An anti-Trump rally is being planned for this Saturday, November 19th, in Ocean Beach at noon.
Folks from the Green Store and the OB Rag met and mapped out the event that will be held at the foot of Newport Avenue.

California voters approved Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act, by a vote of 56% to 44%. Voters in Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada also approved legalization measures. Medical cannabis had a big night, too. Voters approved or expanded medical cannabis laws in Florida, North Dakota, Arkansas and Montana.
Proposition 64 legalizes the adult use, possession and cultivation of cannabis for non-medical purposes in California. It also creates a process for licensing and regulating adult use businesses, including cultivators, product manufacturers and retailers by 2018. [Read more…]
We were greeted by a decidedly Italian waitress – Valentina – who hails from Lake Como in Italy. She has lived in the U.S. for about a year-and-a-half and will be returning to Italy in a year or so. She presented us with a huge menu, including 32 different kinds of pizza’s as well as antipasto, salads, desserts, pastas as well as wines and beers.
The specials of the day change from day to day, but the categories remain the same. For example, the restaurant had a veal dish, filet mignon, seafood, pizza, risotto, ravioli, fettuccine, gnocchi, and chicken, just cooked differently on different days. [Read more…]
The shock and awe phase of the post-election period is winding down. Now the question ‘what next?’ is coming to the forefront of public consciousness.
Lots of people have ideas. Some of them are pipe dreams. Some of them are impractical. And some of them will evolve into what I can only hope is a wave of widespread, sustained, and effective resistance to the Trump administration’s policy proposals. (Friday’s column will focus on San Diego-oriented activities.)
For the moment what people are protesting is the very idea of Trump taking over the executive branch along with promises made on the campaign trail. It’s a murky mess to organize against because the man has no plan and his advisors are squabbling. [Read more…]

To my fellow students around the nation: now is not the time to blindly yell and scream without listening, nor to attack without thinking; now is the time to accept our mistakes as a society and engage in civil discourse. After the initial shock subsides, we must organize, we must present a focused discussion, a focused argument. Rather than complain about the results, we must resist.
There are many ways to resist. Blocking a freeway can make a statement; it can also get students run-over. Trump–along with the ridiculous ideologies associated with him–is far less concerned with the general welfare and compassion for all people than with the preservation of privilege. Trump is also unreasonable, irrational, and reactionary. We cannot combat this reactionary force by being reactionary; rather, it is our responsibility as citizens of the world to present thoughtful opposition to oppression, to engage in civil discourse, to educate each other with compassion, and to resist peacefully. It’s a reality that Donald Trump and all his transition team platoons cannot fathom, a reality that the mass corporate media disdains and a reality that drives Trump supporters crazy, but – there have been mass demonstrations and protests across the country every day and night since the election on Tuesday, November 8th, for 7 straight days.
Americans – mainly young people – have been in streets in all the major cities – including San Diego – and especially Los Angeles – Chicago, Oakland, New York City, Atlanta, Portland – and on college and high school campuses, in parks in small cities and towns.
Thousands. Tens of thousands. Across the country – on both coasts – in the heartland, in Trump territory – in all the urban metropolis. And it’s teenagers doing this, high school students, even middle-school students – many too young to have voted. [Read more…]

Efforts have emerged at UC-San Diego, Yale, other Ivy League schools, and elsewhere to limit the ability of local law enforcement and campus police to cooperate with federal Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE) officers. [Read more…]
In the 21st century world of social media as a source of news and information, the truth doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Tell a lie on Facebook and you’ll likely be rewarded with a large audience. Tell (for some) an unpleasant truth and the vigilantes of darkness will leverage their technical expertise to get an offending account expunged.
A made up story from a Macedonian site claiming Hillary Clinton had once said candidates like Donald Trump should run for office because they were honest and couldn’t be bought garnered more than twice the response (in a week) of the New York Times exclusive story (over a month period) revealing the GOP nominee declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns.
Diverse media outlets including the New York Times and the MIT Technology Review are examining how much those fake headlines influenced the election. New York Magazine cut to the chase with the headline “Donald Trump won because of Facebook.” [Read more…]

While the outlook for Obamacare under the new Republican regime isn’t entirely clear, you can bet women’s health care is not going to survive. The first and foremost casualty: getting prescription birth control without a copay. Long a target of the right (Hobby Lobby, anyone?) the contraception mandate is most definitely a target of the repealers. Planned Parenthood funding, which now comes primarily from Medicaid, will be just as big a target. Expect the Republicans to find a way to shut that down.
So what’s a woman of child-bearing age who doesn’t want a child to do? Give to Planned Parenthood—and get thee to your doctor for an IUD, like all the other women are doing. [Read more…]

First, the situation is urgent. We find ourselves at a critical juncture in world history. Earth’s ability to sustain life is collapsing even faster than scientists predicted. Additionally, forty years of “trickle down” economic policies, free trade agreements, and financial deregulation have fraudulently eliminated the gains and security of the productive class for the profit of the parasitic class. We have yet to recover from the financial disaster of 2008 and cannot withstand financial deregulation leading to another financial collapse.
Second, the weight of post-election analyses indicate that President-elect Trump’s election was attributable primarily to the dissatisfaction of the working class with political elites and insiders due to income stagnation and job loss. His election was a rejection of the status quo. [Read more…]
Like many older Americans (those of us who still watch tv), I sat in front of my tube Sunday night and watched Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes “interview” Trump and his clan.
Optimistic by nature, I found myself wanting to find the humanity in him – I found myself hoping he was “not that bad” in real life. I wanted him to be a normal person who just happens to have conservative principles rather than an unethical opportunist with no moral compass.
All of a sudden I realized I was trying to “normalize” Trump so I could settle down and go on with my status quo – living my happy “do-gooder” retired life. [Read more…]
