Progressive Activist Calendar April 21- May 1, 2017: 100 Days of Resisting

April 21, 2017 by Doug Porter

Activist Calendar

President Trump is lumbering towards the hundred day mark as I’m writing this, desperate to be seen as doing something, anything. The latest scheme is to try and horsetrade funding for the wall in return for not throwing a bunch of poor people’s healthcare away.

It won’t work, but not for lack of trying. Thanks to massive and ongoing resistance, the deal he’s offering is a non-starter for much of the Congress.

There are lots of local things to check out this week, and I urge you to think both globally and locally.   [Read more…]

BunnyPAC Makes Duncan Hunter Look Uber Silly

April 18, 2017 by Doug Porter

Congressman Duncan Hunter is now being stalked by a pesky wabbit.

BunnyPAC.org is the website for a political action committee dedicated to focusing on Hunter’s campaign finance issues.

Created by Democratic political activist Shawn VanDiver, the site features the musings of Duncan Thumper: “Congressman Hunter’s first bunny, ethics advisor, and insightful political mind.”   [Read more…]

Call to Action: Trump Is Bad For Business in San Diego

April 17, 2017 by Doug Porter

Chamber Congressional Luncheon Targeted for Protest

The economy of America’s Finest City is threatened by the policies and executive actions of the Trump administration.

Economic nationalism, as envisioned by the White House with its higher trade and immigration barriers, will hurt tech industries, higher education, and tourism, all of which are major components of the local business landscape.

A coalition of organizations led by Indivisible chapters is calling for a demonstration late Friday morning outside downtown’s Manchester Grand Hyatt, as all five members of San Diego’s congressional delegation meet with the chamber of commerce.

The plan is to ask the congressional members (and the Chamber itself) whether they’ll be working for Trump or for San Diego – because they can’t do both.   [Read more…]

In Congress This Week: Congress on Two Week Easter Recess

Health Care- 45 is threatening to take away subsidies for ACA–destabilizing insurance markets–to get Dems to come to the table. Stay away Dems! Warren Davidson, a Freedom Caucus member, asked voters to give the GOP a 60-vote Senate in 2018 so they can “get things done.” Let’s all have an angry laugh about that. YEAH RIGHT, BOZOS!   [Read more…]

San Diego Tax March: A Photo Gallery and Videos

April 15, 2017 by Staff

San Diego Tax March

The protest remained peaceful. Often passing cars honked in alliance. Many marchers thanked police officers along the route.

The march ended at the Civic Center at about noon. Two men stood by the Civic Center, one with a sign that read “Why is Diversity & Mass Immigration Only In White Nations?” the other holding his iPhone and filming.

A small handful of people gathered to ask questions, since the men seemed to want to provoke the crowd. Listen to this dialogue that shows the work protestors still have ahead:   [Read more…]

Marching for Trump Tax Transparency

April 11, 2017 by Source

By Sarah Anderson / Common Dreams

Candidate Trump repeatedly promised to release his past tax returns, once they were no longer being audited. But those promises have failed to materialize, and Trump appears to have no plans to release his 2016 returns either. This makes him the first president in 40 years to conceal this information from the public.

A broad coalition of groups has come together to offer an opportunity for people to vent their anger over Trump’s tax secrecy. On April 15 (Tax Day), they’ve organized marches in 48 states and even a few non-U.S. cities like London and Tokyo to demand that he release his tax returns. (Information on local tax marches in Downtown and North County in included in the story)   [Read more…]

Anti-Trumpcare Ad Will Greet Issa and Other House Republicans Home for Recess

April 11, 2017 by Source

By Laura Clawson / Daily Kos

Seven House Republicans in competitive districts aren’t going to be able to hide from their support for—or even their cowardly silence on—Trumpcare. As they go home for a two-week recess, more than $1 million in ads are hitting the air to let voters know the score.

“Congressman [Darrell] Issa promised to protect our health care, but when right-wing politicians tried to pass a disastrous health care repeal bill that raises cost and cuts coverage, Issa wouldn’t oppose them,” a male narrator intones as ominous music plays, in one version of the 30-second spot.

The ads target five Republican lawmakers from districts won by Hillary Clinton, including Issa, whose Orange County district Clinton carried by eight points. Other Republicans in Clinton-won districts include Arizona’s Martha McSally, Colorado’s Mike Coffman and Florida’s Carlos Curbelo and California’s David Valadao.   [Read more…]

In Congress This Week – April 10, 2017

April 10, 2017 by Staff

Congress is on a two-week recess for Easter. No time to rest!
Here are the areas to keep up pressure. Choose one or two and call your Representative or attend a rally/march.

1) Continue to insist on independent investigation of Trump’s ties with Russia.
2) Opposing any health care legislation that would punish older folks, women, children and people with lower income etc.
3) Insisting that Trump release his tax returns/cease conflicts of interest
4) Reminding Trump that he needs congressional approval to go to war.   [Read more…]

Veterans For Peace Condemns U.S. Actions In Syria

April 8, 2017 by Source

war Syria

By Veterans For Peace

Veterans For Peace condemns the illegal U.S. attack in Syria. We call on the Trump Administration to immediately end all military actions in Syria and to begin intense U.S. diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in the region. We call on our members and all those who want an end to U.S. wars to contact the President and Congress, to meet and talk to people about peaceful means to end the war in Syria and hit the streets to make our resistance to war visible.   [Read more…]

San Diego Resistance: Coast to Coast, Persisting and Connecting

April 5, 2017 by Doug Porter

In venues large and small, with local and national issues, with methods ranging from silent support to civil disobedience, San Diegans expressed themselves politically on Tuesday, April 4.

This advocacy was felt, seen, and heard from Washington DC, where protesting union members were escorted from a speech by President Trump to the Mayor of San Diego’s office where activists sat-in to demand enforcement of minimum wage laws and racial justice to a school board meeting where Muslim parents and their supporters came to witness a discussion about combating harassment and Islamophobia in local schools.

There were also protests at local congressional offices in downtown San Diego, Vista, and Temecula, along with delegations flocking to city council meetings in National City and Chula Vista. And then there were women wearing red everywhere (along with a downtown rally), reminding us of pervasive pay scale inequality throughout the workforce.   [Read more…]

Turning the Ingenious Tables: Buying the Right To the Privacy Of Those Who Sold Yours

March 31, 2017 by Source

By Abby Zimet / Common Dreams

If You Can’t Fight ‘Em Join ‘Em Dept: Now that Congress has voted to sell your Internet history to the highest bidder – be it telecom giant, marketing company, Big Brother, law enforcement, pushy bank, vengeful ex or anyone with any questionable agenda – a new crowdfunding campaign wants to raise enough money to buy the histories of those GOP leaders and lobbying racketeers who sold yours.

The website searchinternethistory.com, one of several proposed resistance efforts, is trying to raise $1 million to bid on the browsing history – financial to medical to pornographic – of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and every member of Congress who voted to gut former Obama-era regulations protecting our browser history from corporate and governmental busybodies.

Some sold their souls and your privacy rights for as little as $300 in donations.   [Read more…]

What We Did In The Resistance (Part 1)

March 30, 2017 by Source

By Alison Luterman / Rattle

In the beginning, we wept.
Well, some of us wept.
Some of us walked around stunned
as if pieces of sky
had fallen out of the sky and revealed themselves
to be chunks of blue plaster.
We examined the chunks.
We shook plaster dust out of our hair—there was so much dust!
We craned our necks and stared up.   [Read more…]
