The new Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market opened Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from 3 – 7pm with 75 booths exhibiting the wares of 45 vendors to the delight of a crowd estimated by Brian Beevers, Market Manager, to be approximately 3,000 people! Among those attending were Lori Zapf, Republican, Member of San Diego City Council representing the Sixth District.
Vendors included local merchants of coffee, fruits, vegetables, baskets, nuts, berries, prepared foods, including BBQ, fresh drinks, flowers, clothing, fish, roasted corn, cupcakes, pasta, jams, object d’art, honey, plants, olives and bread. Two musicians played guitar and a percussion instrument.
At their jewelry booth, vendors Franki and Fella with their children, Tevita and London with nephew, Derrick, sold all handmade jewelry, including, cameos, owls and flowers, made by Fella from vintage jewelry pieces. While Fella sells his jewelry through a store in Ocean Beach, Franki said that they enjoyed selling his creations personally at the market so “we can talk to people face to face.”
Vendor David Klussman, the owner of Pizza Wagon, worked with his fiancé, Sharlene serving pizza from an oven that he bought on Craig’s List. David had intended to study to be a nurse until Brian offered him the opportunity to sell his pizza at Brian’s farmers’ markets. Currently, David is considering going back to school and looking forward to marrying Sharlene Saturday, June 23.
A son of farmers, Beevers left the website development field four years ago to eventually become the market manager of six area farmers’ markets. Beevers is looking for additional vendors, such as vendors of cheese, dipping sauces, more specialty produce and possibly meat, who can add further diversity to the Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market.
Catch the Morena District Certified Farmers’ Market every Tuesday from 3pm – 7pm on Morena Blvd. between Toys R Us and Petco.
I’d like to know: where is the Beevers’ family farm?
Dear Dorothy,
Thanks for asking… I grew up on an Almond and Walnut farm in Central California. We were not a very big operation and as a matter of fact we harvested everything by hand. We knocked the nuts off the trees with long poles then raked them into piles and putting them in buckets. Some of my earliest memories are of my Dad, Mom and me (younger sister was not born yet) harvesting walnuts. My family’s farm has since been replaced by pasture and a horse coral (although no horses… yet). My Dad does have a huge garden and my sister’s family has a house on the same property now and her kids are getting that same kind of up bringing; helping grandpa in the garden. As I grew up all I wanted was to live in the big city… and I now feel as though I was lucky that my life has come full circle. Currently, I am looking for a large plot of farm land near San Diego, so that I can continue to manage markets and produce food for others.
Brian,
Thanks for answering Dorothy Lee’s question so completely. We all wish you the best with the new Morena District Farmers’ Market and all of your personal endeavors.
Please keep in touch!
Christine
Hi, Dorothy,
Thanks for your comment.
What a great question! I didn’t ask Brian where his family farm is. Perhaps you can ask him yourself any Tuesday at the Morena District Farmer’s Market between 3pm and 7pm. He is very personable, so I’m sure he would be delighted to chat with you!
Best Wishes,
Christine
P.S. In the future, I’ll have to ask that question! : )
