Video by Media Arts Center San Diego’s Teen Producer’s Project
Intro by Brent E. Beltrán
With the battle looming over the future of Barrio Logan, due to Maritime Industry’s refusal to accept the Barrio Logan Community Plan update, I feel it is necessary to give voters of the city of San Diego a little history of Barrio Logan. In June eligible San Diego voters will go to the polls to vote on wether to approve the community plan or reject it.
Over the next few weeks I will post a video on Sundays that highlights the community of Barrio Logan and the beauty within San Diego’s most historic barrio.
Many thanks to the fine folks at Media Arts Center San Diego and the teens who created these amazing short documentaries. For more Teen Producers Project videos check out their YouTube channel.
This is a great idea, Brent.
And the doc is awesome. Can’t wait for Sundays, now!
What a terrific video! A great intro to Barrio Logan history. Thanks for posting this, and I’m looking forward to more.
I’m glad you all like. Though I have seen these videos many have not and I think putting them here on SDFP will give our readers a better understanding of Barrio Logan and our valuable history.
Ahhh… a beautiful doc. Thank you, Brent, for posting Espinosa Productions’ sweet cuenta of what is at the center of the struggle for the survival of a living, vibrant barrio. We have to believe that when San Diegenyos can see the truth they’ll do the right thing and reject the coming vote to impose control of the barrio by profiteers.
This is awesome! My neighbor tells me about when she worked in the tuna factories. Living in Logan all my life I have seen how much the neighborhood has changed. I miss the fresh smells from La Fornaca bakery… thanks for doing this!
Somebody should do something about all that graffiti. I’ll take maritime industry and progress over Mayan cartoons any day.
FYI- The painting under the bridge on-ramp is an art project with a high level of community support. Here’s a KPBS story.
I really wish I didn’t go to that story. I assumed it was paid for by a grant, but I would have been happier not have my suspicions affirmed.
Because pollution and the military industrial complex are so much better for Barrio Logan than expressions of the residents’ culture. Thank you for your insincerity and lack of compassion for my community. Knowing there are people like you in San Diego gives me even more reason to struggle for my fellow residents.
One man’s cultural expression is another man’s artifact. My compassion is for the community as a whole, instead of playing up to identity politics or one-issue platforms.
Paul– your comments reflect no “compassion for Barrio Logan as a whole”; in your first comment you sided with the maritime industry; in a subsequent comment you dismissed the art in Chicano Park as Mayan cartoons; then you actually came in again- doubling down on your ignorance about the art. Your identity politics are quite clear and so is your platform. You’re looking for love in all the wrong places.
