Our immigration laws have a history, and it’s not pretty. A recent segment of the Rachel Maddow show provided a glimpse of how the foundation of immigration policy was an effort to make the country white again, based on the 1890 census. Knowing more about the origin and intent of immigration legislation, the current controversies make more sense. It’s kind of spooky comparing statements made in the 1920’s with some of the positions taken today. [Read more…]
How Long Will It Take the GOP to Draft a Tax Bill? ‘Two Weeks’ | Video Worth Watching
When I hear talk in the news of when we might expect to see a GOP tax bill, the time frame appears to be “two weeks”. Chris Hayes on his MSNBC program “All In” even had a segment that featured multiple news clips showing how often that unit of measurement is used by our current president. I suspect our contemporary grifter is channeling the 1986 comedy classic “The Money Pit”. Tom Hanks or Shelley Long fans will remember the scenes where estimates by the Shirk brothers crew of how long any particular event would take were always “two weeks”. [Read more…]
California Senator Kamala Harris Interviewed on DACA, the Dreamer Act and ‘Medicare for All’ | Video Worth Watching
One of our California senators, Kamala Harris, appeared on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Laurence O’Donnell to discuss her efforts to craft a legislative solution to the problem created for Dreamers by the termination of the DACA program. The discussion also included some developments with the Senate Intelligence Committee’s relation to Special Prosecutor Mueller’s investigation, and her being the first co-sponsor of Senator Sanders “Medicare for All” bill. Dolores: Rebel. Activist. Feminist. Mother. | Video Worth Watching
Q: What do Angela Davis, Luis Valdez and Gloria Steinem have in common? A: They all appear in the movie “Dolores”, about labor organizer and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta. While surfing the interwebs today I came across a Democracy Now! segment that featured Amy Goodman interviewing Dolores about the current DACA situation. In the course of the interview Amy mentioned that there’s a new film out about her and that piqued my curiosity. With a little more research I discovered that “Dolores” is a Carlos Santana production written, directed and produced by Peter Bratt and it’s just been released!
The film’s website shows that Dolores Huerta will be appearing in person at the Ken Cinema on Friday, September 22th for a Q&A at 4:45 pm and for the screening at 7:10 pm. Other members of the Huerta family, including Maria Elena Chavez and Rick Chavez, will be attending in person on Saturday, September 23rd for the 7:10 screening. [Read more…]
Studs Terkel: ‘Labor Day’s coming up!’ | Video Worth Watching
Maybe it’s because he authored a book titled “Working”, maybe it’s because he was employed by the Works Progress Administration in his early years, maybe it’s just because he so obviously loved the work he did, but for me Studs Terkel personifies the idea of a labor of love, and of the good, caring and kind aspects of work. So, on Labor Day, here’s a brief clip of Studs relating with his disarmingly charming delivery, an anecdote with a Labor Day theme. [Read more…]
A ‘Dreamer’s’ Emotional Journey to Mexico and Back | Video Worth Watching
On Tuesday we’re expecting an announcement about the future of DACA. Local groups are planning to show support for the program’s participants, known as Dreamers, on that day downtown at the San Diego County Water Park at 6:00 PM. Alliance San Diego posted on its Facebook page a video that provides some real life context about one participant in this program. Her situation is a bit unusual in that before traveling outside the country to visit Mexico to meet with deported veterans and others struggling with deportation issues she was able to obtain approval to return to the United States. Here is A “Dreamer’s” Emotional Journey to Mexico and Back. [Read more…]
Union Town by Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman | Another Video Worth Watching
A little more music for the weekend, this selection in the spirit of the Labor Day holiday: Union Town by Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman. Don’t think there are any clips of San Diego in this video, so for us this may be aspirational rather than descriptive, but we’re working on it … [Read more…]
DACA: ‘We Didn’t Come This Far to Give Up’ | Video Worth Watching
Who are the DACA Dreamers? While there are statistics that profile the make up of the nearly 665,000 program participants it should be obvious that there is no one description that can do justice to the diversity of that group. Here, though, is a personal introduction to one of those individuals—Juan Escalante—and his call to action. [Read more…]
Sia: Soon We’ll Be Found | Another Video Worth Watching
I just have to have some music on the weekend, so here’s another video for today. I hope you’ll find this one not only aurally engaging, but visually moving. [Read more…]
Remembering Molly Ivins | Video Worth Watching
There’s been a lot of troubling news from Texas lately, and thinking of Texas reminds me of a sad anniversary, the passing of Texan Molly Ivins in February of 2007. But as sad as the anniversary is, reflecting on Molly Ivins herself is irresistibly uplifting. Here’s a brief sample of Molly’s irreverent wit that ran as a tribute on PBS’s MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour after her passing. It’s all you need to know about Texan art. [Read more…]
What Are the Potential Industrial Environmental Disasters Due to Hurricane Harvey’s Flooding? | Video Worth Watching
Most coverage of the devastation along the southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana coastal areas focuses on the impact of the flooding on residential and urban areas. What is under-reported is the impact on industrial areas. The Galveston Bay area is responsible for about a third of the petroleum refinery capacity in the United States, and nearly half of the U.S. petrochemical manufacturing. It should not be surprising then, given the current Hurricane Harvey related flooding conditions, that the potential danger and damage to the area and the environment is extreme.
Amy Goodman and Renée Feltz of Democracy Now! hear from Bryan Parras, organizer with the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Dirty Fuels” campaign, and with TEJAS (Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) reporting from the heart of the Petro-Metro industrial zone. He tells us that there has already been a report of an incident in La Porte of the escape, which has since been contained, of anhydrous hydrogen chloride, a gas which when it mixes with the moisture in the air produces hydrochloric acid. Of greater concern is the potential for a devastating explosion at a peroxide manufacturing plant in Crawford triggered by the spontaneous combustion of chemicals which after the failure of the refrigeration units are no longer being kept cold enough to prevent the reaction. A Trans History: Time Marches Forward And So Do We | Video Worth Watching
The Washington Post reports that General Mattis has put the military transgender ban on hold for the near future. The statement explained that he will first develop a study and implementation plan “as directed” by the president in a memorandum released Friday. After the panel makes its recommendations and he consults with the secretary of homeland security, he will provide his advice to Trump. In the meantime, policy regarding transgender service members will remain in place. And Mattis has been recorded exhorting troops to “hold the line until our country gets back to understanding and respecting each other and showing it.”
While this hot mess of misguided military policy is being sorted out, here is a short clip to help us remember the struggles it has taken to get this far. Through a collaborative video from the ACLU (yes! the ACLU does video!), Transparent producer and artist Zackary Drucker, Emmy-nominated actress Laverne Cox and the creative team of Molly Crabapple and Kim Boekbinder, they tell the story of trans history and resistance.
