The Center on Policy Initiatives (CPI) Executive Director Kyra Green blasts the the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on their attempt to prevent having the Full Voter Participation Act (FVPA) measure appear on this November’s general election ballot by first requiring a preliminary study. Robert Reich: 10 Steps To Finding Common Ground | Video Worth Watching

August 14, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Robert Reich lays down some common sense suggestions for fostering dialogue with folks that may not share one’s political viewpoints. I know there are persuasive arguments for not even attempting to engage the hard-core Republican fanatics, but not all non-democrats are hardcore Trump/Pence racist types. Plus it’s important to listen and hear what others are saying as well as being able to articulate one’s own viewpoint.   [Read more…]

August 11, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

As we mark the one year anniversary of the death of Heather Heyer and two law enforcement officers during a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, a year ago today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is promoting a web site it created dedicated to Fighting Hate—a guide to opposing the bigotry and hatred of white nationalism and neo-nazi movements. It presents a plan and suggests courses of action for creating a counter force of tolerance and inclusion.   [Read more…]

Claire de Lune x 2 : NASA and Kamasi Washington | Video Worth Watching

August 11, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the NASA Goddard YouTube web page:

The visualization was created to accompany a performance of Clair de Lune by the National Symphony Orchestra Pops, led by conductor Emil de Cou, at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on June 1 and 2, 2018, as part of a celebration of NASA’s 60th anniversary.

The visualization uses a digital 3D model of the Moon built from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter global elevation maps and image mosaics. The lighting is derived from actual Sun angles during lunar days in 2018.

And for another take on this classic Debussy work, here’s an arrangement by saxaphonist Kamasi Washington.   [Read more…]

Sharice Davids: Fighting for Progress | Video Worth Watching

August 10, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Another example of a winning Democratic primary campaign ad. Although not the candidate endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Davids is still running on a campaign of affordable health care, quality education, economic opportunity, gun safety and environmental responsibility. If successful in the general election she will represent a number of firsts: the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas, one of the first Native American women in Congress, and the first congresswoman with a mixed martial arts history. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill candidate.   [Read more…]

Crashing Sean Spicer’s Book Tour, or Trolling with Unicorns | Video Worth Watching

August 9, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

The Full Frontal crew shadows Sean Spicer during his book tour, trying to get answers to pressing questions such as “How do you feel about profiting off of lying to the American public?” And in an obvious homage to Spicer’s descriptive genius, for his Rhode Island Country Club appearance the crew recreates with an actual costume, one of the jaw-droppingly inspirational passages from Spicer’s work: “[Trump] is a unicorn, riding a unicorn over a rainbow.” You have to see it to believe it.   [Read more…]

“Earth Will Be Annihilated”: On 73rd Anniversary of Hiroshima Bombing, a Warning Against Nuclear War | Video Worth Watching

August 7, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the Democracy Now! YouTube page:

[Monday marked] the 73rd anniversary of the United States’ atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, which killed 140,000 people and seriously injured another 100,000. In remembrance, we turn to the words of a Hiroshima survivor, or hibakusha. Koji Hosokawa was 17 years old when the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. His 13-year-old sister Yoko died in the bombing. He gave us a tour of the city when Democracy Now! was in Japan in 2014. He spoke to us near the A-Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, one of the few structures in the city that survived the atomic blast.
