The Battle of Cable Street – the London East Ender’s Response to Fascism | Video Worth Watching
Eighty one years ago last Wednesday, October 4th, 1936, Londoners stood up to the threat of Fascism in England at the Battle of Cable Street. This was about eight months after the release of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times. In Europe, the Fascists were in power in Germany under Hitler and in Italy under Mussolini. In Spain, Franco had begun receiving military support from Germany and Italy in his battle against the Popular Front. Londoners were familiar with nature of Fascism and its virulent anti-semitism.
In England, the British Union of Fascists led by Oswald Mosley were planning to lead a march of about 3,000 in their blackshirt uniforms through the East End of London, which at the time had a predominantly Jewish population. The government hesitated to ban the Fascists from marching and instead dispatched a contingent of about 6,000 Metropolitan Police in an attempt to protect the Fascists. The Young’uns’ Cable Street describes how citizens opposed to Fascism who understood the march to be an attack on the Jewish residents and on solidarity in general, responded. In two words: No pasarán! [Read more…]

It’s Helter Skelter Time in Trumpland, Plus – Progressive Activist Calendar October 6-16, 2017
It must feel as though the walls are closing in at the White House. And the President’s responses go way beyond Twitter.
CNN reports Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team met with Christopher Steele, the former MI-6 officer whose dossier on alleged Russian involvement with the Trump campaign triggered months of investigations. Steele was reportedly willing to name his heretofore secret sources.
Politico reported on GOP donors, frustrated with the lack of accomplishments, closing their wallets. Contributions to the National Republican Senatorial Committee have fallen by 50% in recent months. The President took time out from his Las Vegas photo ops to meet with top donor Sheldon Adelson, who reportedly was unhappy about what’s not going on. [Read more…]

Google, Facebook, and Donald Trump Want to Control Your Media Choices
Two seemingly different stories illustrate the external challenges faced by media in the 21st century.
The President wants the news media investigated by Congress.
Google’s algorithm changes made earlier this year are impacting more than the just the purveyors of fraudulent news accounts.
These threats come on top of the ongoing collapse of the traditional business model(s) responsible for funding the fourth estate. [Read more…]
Notions of Love Rising Out of the Darkness in Las Vegas
I just left Vegas a few days ago, with very fresh memories of how loud and all aglow it was, which makes it particulary difficult for me, in these moments, to fathom a man mowing down people who are having a good time as though they were foes on a battlefield.
Such a tragedy tears at your heart and it came at a time when we Americans are already suffering as we seem to be spinning aimlessly away from embracing each other as fellow citizens.
Like, for example, the situation with NFL players, of all people, who kneeled on one knee, before us and the world, when our anthem was being played to bring awareness to the ongoing racism people of color face – and, instead of “we the people” condemning the injustice these citizen-athletes highlighted, we yelled at them and booed them and called them un-American when protesting is about as American as being an American can be. Councilman Cate Admits to Confidential Memo Leak, Refuses to Resign
San Diego’s reputation for stealthy relationships between land developers and elected officials got a boost on Tuesday as the source for a leaked memo revealed himself.
At a hastily called press conference, City Councilman Chris Cate came clean, admitting to giving a confidential legal communication to proponents of a proposed Mission Valley development marketed under the name Soccer City.
The press release –sent by a public relations firm associated with the developers of Soccer City– made it seem like this disclosure was no big deal.
Except that it IS a big deal. [Read more…]
