A Pregnant Sen. Tammy Duckworth Will Soon Encounter Lack of Senate Policy on Parental Accomodation | Video Worth Watching
Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), currently seven months pregnant and expected to deliver her second child in late April, will make history, being the first senator to give birth while in office. She gave birth to her first daughter, Abigail, while serving in the House of Representatives—the tenth representative to do so. By that time, the House had policies in place to deal with parental issues of House members.
Anna Palmer and Reena Flores of Politico interviewed Senator Duckworth for a recent episode of its Women Rule podcast. Senator Duckworth told Politico “I can’t technically take maternity leave because if I take maternity leave, then I won’t be allowed to sponsor legislation or vote during that time period.” She says that she’s working with her party’s leadership and her staff to figure out how she can still take important votes while she’s out.
There’s a more in-depth discussion of the issues facing a senator with child care needs in a Newsweek post by Marie Solis. “The lack of any sort of policy or accommodation for new mothers suggests that the U.S. Congress remains a bastion of patriarchy on its face,” Jennifer Lawless, the director of Women & Politics told Newsweek. Black History Month Event Honoring African American Law Enforcement Officers Caught Up in Local Politics
Here’s what we know: An event honoring past and present police officers planned for Saturday, February 24 at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation didn’t happen as scheduled.
The keynote speaker for the event was to be public defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright, whose candidacy for County District Attorney has provoked a strongly negative response from the law enforcement establishment.
City Council candidate Monica Montgomery and black community activists have announced plans to address the circumstances surrounding the Black History Month event at San Diego City Hall prior to a Council meeting that includes confirmation of a new Chief of Police. [Read more…]
An Email to NewsManager@FoxNews.com
Laura Ingraham’s put down of LeBron James on your network was so out of line and unnecessary and ridiculously insulting and dismissive. What does his grammar have to do with anything or his perceived “lack of education”? Why should he, in a country where he has the right to express himself, “Shut up and dribble”?
As a 79-year-old black man, it’s refreshing for me to see young black people like this great athlete speak out on what’s happening in the world — in this case, expressing his views on our president — who really “doesn’t give a f**k about the people” as he pointed out. [Read more…]
Keeping the Stupid in Politics, San Diego Style
The ‘stupid’ in San Diego politics is mighty intense for this time of year. It’s February, right? People can still file to run in the primaries for another two weeks.
Three of San Diego County’s keepers of the ‘same old, same old, flame’ are apparently running for ‘who can be the most outrageous and still get votes.’
These are people who expect to get elected or re-elected on June 5 because they think their name recognition is enough to win. Or because they ‘deserve’ the position. [Read more…]
Survey Says: Flipping the 49th Won’t Be Easy
A just-released poll, conducted February 12-15 by FM3 Research for Flip the 49th! Neighbors in Action has a cautionary tale for Democrats seeking to replace retiring Congressman Darrell Issa.
The good news is the Republicans’ brand is so tarnished that a generic Democrat could win over a generic Republican by 7 points or more.
The bad news is that the current line-up of Democratic candidates is likely to split primary voters in such a way that two Republicans will face each other in the general election. [Read more…]
Competition for Rep. Duncan Hunter’s Seat Gets Down and Dirty
Mayor Bill Wells of El Cajon has announced he’s running for Congressman Duncan Hunter’s (R-Not Indicted Yet) seat. I’m guessing all the worldwide publicity over the East County City’s decision to criminalize food sharing has convinced Wells he’s destined for higher office.
One of the early supporters he’s touting is Minnesota wack-a-doodle and former Congresswoman Michelle Bachman. Among her many accomplishments, besides bashing gays and Muslims, is the claim she made about the PPV vaccine causing mental retardation.
In a press conference held at the Ronald Reagan Community Center in El Cajon, Wells said he aims to bring “conservative, Republican values to Washington, D.C.” [Read more…]
Why Should I Be a Democrat? Part One: The 2018 State Convention Comes to San Diego
The California Democrats State Convention is slated for the San Diego Convention Center this coming weekend (February 23-25), so it seems like a good time to explore what’s going on with the party these days.
I know in my heart of hearts the two-party system is not likely to change in my lifetime. I know I’m drawn to what the Democratic party says it represents. But I also know its history of backroom dealings and the often-outrageous actions of the county party. Both are all-too-often more bound to money than principles. And right now I feel the principles of democracy itself are under attack.
Over the next few days, I’ll be posting about the party and its moving parts. There are clubs, county committees, and the statewide organization, all of whom have some degree of autonomy. It’s a large, mostly volunteer organization, and as such is vulnerable to human foibles, massive egos, and unbridled ambition. [Read more…]
How Republicans Stole the Second Amendment
By Rebecca Pilar Buckwalter Poza / Daily Kos
Republicans stole the Second Amendment. Over the course of 30 years, the right waged a war on political, legal, and academic fronts to redefine that amendment, contrary to history, text, and precedent, as creating an individual right to bear arms. Of course, none of those efforts, nor their aggregate effect, would have been enough to accomplish the right’s aims without a far-right ideologue on the Supreme Court, the late Justice Antonin Scalia, to codify them.
The right’s misappropriation of the Second Amendment ranks among the most stunning legal feats in U.S. history. [Read more…]
Has Rick Gates Had His ‘Queen for a Day’ Meeting With the Mueller Team? | Video Worth Watching
Barbara McQuade, former U.S. attorney discusses with Rachel Maddow the significance of reports that Rick Gates, former Trump campaign staffer, has had a “Queen for a Day” interview with the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team. If true, this would likely mean a third co-operating witness for the team.
(Plus bonus archival clip of actual “Queen for a Day” episode!) [Read more…]
End the NRA and Its Reign of Hate and Greed
The National Rifle Association needs to be put out of its misery. Despite all the talk about mental health, thoughts and prayers, a national conversation, and sensible gun laws, the solution to our gun madness is obvious.
The gunman in Parkland, Florida did not act alone as he carried out the 18th school shooting of 2108.
He was assisted by 52 Republican Senators, 298 Republican Representatives, and the NRA. Many, if not all, of those GOP legislators were elected or persuaded to vote the ‘right way’ with $140 million in help from this vile organization in the 2016 election cycle. [Read more…]
Supervisor Bill “Bah Humbug” Horn Bashes Evening Budget Hearings
People will have to take time off from work if they have an interest in local government this year. With most of the Board of Supervisors leaving office in the next couple of years due to term limits, they’ve decided daytime hearings are all the people need.
Supervisor Bill Horn’s recent statement that he was no longer willing to sit through evening hearings on the $5.79 billion County budget and the willingness of three other board members to go along with him says it all.
As reported by the Union-Tribune: “If you’re a concerned citizen … you could make the time to come down here to testify,” Supervisor Bill Horn said at a recent board meeting. “I’m willing to sit here for two days. … I don’t want to sit here at night.” [Read more…]
