#MeToo Reaches the White House; Trump Not Amused

December 12, 2017 by Doug Porter

It’s a sign, I hope: Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year for 2017 is feminism, selected because of the frequency of lookups at the once-upon-a-dictionary’s website.

On Monday, three of the nineteen women who have accused President Trump of sexual harassment and assault detailed their accounts of being groped, fondled and forcibly kissed at a news conference. (Depending on which news account you’ve read, the number of accusers varies from 13 to 19.)

Rachel Crooks, Jessica Leeds, and Samantha Holvey said they were speaking up again because of the current climate that has emboldened women to speak up about sexual misconduct.   [Read more…]

16 Women and Donald Trump – There’s a Pattern Here | Video Worth Watching

December 12, 2017 by Rich Kacmar

Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films have compiled the accounts of sixteen women who have experienced the sleazy side of Donald Trump. Collecting the stories and presenting them together demonstrates that there is pattern here.

During the presidential campaign these stories were part of the mix of campaign coverage, but faded from view as as other events crowded out the media spotlight. Now that other high profile sexual assault and harassment events such as the Harvey Weinstein scandal are in the news, three of the women—Jessica Leeds, Samantha Holvey and Rachel Crooks—have joined forces to bring public attention to this issue once again, and demand that Congress investigate the claims. The Hill reports that they have gotten the attention of the Democratic Women’s Working Group (DWWG). On Monday that group sent a letter signed by 59 women lawmakers to the House Oversight Committee Chair, Trey Gowdy, and the ranking member, Elijah Cummings, writing that “The American people deserve a full inquiry into the truth of these allegations.”   [Read more…]

Facebook Minions, Greedy Old Perverts, and the War on Women

December 5, 2017 by Doug Porter

There Is No #NotMe Here

Yesterday I learned to be careful about writing the lede and headline for a story tackling the subject of misogyny. Alex Zaragoza at City Beat wrote something about all men having a degree of complicity in sexism and its more extreme manifestations and was silenced for doing so.

It didn’t take long for Facebook’s content moderation team to remove the article from City Beat’s social media postings. It seems as though the headline “Dear Dudes, You’re All Trash” infringes on the rights of white men, who are considered a protected group on the platform, according to a six-month-old ProPublica investigation.   [Read more…]

Rebecca Solnit: Ending Sexual Harassment Means Changing Masculinity & Undermining Misogynist Culture | Video Worth Watching

November 24, 2017 by Staff

For some perspective on this Saturday’s “Me Too March” check out this recent interview of Rebecca Solnit by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez of Democracy Now!. Elaborating on her recent Literary Hub article “Let This Flood of Women’s Stories Never Cease” she reminds us that in the case of Abu Ghraib, where initially an attempt was made to characterize the problem as merely being a case of a few “bad apples”, it was eventually acknowledged that the issue was systemic, an issue of a toxic culture which sustained the behavior. Similarly, when discussing the current cases of sexual abuse and harassment coming to light it is dangerous to focus only on the behavior of some number of individual cases. We need to examine the system and the culture that supports that behavior. And for those who might suggest that these behaviors are unalterable genetic traits, there appears to be at least one instance demonstrating that it is indeed possible to create a culture which does not enhrine the alpha male heirarchical structure.

She also notes that the tenor of the times is reminiscent of earlier events which had energized public action on these issues, events such as Anita Hill’s revelations about Clarence Thomas in 1991, the Steubenville sexual assault and the New Delhi rape in 2012, and the Isla Vista mass murder near UC Santa Barbara in 2014. Let’s hope that recent events bear out that observation.   [Read more…]

San Diego Is No Different Than Sacramento or Washington When it Comes to Sexual Harassment

November 21, 2017 by Doug Porter

It seems as though 15 minutes can’t go by without a new revelation about some influential man being called out for sexual harassment. Sadly, the problem extends way beyond the rich, famous, and powerful, as a recent Huffington Post article about hotel housekeepers and casino workers explained. And then there’s the whole thing where women simply being in a public place are subject to a wide variety of what should be astonishing behavior, as documented recently in a photo essay at the Guardian.

Today’s column will take a spin around the media world to emphasize just how big a deal this overdue reckoning is, and offer up a few side thoughts along the way I felt were worth considering.

I’ll start local and work out from there.   [Read more…]

The Deadly Link Between Domestic Violence and Mass Shootings

November 15, 2017 by Source

By Sher Watts Spooner / Daily Kos

The fight for rational gun safety laws is frustrating. But the information that the perpetrator of the latest mass shooting also was guilty of domestic abuse—a conviction that should have kept him from buying a gun—seems to be opening some eyes.

Devin Patrick Kelley, who opened fire with an assault rifle to kill 26 people at a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, had been court-martialed for trying to strangle his wife and for fracturing his stepson’s skull. Kelley is just the latest in a series of mass shooters who also have committed domestic violence. Of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, nine were committed by domestic abusers.

According to research by Everytown for Gun Safety, which has analyzed all mass shootings since 2009, more than half of all mass shootings in the United States are related to domestic or family violence.   [Read more…]

Silencing Women in Politics – The Threat to Democracy From Gender-Based Online Harassment | Video Worth Watching

November 15, 2017 by Staff

An necessary element to having more women in elected office is the need to have women run for office. A critical step in making that happen is identifying and overcoming barriers that discourage women from running for office. One barrier is the disproportional amount of hateful and misogynistic personal online attacks. Here’s a video that sheds light on some non-partisan work being done on that front. More information on this project here.   [Read more…]

San Diego’s Democratic Party Leadership Should Heed #MeToo

October 23, 2017 by Doug Porter

Last weekend’s San Diego County Democratic Convention was a success on many levels. Candidates spoke, networks were built, and the party faithful came away full of hope for the future. The mechanics of the event went smoothly.

But…

There was just the nagging question of you-know-who, who stands accused of doing you-know-what. A handful of demonstrators held banners near the entrance to the California Center for the Arts, reminding attendees that this issue wasn’t going away anytime soon.

Ten thousand dollars bought a lot of silence at the Democratic Convention. With the unfolding scandals concerning sexual misconduct and harassment by powerful figures in entertainment, politics, and labor, you’d think the local party might have doubts about cashing a check from San Diego’s poster child for allegations of such conduct.   [Read more…]

Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

October 11, 2017 by Doug Porter

Harvey Weinstein. Donald Trump. Bill Cosby. Roger Ailes. Bill O’Reilly. Bill Clinton. Bob Filner. Mickey Kasparian.

These names are among those at the center of past and present reports and accusations of outrageous conduct involving male sexual aggression, harassment and/or violence against women. There are more names to be named and countless more victims.

Liberals do it. Progressives do it. Conservatives do it. Fascists do it. So why in hell are people attempting to put a partisan frame on misogynist misconduct?   [Read more…]

The Viral Song Calling Out Bollywood’s Sexism | Video Worth Watching

October 1, 2017 by Staff

Sexism isn’t limited to the U.S. For a glimpse at how some in the Bollywood industry are attempting to push back and call attention to the issues there, here’s an “All India Bakchod” number that highlights (or lowlights, maybe) stereotypical industry examples, all done in the quintessential Bollywood style.
