San Diego Protests Are Still On: Trump’s Immigration Action Just Makes Things Worse

June 20, 2018 by Doug Porter

This article has three parts, a simple explanation of what’s coming up from the government, a listing of San Diego responses to Trump’s immigration policies over the next 10 days, and an analysis of what’s likely going to happen on the legal and political fronts in the coming days.

I cobbled these sections together from other people’s work to make the situation more understandable for our readers.

You need to know the only things changed today were the details. Your voice is needed more than ever to stop these abominations.   [Read more…]

‘Tender Age Facilities’ the Most Grotesque Orwellian Doublespeak of All

June 20, 2018 by Anna Daniels

Is there no limit to bureaucratic sadism?

“Where are the girls? Where are the babies and toddlers?” are the questions many of us have been asking all week.

We have learned that the GOP is our domestic Boko Haram, silent on the location of the girls and their treatment. And now we have learned that the babies, the children who have been ripped from their mothers’ arms are being placed in “Tender Age Facilities.” These are not shelters. These are prisons—for babies and toddlers who sit unattended in cages.

Over 2,300 children have been separated from their families since May. The GOP is a terrorist organization.   [Read more…]

Who Needs the Constitution? The Bible Tells Them So | Progressive Activist Calendar June 15-25, 2018

June 15, 2018 by Doug Porter

“The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. An evil soul producing holy witness Is like a villain with a smiling cheek, A goodly apple rotten at the heart. O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!” – The Merchant of Venice, Act I, Scene 3

The last time I checked, the ultimate authority on the law in the United States is the Constitution. In their quest for rationalizing cruel and unusual treatment of migrants, Trump’s officials have decided to bypass this document, claiming the moral high ground by using biblical verses.

There is a larger point besides the inappropriateness and sordid history of this particular verse, namely that the Attorney General has chosen to make a theocratic argument. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, creating a theocratic state is the ultimate goal of a majority of conservative Republicans in government.

America, the UnBeautiful: Otay Mesa Protest, Border Patrol Harassment, & Children in Cages

June 11, 2018 by Doug Porter

Border Patrol Targets Demonstrators

In what is likely the first in a series of immigration-related protests, several hundred people came to a rally outside the Otay Mesa Detention Center on Sunday demanding the release of asylum seekers fleeing gang violence and state repression.

They were taking up the cause of asylum seekers who –for the most part–have voluntarily turned themselves at the border. Little did the protesters know their own participation in the event would lead to harassment by border authorities.

Protests are spreading nationwide in the wake of horrific reports of abuse and mistreatment by immigration agencies. People are speaking out against a President who refers to immigrants as ‘animals’ and implements policies inflicting punishment on people whose rights to due process are rapidly vanishing.   [Read more…]

Elections Are Just One Small Part of Activism | Progressive Activist Calendar June 8-18, 2018

June 8, 2018 by Doug Porter

Advocates for traditional political parties all-too-often have a vested interest in convincing the public the next election is going to change the way things are. It’s understandable, I suppose, for them to want to keep the attention and donor dollars focused on their mission.

The reality is that elections don’t mean squat without other forms of political expression. Rallies, protests, educational events, letter writing, and plain ol’ organizing are what drive the electoral process. Voting –especially in the primaries– ultimately amounts to a bargaining session, where we’re asked to make choices somewhere between what’s desired and what’s doable.

I’ve noticed over the years the choices get better as the political noise gets louder.   [Read more…]

Walking, Talking, and Voting for the June 5 Primary | Progressive Activist Calendar June 1 -10, 2018

June 1, 2018 by Doug Porter

Also-Facebook Thinks We’re Russian Trolls!-See Inside

Let’s talk about failing to make the effort to cast your ballot by June 5. Not voting means you approve of the status quo, even more so than people who actually vote for entrenched reactionary incumbents. Not voting means you’re dumb enough to think not participating is some kind of protest. It’s true many of the choices offered on the ballot are less than ideal. It’s true both political parties are run by people more concerned about money than principles.

It’s also true if everybody voted this country’s policies would be a lot closer to the values of (most of) its people. That’s why those with the most privilege are the least concerned about voter turnout. Some of our nation’s 1 percenters spend money to make it more difficult to actually vote. Others spend money to create the impression it’s a waste of time. Others have fouled the discourse so much that independent outlets are prevented from promoting their views.

If you marched in protest of Trump’s bs and don’t vote, you’ve more than canceled out any good karma you may have received.   [Read more…]

Santa Fe High Shooting Makes It 22 This Year [So Far] – Progressive Activist Calendar, May 18 – 31, 2018

May 18, 2018 by Doug Porter

The latest victims of America’s gun madness are students at Santa Fe High School, about 30 miles outside of Houston, Texas. As I’m writing this, the death count is at ten, with more at local hospitals being treated for injuries.

The shooter, who is in custody, was found with an AR-15 style rifle, a pistol, a shotgun, and pipe bombs.

Today’s outrage raises the count to twenty-two school shooting events in 2018. Ten of these have happened since the February massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Today’s outrage happened just one week after NRA President (and felon) Oliver North called the Parkland kids terrorists, and two weeks after Donald Trump and Mike Pence were shilling at the NRA convention and inciting violence.   [Read more…]

Citizens Group Asks: “Who ya’ Gonna Call When the Sheriff and District Attorney Break the Law?”

May 16, 2018 by Doug Porter

A protest against the visual pollution and littering throughout the region associated with the run-up to the June 5 primary is set for Thursday (5/17) at 11am.

Event organizers are asking people to meet at the intersection of Midway Drive and Rosecrans Street, a busy intersection cluttered with campaign signs paid for by Independent Expenditure committees in support of Sheriff Bill Gore and interim District Attorney Summer Stephan.  I suspect, given the location and the timing, attendance will be limited. The symbolism of the protest will be huge, reflecting the concerns of people wanting to see our criminal justice system reformed.

The group will be rallying in front of the local offices of Déjà Vu, a strip club company with 132 locations in 41 states. Campaign signs for Gore and Stephan are prominently displayed on locations around the property. It will be an interesting juxtaposition, given the appointed DA’s reputation based on fighting human trafficking and the reputation of the adult entertainment industry as a facilitator in such activities.   [Read more…]

When We Vote, We Win. Just Show Up & Vote. | Progressive Activist Calendar May 11- 21, 2018

May 11, 2018 by Doug Porter

At an election rally in Indiana, this week supporters of the President were chanting “lock her up” as he went on stage, referring to his opponent in the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton. The pre-midterm event also including a suggestion from the stage that extending Trump’s presidency beyond two terms was a viable option.

Our environment is being fouled, the rule of law is being degraded, personal greed has replaced service to the nation, extremists and bigotry are venerated, and increasing oppression by race, gender, and class are the order of the day.  And, oh yeah, how’s that $1.50 a week in increased income from ‘tax reform’ doing when it comes to escalating insurance premiums (Trumpcare) and soaring gas prices (backing out of the Iran deal)?

Think the gas tax was bad? Just wait until you see what instability in the Middle East does to prices at the pump. Donald Trump’s name won’t be on the primary election ballot, but the names of his enablers will be.    [Read more…]

Drilling Off California’s Coast – A Supremely Bad Idea

May 10, 2018 by At Large

By Karen Hughes / SanDiego350

The Trump Administration has proposed opening up nearly all our nation’s offshore waters, including off our California shores, to drilling. This Jan. 4, 2018, proposal is a slap in the face to anyone who wants to safeguard this planet we call our home. And we must act now to oppose it.

Damage from Oil Spills — The risks of offshore drilling are undeniable, and most Californians oppose new drilling. Not least among these risks are oil spills which occur during various stages of oil production. Small daily leaks from drilling operations harm the marine ecosystem. A map of Marine life along the Pacific Coast illustrates some of the species potentially harmed by oil spills. And then there’s the very real potential for catastrophic spills.

Most of us will remember the devastating explosion in 2010 at a BP well in the Gulf of Mexico which killed 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. That explosion resulted in an almost three-month-long oil spill, affecting wildlife, marine ecosystems and livelihoods and fouling the shore from Texas to Florida.

Workers Suffer While the UFCW Plays Politics | Progressive Activist Calendar May 4 – 14, 2018

May 4, 2018 by Doug Porter

The Union-Tribune and Times of San Diego have both posted stories about a U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit filed on Thursday.  A San Carlos Albertsons is alleged to have created a hostile work environment and harassed Hispanic employees by forbidding them from speaking Spanish on the premises, even to each other on break or to Spanish-speaking customers.

From the Times of San Diego:

Beginning in late 2012, the Albertsons store on Lake Murray Boulevard near Navajo Road prohibited employees from speaking Spanish around non-Spanish speakers, including when they spoke to Spanish-speaking customers and during breaks, the suit said.   [Read more…]
