What Life Is Like on Gaza’s Side of the Fence | Video Worth Watching

May 16, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Most of the coverage on these events that I’ve seen have focused strictly on the border violence. Here’s something that attempts to provide a bit more context. From The New York Times YouTube site:

Palestinians in Gaza are taking part in mass protests, demanding an end to the 11-year blockade of the territory and a return to lands in what is now Israel. The Times’s Jerusalem bureau chief reports from the region.

Why Are Cities Still So Segregated? | Video Worth Watching

May 15, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

From the NPR YouTube site:

In 1968, Congress passed the Fair Housing Act that made it illegal to discriminate in housing. Gene Demby of NPR’s Code Switch explains why neighborhoods are still so segregated today.

Our local KPBS station has what might be considered a companion piece to this video: Redlining’s Mark On San Diego Persists 50 Years After Housing Protections. It includes maps of San Diego showing the red-lined areas and a link to the April 5th Midday Edition podcast featuring Stephen Russell, executive director, San Diego Housing Federation and Richard Rothstein, author of “The Color of Law”.   [Read more…]

Childish Gambino – This Is America | Video Worth Watching

May 12, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

For Donald Glover – “This is America”. This may not be the America that you or I experience, but I believe it’s an authentic, albeit terrifying, vision by Glover interpreted in his musical persona Childish Gambino.

What does it all mean? The lyrics suggest a theme, but don’t truly explicate. Images and poses suggesting Jim Crow iconography abound. Many have commented on the significance of Glover choosing Daniel Kaluuya, the star of Jordan Peele’s movie Get Out, with its “Sunken Place”, to introduce Glover’s performance of the work on Saturday Night Live. The immense popularity of the video (posted on May 5th it had 83 million views as of May 12th) has spawned a plethora of videos attempting to interpret the work, but to my knowledge Glover hasn’t weighed in on any of them. There’s also commentary online, and the curious may want to check out The Daily Beast’s Ira Madison, III, The HuffPost’s Hayley Miller, The Rolling Stone’s Tre Johnson or Brittany Spanos.   [Read more…]

Trita Parsi: I Was Targeted by Black Cube in Dirty Ops Effort Attacking Supporters of Iran Deal | Video Worth Watching

May 11, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Trita Parsi, head of the National Iranian American Council, says he was targeted by an Israeli private intelligence agency over his support for the Iran nuclear deal. The agency, Black Cube, was hired to orchestrate a “dirty ops” campaign against members of the Obama administration who negotiated the nuclear agreement. The Guardian reports Trump’s aides hired Black Cube; The New York Times says it’s not yet clear who hired the intelligence firm. Among those Black Cube was hired to investigate and discredit were Obama’s top national security aide Benjamin Rhodes and Vice President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Colin Kahl. Black Cube is made up of former officials from the Mossad and other Israeli agencies. It is the same firm hired by disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to stop publication of articles that exposed him as a sexual predator.   [Read more…]

Bioluminescent Waves in San Diego, Red Tide = Blue Waves | Video Worth Watching

May 10, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

The last few nights, San Diego coastal observers from La Jolla, north to Encinitas, were treated to a natural light show. A bloom of a certain kind of algae that turns the color of the ocean water to a brownish-red shade, also creates a bluish-white light at night when the force of the surf triggers the critters’ bio-luminescence. I haven’t discovered any videos posted yet of this current event, but for the curious who haven’t had the good fortune to be able to observe this first-hand, here is a clip of the same kind of event that occurred in 2014, filmed along Del Mar and Solana Beach.   [Read more…]

Sessions Vows to Prosecute All Illegal Border Crossers and Separate Children From Their Parents | Video Worth Watching

May 8, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

This Monday, May 7th, Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited Scottsdale, Arizona and here in San Diego, to deliver the message that the Justice Department will begin prosecuting every person who illegally crosses into the United States along the Southwest border.

In other words, the Justice Department’s vision will no longer see families desperately fleeing violence and persecution, they will only see criminals attempting to break border crossing laws. For families traveling together, they will see adults smuggling children; adults who must be jailed, separating them from their smuggling “victims”, even if they are their children.

The Washington Post reported that

In San Diego, Sessions was interrupted by a heckler with a megaphone.

“We don’t want you in our state,” the man yelled. “Are you going to be separating families? Is that why you’re here? Why are you doing this? Do you have a heart? Do you have a soul? Why do you work for this administration?”

Those questions went unanswered.

JustSomeMotion (JSM) – The JSM Hallway Dance (Jamie Berry feat. Octavia Rose – Lost in the Rhythm) | Video Worth Watching

May 6, 2018 by Rich Kacmar

Time for a change up. After yesterday’s somewhat lugubrious, even if bluesy selection, here’s an up-tempo toe-tapping electro-swing rhythm that JustSomeMotion demonstrates is not just for the dance floor or the hallway; he takes it to the street.   [Read more…]
