention to the shortcomings of the GOP package.

A head count taken by the group totaled up 620 citizens who came out on a Tuesday morning to call out Issa for not taking a harder line on #TrumpRussia and for his willingness to vote for the AHRA. CNN sent cameras to the protest, airing footage at 4 & 7pm PST.   [Read more…]

Blocking Gorsuch Matters Now More Than Ever

March 27, 2017 by Source

Gorsuch

By Miles Mogulescu / People’s Action Blog

Trump and the Republicans are doing so many things so fast to hurt ordinary Americans, it’s hard for the resistance movement to keep up.

But nothing is more consequential than Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court, which was fast-tracked to the president’s desk by the Koch Brothers-backed Federalist Society.

Gorsuch’s nomination is the latest assault in The Federalist’s successful 30-year campaign to stack the judiciary with right-wing judges and shape the law to favor corporations over workers.   [Read more…]

The Insidious Effect on the Pysche of Trump’s Torrent of Lies

March 22, 2017 by Source

Research shows that repeating a lie, even to refute it, imprints it on our brain

By Neil Baron / AlterNet

There’s a problem with the media’s repetitive refutation of Donald Trump’s lies: It makes them more credible. Research finds that repeating a lie, even to refute it, imprints it on our brains, and they become more memorable than the refutations.   [Read more…]

John Steinbeck’s Road Map For Resisting Donald Trump

March 18, 2017 by Stephen Cooper

A recent blog post of the National Book Critics Circle asked members “at this time of cultural shift” in the dawning era of Donald Trump to identify their “favorite work of resistance literature.” The writer Paul Wilner identified John Steinbeck’s “quietly furious” strike novel In Dubious Battle as his personal choice.

“We may not see the future lying before us,” Wilner explained, “but Steinbeck has provided a valuable road map to the lessons of the past. He may have fought kicking and screaming against the label of ‘engaged’ writer–he’ll never be confused with Sartre, to his credit–but he understood the power, as well as the perils, of resistance.”

True enough, but my choice of road map for resisting Donald Trump would be The Moon Is Down, the play-novella John Steinbeck wrote during the early, dark days of World War II about anti-fascist resistance by the citizens of a Nazi-occupied country in northern Europe. Steinbeck’s little book inspired citizen resistance in Nazi-occupied territories from the Baltic to the Black Sea. It contains practical advice for Americans opposed to Donald Trump’s attitudes and actions as president, 75 years after it was written.   [Read more…]

‘Ides of Trump’ Action Aims to Send More Mail Than White House Can Ignore

March 14, 2017 by Source

By Nadia Prupis / Common Dreams

A new movement is aiming to mail at least 1 million postcards to President Donald Trump on Wednesday, March 15—historically dubbed “the Ides of March” and known as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated—to show “the man, the media, and the politicians how vast our numbers are…to make it irrefutable that the president’s claim of wide support is a farce.”

“He may draw a big crowd with empty promises, but the crowd of those that oppose his agenda is exponentially larger. And we will show up to protest, to vote, and to be heard. Again and again and again,” the group, which calls itself the Ides of Trump, explained on its website and Facebook page.   [Read more…]

Town Halls a la San Diego: Darrell Issa Deflects, Duncan Hunter Sings Off Key

March 13, 2017 by Doug Porter

As town halls in San Diego featuring Representatives Darrell Issa, Duncan Hunter and Susan Davis drew big crowds and garnered national attention, the American Civil Liberties Union rolled out the inaugural event of People Power, with more than 2,200 events in cities coast-to-coast.

Women from all over the region at City College, supporters of Planned Parenthood in Vista, and Muslim youth at UCSD all participated in events responding to the policies and proclamations of the Trump administration. People in North Park filled out protest postcards to mail to the administration, a union local hosted a panel discussing the future of local activism, and health care advocates gathered in Mission Valley to discuss a path forward to a single payer system in California.

And the Huffington Post published what could be the ultimate cautionary tale for activists, pulling together threads about a social media disinformation campaign aimed at promoting divisions during the 2016 presidential campaign. San Diego activist John Mattes’ efforts to uncover the truth about the conspiracy news stories spread through Facebook pages seemingly favorable to candidate Bernie Sanders start off the story.

Progressive Calendar for San Diego Activists, March 10 – 21, 2017

March 10, 2017 by Doug Porter

Wow. Here’s another calendar packed full of events for local activists. I’ve made some cosmetic changes this week, including icons to make events more recognizable.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement and a few reading suggestions.

Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases.   [Read more…]

Darrell & Duncan Staging Saturday Town Halls in Oceanside & Ramona

March 9, 2017 by Doug Porter

Persistence pays, I think the woman said. Two previously shy Congressmen have now scheduled forums where constituents will (maybe) have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the destruction of guardrails along the road towards Making America Great Again.

GOP Representative Darrell Issa made it official yesterday, pulling permits for a Saturday morning forum at Junior Seau Recreation Center in Oceanside. One hour sessions are scheduled for 8:30 & 10am, with reservations for residents of District 49 being accepted at Issa’s website starting at noon on Thursday.

Rep. Duncan Hunter’s town hall, announced on February 24, is also scheduled for Saturday, March 11. It is being held at the Ramona Mainstage, a venue best known as home for the local Tea Party affiliate. Doors are scheduled to open at 9:15; the Congressman will answer question cards collected from the audience in advance starting at 10am.   [Read more…]

Readers Write: International Women’s Day Gets the Trump Treatment

March 9, 2017 by Michael-Leonard Creditor

By Michael-Leonard Creditor

Since SDFP was striking on Wednesday when this happened, I thought I’d take the opportunity to express my outrage in your stead.

He didn’t. He said WHAT? Oh, the man is utterly stupefying and infuriating. A true sociopath, he will say anything in the moment regardless of how his prior actions absolutely give lie to the words. And even when he seems to be trying to say something positive, he simply can’t.   [Read more…]
