McDonald’s Advice To Underpaid Employees: Break Food Into Pieces To Keep You Full

November 23, 2013 by Source

The “advice” was published on the “McResource” website, meant to give tips to fast-food workers.

By Alex Kane / Alternet

The latest friendly advice from McDonald’s to their low-wage workers includes tips on how to better handle stress–as well as how to fill yourself up better with dinner. The fast-food corporation instructs workers that breaking food “into pieces” will keep you full.

The advice was published on the “McResource” website, meant to give tips to fast-food workers. While you need to be a McDonald’s worker to log-in to the website, details of the advice have been publicized by the group Low Pay Is Not OK, a union-backed group seeking to organize low-wage workers at McDonald’s. The effort is part of the larger campaign to push for living wages, benefits and the right to organize among low-wage workers across a variety of industries.   [Read more…]

For the Love of Food: Spinach with Bacon and Pomegranate

November 17, 2013 by Source

By Melissa Phy / For the Love of Food

‘Tis the season for pomegranates! I used them in a salad a couple weeks ago and was trying to find a way to use up the other pomegranate I had in an equally delicious, but more creative, way.

My good friend (we’ll call him D) told me he made spinach with pomegranate seeds in it, and I deemed him the genius of our time. It adds a nice crunch and sweetness to an otherwise soft and bitter green. And, as we all know, bacon makes everything delicious.   [Read more…]

What’s Going On In the Old Proposed VFW Building?

November 13, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Earlier this week I received a notice from the ABC of a “notice of intention to engage in the sale of alcoholic beverages” in the same building that the VFW wanted to move into last year at 4705 Pt. Loma Ave. Before jumping to conclusions as to what was going to move in I decided to do some preliminary sleuthing and am pleased that I did.

Many of us remember when that building originally housed “Sea and Shore Market.” Years later I still miss the convenience of having a market that close to where I lived. It later was purchased by the owners of “Rancho’s Restaurant” – yes, the same Rancho’s that is on Sunset Cliffs. That became the second Rancho’s in the neighborhood and it was delightful to have it there. It usually had many patrons, and that may have been the downfall of the restaurant because due to of lack of parking space it eventually closed.

Now, Chad and Maja Cline want to open an establishment called “Kodiak” on that very same site. I talked to Chad today and asked him many questions re: the proposed restaurant.   [Read more…]

What to Do with Your Leftover Halloween Candy

November 5, 2013 by Judi Curry

If you are like me and purchased your Halloween candy at CostCo, and not wanting to run out in case your gremlins were going to trick you so you bought two GIANT bags, you probably are wondering what to do with the left-over candy.  After all, how many pieces of candy can YOU eat before you say “enough!”

I’ve got the answer for you! While listening to the news the other night I heard that a group of dentists were collecting the left-over candy to send to our troops overseas.  At first I started laughing, because who would expect a dentist to collect candy for any reason?

But after meeting Dr. Ana Simerlein and her office manager Kathi, I have some answers to pass on to you.   [Read more…]

Climate Impacts Poised to Decimate Human and Earth Systems, says Leaked IPCC Draft

November 3, 2013 by Source

Leaked draft of UN panel’s global review of future impacts from global warming predicts system break-downs across the board.
By Jon Queally / Common Dreams

A draft of a global scientific review on how human and natural systems are expected to respond to the growing threat of climate change has been leaked and its contents—though not wholly unexpected to those who have followed climate science news in recent years—are nonetheless both alarming and devastating.

Titled, Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, the leaked document is the draft version of the second installment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s latest review of the global scientific consensus on the global warming and climate change.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Supannee House of Thai

November 2, 2013 by Judi Curry

Supannee House of Thai  (Second time around)
2907 Shelter Island Drive
San Diego, Ca 92106

By Judi Curry

Since there was so many responses to an earlier review in the OBRag suggesting that I visit the restaurant for the second time, my friend Eric and I did just that last Monday at lunch time.

As was the case before, we were greeted with smiles and taken to a seat. Because it was late, the restaurant only had two other tables filled when we arrived, and one other couple came in after us. (They close at 3:00pm and reopen at 5:00pm for dinner.)

We were given the same fish menu that we were given at dinner, but both of us elected to have something off of the lunch menu.   [Read more…]

Child Labor Shouldn’t Haunt Halloween

October 31, 2013 by Source

Even if the kids in my neighborhood think my fair trade chocolate is a bit weird, at least I’m not handing out dental floss.

By Jill Richardson / OtherWords.org

I can’t bring myself to be the Grinch who stole Halloween. I just can’t, even though I write about healthy food. I even eat (mostly) healthy food.

Friends and colleagues expect me to have something to say about Halloween. But how can anyone condemn an innocent day of costumes and candy that brings joy to so many children?

As a kid, I was no health nut. I’ve always had a sweet tooth. My first word was “cookie.” But my parents did their best to restrict the sweets in our house. Halloween represented the one glorious day a year of unfettered access to gobs of candy.   [Read more…]

For the Love of Food: Tilapia with Bacon-Edamame Succotash and Pomegranate-Goat Cheese Salad

October 27, 2013 by Source

By Melissa Phy / For the Love of Food

Fall has finally presented itself in San Diego (high of 66? Brrr!) and pomegranates were a welcome addition to my kitchen this week. Unfortunately, they were just used to make a salad prettier. Bacon and edamame are the ingredients that really shine in this week’s dish.

Fish is a great protein, but it can leave something to be desired, especially if the fish is mild, like tilapia. About a year ago, I wanted to make fish, but wanted to pair bacon with it, to enhance flavor (read: salt factor) and because, really, who can argue with bacon on the plate?   [Read more…]

Jack-o-Lanterns Illuminate the Luxury in Our Lives

October 26, 2013 by Source

Did you ever consider yourself lucky because you can carve a pumpkin instead of eating it?

By Jill Richardson  / OtherWords

Every time I see a jack-o-lantern, I remember a conversation with my friend Kate Chumo. I met her in her home country of Kenya. We were talking about a favorite Kenyan food called uji, a fermented millet porridge.

“Do you know what we do with millet in the U.S.?” I asked. “We sell it as bird seed and feed it to birds.”

“That reminds me of what you do with pumpkins at Halloween,” she replied.

Has it ever occurred to you that we grow piles of pumpkins, which are a food, carve faces in them, and throw them away? We also produce mounds of millet, a nutritious grain that people can and do eat, and feed it to the birds.   [Read more…]

Commemorate Día de los Muertos throughout San Diego – Long Live the Dead!

October 24, 2013 by Brent E. Beltrán

Día de los Muertos Commemorated for Thousands of Years in the Americas

By Brent E. Beltrán

Los días de los muertos have been commemorated for thousands of years in the Americas. It started in what is now México and has spread throughout the United States and the world. Today these days are celebrated by people of many different colors and cultures.

November 1 is Día de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents) when deceased children are honored and November 2 is known as Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) where we pay tribute to adults who have passed away. These dates correspond with the Christian holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Soul’s Day.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: ‘BO-beau’ in Ocean Beach

October 19, 2013 by Judi Curry

BO-beau Kitchen + Bar
4996 W. Point Loma Ave.
Ocean Beach, CA 92107
619-224-2884

By Judi Curry

When I do a restaurant review, I try to stay within a certain price range , primarily because I live on a limited income. I had heard that the food at “BO-Beau” was very good, but was also told it was quite pricey. I am happy to say that the food WAS very good, and although more than I usually spend on a meal, was not that pricey compared to other restaurants of its quality.   [Read more…]

California potable reuse study gets a boost with SB 322

October 17, 2013 by Source

by George J Janczyn / GrokSurf’s San Diego

Many people will remember that in September 2010 Gov. Schwarzenegger signed into law SB 918 which required the State Department of Public Health to investigate the feasibility of developing uniform water recycling criteria for direct potable reuse, and to provide a final report on that investigation to the Legislature.

Locals may now be experiencing a feeling of déjà vu after reading U-T San Diego’s report about SB 322 signed by Governor Brown (Brown signs bill to boost SD ‘toilet-to-tap’ plans).
