Making Sense of the CIA’s Story on Comrade Trump’s Campaign

December 12, 2016 by Doug Porter

Trump's Fog Machine

On Friday afternoon, the Washington Post dropped a bombshell of a story making the claim that disinformation/hacking efforts during the 2016 presidential campaign were aimed at supporting the candidacy of President-elect Donald Trump.

On Saturday, the New York Times took it a step further, reporting that the Russians had also hacked the Republicans’ data, but didn’t disclose it out of antipathy to the Clinton campaign.

At that point the domestic political universe as I know it collapsed. (Some) Republicans became overtly pro-Putin. (Some) Democrats called for a new Cold War. And the conspiracy-driven quadrant of the internet universe collapsed into a heap.   [Read more…]

The Humiliating Ruin of Mitt Romney

December 12, 2016 by Brett Warnke

By Brett Warnke

The emperor Tiberius famously retreated to Capri, engaging in every torment and excess imaginable. One of his favorites was tossing his foes off the cliffs onto the rocks while, down below, his soldiers would beat the fallen bodies with oars. Now, two thousand years later, it’s not a revolution or an emboldened left that mercilessly tossed the Bush and Clinton dynasties—along with Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, and now Mitt Romney off the headlands and onto the cliff rocks, it was Donald Trump.

Yes, Trump has spent the month assembling his new Wrecking Crew to tear apart 20th century’s progressive gains. And it now appears the smug ugly face of empire will be the hideous mask of Rex Tillerson, a corporate thug and climate change denier with no public service experience who led the most sinister business on earth, Exxon-Mobil. Worth $150 million personally, Tillerson helped filch Exxon $35 billion this year and could not more perfectly personify the Trump era to come.   [Read more…]

Trump Reneging on His Campaign Promises to Voters

November 30, 2016 by John Lawrence

Donald Trump

His Supporters Have Been Snookered!

In a 60 Minutes interview with Leslie Stahl, Trump back pedaled on his major campaign promises and a lot else. When asked what his sit-down with President Obama was like he replied, “I found him [President Obama] to be terrific. I found him to be– very smart and very nice. Great sense of humor, as much as you can have a sense of humor talking about tough subjects, but we were talking about some pretty tough subjects.” So no more questions about his legitimacy to be President? No more wondering whether he was born in Kenya? I guess not now that he, Trump, is a member of the club.

The interview went on:   [Read more…]

Anti-Trump Groups Strive for Unity

November 22, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

The organizers of Monday night’s Community Forum on the Role of Progressives in the Age of Trump weren’t expecting a packed house at the Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest.

Additional chairs were brought in. People were invited to sit on the floor and encouraged to share the eighty printed agendas once they became scarce.

While the overall numbers of people anxious to participate in doing something about the upcoming reign of reaction was impressive, the makeup of the crowd–mostly white, male, and of the baby boomer generation–was disappointing.   [Read more…]

Late Votes Dim Dems Hopes in County Supervisor Contest

November 21, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

With just under 200,000 mail-in and provisional ballots left to be counted, two contests thought to be victories for San Diego Democrats have flipped.

Incumbent Dave Roberts now trails Del Mar Mayor Kristin Gaspar by 296 votes in the race for District 3 County Supervisor, a reversal of fortunes with serious long-term implications for the local Democratic Party.

The latest vote counts for Mayor of Lemon Grove now show Raquel Vasquez beating George Gastil by 12 votes.

County Board of Education incumbent Rick Shea, on the other hand, is holding off a charter school lobby financed challenge by Mark Wyland, leading 100,331 to 98,883.   [Read more…]

The Trump White House: Pulpit for a Bully?

November 19, 2016 by Richard Riehl

Trump Bully

In her 1969 book, On Death and Dying, psychiatrist Elisabeth Kṻbler-Ross described five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In the wee hours of the morning on November 9, I entered Stage One.

When I had gone to bed the night before, I remained hopeful, but harbored a gnawing dread that Trump could actually win. That week’s Saturday Night Live skit of an election night party with true believer Democrats, captured how I felt.

Shortly after midnight I woke up to check the latest news on my iPad. I couldn’t believe what I saw. There had to be a terrible mistake. By sunrise my brief encounter with denial had turned to anger. If I were 30 years younger I would have joined protesters in the streets.   [Read more…]

500 San Diego Students Part of Nation Wide Anti-Trump Protests

November 17, 2016 by Frank Gormlie

Trump protest San Diego Nov. 16

Students From 3 Campuses Converge at Federal Building

On Wednesday, November 16th, upwards of 500 San Diego high school and college students staged walk-outs at their campuses in protests against the election of Donald Trump. They marched and blocked intersections, and then converged from their different schools in downtown San Diego.

Around 10 am, the first demonstration began near San Diego City College, and by 11:15 the crowd – mostly from San Diego High School and the College had swelled to 300 to 500 people, according to police and participant estimates, and they marched onto Park Avenue and other streets. Reportedly, the march was planned by students at City College with spreading including Wednesday morning via social media.

After taking over a few intersections, the demonstrators marched to the area of Horton Plaza and the federal building in downtown San Diego.   [Read more…]

Congressmen Darrell Issa and Duncan Duane Hunter: San Diego’s Sore Winners

November 17, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

In recent days the richest man in Congress has sent three fundraising appeals to supporters claiming that an election he’s likely won is being compromised by ‘liberals’ with ‘illegal votes.’

Representative Darrell Issa has apparently survived a challenge from Doug Applegate, though his margin of victory is much smaller than he’s used to. Recent reports from voter registrars in San Diego and Orange Counties indicate the incumbent he has a 2% (4000+ votes) lead. There are still ballots to be counted, but it’s rare for a lead of this size to change with late returns.

Issa, who was known as the House ‘Mini-Trump’ until he volunteered to advise Hillary Clinton late in the campaign when he thought she was winning, wants to gin up the fear. He’s inferring the disproven/fake news account currently being consumed on social media saying 3 million ‘illegals’ were allowed is a threat to his incumbency.   [Read more…]

Get Over It? Election Damage Will Not Be Forgotten

November 17, 2016 by Maria E. Garcia

You want me to get over it please tell me how.

How do I get over knowing little kids are being threatened and others kids are taught to hate?

How do I get over knowing the “all men are created equal” and Dr. King’s dream were lost in the politics of hate?

How do I get over knowing that the new Supreme Court will harm our country for the next 40 years?

How do I get over knowing the decisions they make will hurt my nieces and nephew long after I am gone and can’t protect them?   [Read more…]

Facebook’s Complicity in Trump’s New Order

November 15, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

In the 21st century world of social media as a source of news and information, the truth doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Tell a lie on Facebook and you’ll likely be rewarded with a large audience. Tell (for some) an unpleasant truth and the vigilantes of darkness will leverage their technical expertise to get an offending account expunged.

A made up story from a Macedonian site claiming Hillary Clinton had once said candidates like Donald Trump should run for office because they were honest and couldn’t be bought garnered more than twice the response (in a week) of the New York Times exclusive story (over a month period) revealing the GOP nominee declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns.

Diverse media outlets including the New York Times and the MIT Technology Review are examining how much those fake headlines influenced the election. New York Magazine cut to the chase with the headline “Donald Trump won because of Facebook.”   [Read more…]
