I’m Supposed to Feel Sorry for Phil Mickelson?

I think I must have arrived in “pity poor me” land without the benefit of a ticket. In channel surfing a few moments ago, I was appalled at all the people interviewed that are feeling sorry for Mr. Mickelson, a multi-millionaire that may have to leave California because he feels “targeted” by higher taxes being foisted on the 2% of Americans and he may have to change his life-style. Excuse me while I go puke. Is he saying that if he makes an endorsement for a product and is paid ten million dollars that he will only be able to keep $3.7 million? (I suspect that figure is incorrect but even so….how many people earn that amount of money in their life-time?)

According to Forbes, he is the 7th highest paid athlete in the world, with a salary topping $4.8 million dollars and winnings and endorsements totaling over $43 million.

What an obscene statement to make that he will have to change his life style. What? Will he have to start riding the bus?   [Read more…]

A Different View of San Diego’s State of the City Event

When I received my invitation to attend the “State of the City” address I was really jazzed. I had attended a fund raiser for Filner a few weeks before the election and enjoyed talking to him and having my picture taken with him. (I still think it is the best picture he has ever taken!) I met Bob Filner many years ago – many times – when I was a teacher, an administrator and an assistant professor. I was always impressed with him, even though at times I thought he was gruff.

When I called my publisher today and asked if any other reporters were covering the ceremony, I was told that Andy Cohen would be there. So I decided that since Andy was such a great reporter I would have to go about my article differently than planned. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ernie McCray in the audience and found that Andy had driven with Brittany, another reporter. That really meant that I could not approach my article as a “reporters report.”   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: The Beach House in Cardiff

One of the benefits of “on-line dating” is that you do not want to invite your “date” to your home so you meet at a coffee shop, or a restaurant, or someplace that is out in the open. Today, I elected to meet Richard at the Beach House” restaurant in Cardiff for lunch because he lives in San Clemente and it seemed like a good “half-way” place to meet.

The restaurant is on the beach just foot-steps from the Cardiff State Beach. There is outside as well as inside seating, and we elected to eat inside at a window seat because it was windy and cool outside. Although not the first ones there at 11:30am, there were only 2 other tables occupied – one outside and one inside. As it got later, there were more diners but never more than 8 tables filled at one time.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: CAFÉ NORDSTROM Fashion Valley

As I advance in age, I try to stay away from expensive restaurants or restaurants where I feel I have to “dress up”. I have always felt that I could not shop at Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom’s because it was too expensive for me, and people would look askance at me wearing sandals and cutoffs.  Funny, because I have charge accounts at both stores, but do most of my shopping on line.

Joe, a friend that I have reviewed restaurants with before, called me and asked if I was interested in having lunch at Ponce’s Restaurant in Kensington. Mexican food is one of my favorites, so I agreed to meet him at the restaurant. It is very easy to get to – right off Highway 15 at Adams. We met at 11:45am. The timing was good, because even though we had a 10 minute wait for a booth, by noon people were in line waiting for a table.

There is a very extensive menu – beginning with appetizers ranging from $4.95-$7.95; soups and salads from $5 to $8.75; combinations where you can choose 2 items, plus beans and rice, start at $9.95 and for 3 items it is $11.95.   [Read more…]

The Holidays are the Hardest

Being a widow is difficult if the relationship between the two spouses was a good one. There are times that being a widow is harder than other times. Like now. The Holidays. Being a widow and having 12 grandchildren becomes quite expensive and for the first time in many years I am unable to gift my children as well as their children. Fortunately they understand that I can no longer give boxes of band aids with funny pictures on them to my youngest grandchildren. I don’t know when it happened but they have outgrown the “bandage years.” Now they want more expensive items – they won’t be getting those either – but it doesn’t stop the “wanting.” So not being able to give what I would like to give is a downer but livable.

A Restaurant Review – D.Z. Akins

I was born and raised in the “borscht belt” of Los Angeles. I graduated from Fairfax High School, just steps away from one of the more famous deli’s in the United States – Cantor’s -.  It is impossible to tell you how many times I ate at Cantor’s; and even now I frequently have them send me some of their raisin pumpernickel bread.

When we moved to San Diego in 1966, the only Jewish Deli around was “Ross-Sands”, located in the old Sav-On shopping center off of Rosecrans in Pt. Loma. When they closed, it left an emptiness of traditional deli’s for quite some time, even though one of the sons – Myron Ross – went to work at the deli at Fed Mart for a few years. (Interesting to note that Myron is now a musician, having played for George Gobel, Buddy Greco, Andrew Sisters, Kay Starr, and many Las Vegas type shows, Ben Blue Review, Frank Sinatra Jr., Frankie Laine, Earl Grant, Tommy Noonan, Jane Russell, Connie Francis, etc. He has lost most of his vision but still continues to play and draw crowds.)   [Read more…]

Do I Want to Talk to President Obama?

On October 26, I received an invitation to talk to President Obama online with many of his other supporters. At first I thought it was a joke, because my donations to his campaign were small – really small – but when I questioned the email I was told that he wanted to “talk” to his “grassroots” supporters and tell them how happy he is with the work we are doing. The Power Was Overwhelming

A new young couple moved into our neighborhood two years ago and over that time I have had conversations with them; worked with Heather and taught her to make jam; called on Mark to help with a few heavy things that needed to be done around the house; fed their dog treats when Buddy and I take walks together. I was thrilled when she called me and asked if I would like to go the “Women for Filner” fundraiser at the University Club on Wednesday, October 17th. Although there was a $100 donation, (which I could not make) I am not sure how Heather worked it so that I could attend, but attend I did, and had a great evening.

An Old Time Favorite: “Studio Diner”

Almost a year ago I purchased a special coupon for the STUDIO DINER and, since it was one of my favorite restaurants, decided to ask one of my favorite people – Joe – to go with me and use it before it expired. And we had a grand time, because we had to spend $35 to benefit by the $25 discount.

I am surprised at how many people do not know about the Studio Diner. To quote their own page, “Wrapped in chrome, the diner is a welcome roadside stop. And, fittingly, it’s set on the lot of a working movie and TV studio, Stu Segall Productions. (Remember “Silk Stalkings” and “Renegade”? Currently filming “Terriers”.)

Decorated with “behind-the-scenes” movie-making equipment and serving comfort food with an upscale vibe, Studio Diner is fun for the senses.   [Read more…]

Sex In San Diego: The Failure of Dating Websites

As I contemplate the composition of this article, I am struck by a couple of things: One, as of Sept. 21 I have been a widow for three years. Time goes by fast, even if you are not having fun. Secondly, I joined my first dating service in January. During that time I have met a total of 12 men, even though I contacted over 200. (That’s the truth. I have all of their names on a grid so that I didn’t contact them more than once.) For the most part, those I met were nice enough, but the spark I was looking for never materialized and, even though I renewed my subscriptions to three sites, I will not do so when they expire at the end of the month.

Robert Napoleon Steele III was born in Detroit (pronounced Deeeetroit) Michigan to an African American father and a Caucasian mother. His early home life was normal, although he experienced some bullying by other kids because of his mixed heritage.

When he was seven his parents divorced and he moved with his mother and sister to Maryland. By the age of ten, Napoleon was a handful and his mother sent him to live with his father. His father enrolled Napoleon in various boarding schools and programs for unruly kids until he eventually graduated high school.

Napoleon’s first job was running the concessions at the National Aerospace Museum in Washington DC. At 19, his life took a downward spiral and he became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He moved around the country, and ended up in Reno, Nevada, hooked on drugs and homeless. After years of this lifestyle, Napoleon was tired – tired of drugs, tired of sleeping in alleys, tired of people looking past him not at him, tired of disappointing his family and himself.
