A Lament for Michael Brown Echoes On In St. Louis | Video Worth Watching
As trumpeter Keyon Harrold says on the YouTube page of this video:
In tribute to the many unarmed woman, men, and children killed tragically and unjustifiably before their time.

UPDATED: Do You Really Want to Pay More for Dirtier Electricity? – Progressive Calendar September 15-25, 2017
Here comes the blizzard of baloney* from defenders of San Diego Gas & Electric.
City News Service reports a coalition of business and civic leaders are now working to undermine Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs.
CCEs –where power is purchased by public entities– across the state offer electricity with significantly more renewable content and comparable or lower costs. Customers can choose to stay with the status quo, if wanted.
The ‘Clear the Air Coalition’ would like to halt the move toward the cheaper, cleaner, and locally generated electricity in San Diego because of “uncertainties.” [Read more…]

Press Conferences on Homelessness In San Diego: Another Way of Saying “Let Them Eat Cake”
When it comes to unsheltered citizens, San Diego serves as the poster child for what not to do in responding to a crisis. The City Without Pity has now attracted international attention for its failure to serve its homeless humans.
Hundreds of people have contracted Hepatitis A and sixteen are dead from the highly contagious disease. Handwashing stations have been set up after months of delay, sidewalks are being power washed with bleach, and the City has presented the press with a list of places where it thinks homeless humans should go if they need to use the toilet.
Mayor Kevin Faulconer held a press conference on Wednesday to announce he would accept $1.5 million raised by local businessmen. Three tents with services will offer a few hundred people the opportunity to get off the streets. In three months. Maybe. [Read more…]

ESPN sportscaster Jemele Hill in a recent Tweet stated that “Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.” and “His rise is a direct result of white supremacy. Period.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, when asked to comment on the Tweet, said that “I think that’s one of the more outrageous comments that anyone could make and certainly something that I think is a fireable offense by ESPN.” All In’s Chris Hayes invites Brittney Cooper, Professor of Africana Studies, Rutgers University, and Jason Johnson, Professor of Political Science, Morgan State University, to discuss. Let the Medicare For All Debate Begin!
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation acknowledging that health care is a right, not a privilege. Medicare for All, as we’re now calling it, doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of becoming law anytime soon.
Still, this is a discussion worth having, as fifteen or so Democratic Senators have agreed to be co-sponsors. Even as we continue to oppose Republican attempts take the nation back to the 19th century, it is time to be FOR something.
As I understand it, the Sanders bill would cover everything from emergency surgery to prescription drugs, from mental health to eye care–and this is a biggie–along with dental care with no co-payments. [Read more…]

Edie And Thea: A Love Story | Video Worth Watching
R.I.P. Edith Windsor (June 20, 1929 – September 12, 2017). Edith and her partner of over 40 years, Thea Spyer, were married in Toronto, Canada in May 2007. Thea had been diagnosed in 1977 with progressive multiple sclerosis and at the time of their marriage was already gravely suffering from related conditions. Thea died from complications related to her heart condition on February 5, 2009. On Thea’s death, Edith inherited her estate, and she was subsequently presented with a bill for $363,053 for federal estate taxes. If federal law had recognized the validity of their marriage, she would have been eligible for an unlimited spousal deduction and would not have owed anything in federal tax. Edith attempted to claim the spousal deduction but the IRS denied the request citing Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as the reason and compelled her to pay. Even though on the surface the issue was one of tax liability, fundamentally it was about equality. Thus, on November 9th, 2010, Edith filed the federal lawsuit seeking a refund that would eventually become the Supreme Court case United States v. Windsor where she succeeded in having the court declare Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. [Read more…]
