Ayn Rand – How is She Still a Thing? | Video Worth Watching

July 17, 2017 by Staff

Much of the discussion regarding recent efforts in Congress to pass the latest tax cut, er, I mean health care legislation, <sarcasm> for some reason </sarcasm> puts me in mind of the late Ayn Rand. As I’m also a big fan of the “Last Week Tonight” show, I now draw upon them to help me convey my exasperation and incredulity that somehow she is still a thing.   [Read more…]

Video Worth Watching | Summertime – Miles Davis & Gil Evans (2 takes)

July 16, 2017 by Staff

The weather this weekend is what set the tone for me. There was something about the mix of humidity and heat that just rippled out summertime. And to double your pleasure of the sultry delivery of that mood by Miles Davis & Gil Evans here are two takes from the same August 4th, 1958 recording session.

And while there may not be any motion to watch in this video, the creator did add a subtly changing visual element.   [Read more…]

Video Worth Watching – In Honor of Bastille Day

July 14, 2017 by Staff

Bastille Day is a French national holiday, celebrated on the 14th of July. It commemorates the anniversary of the storming of the fortress-prison in 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération, celebrating the unity of the French people in 1790.

Prisoners in the Bastille were held on the basis lettres de cachet, arbitrary royal indictments that could not be appealed and did not indicate the reason for the imprisonment.    [Read more…]

Video Worth Watching – Is It Legal to Video the Police?

July 13, 2017 by Staff

Today’s video should be of interest for anyone wondering about the legality of making videos of police activity. A number of recent court case decisions have upheld the right of citizens to video and record events that take place in public settings. Video Worth Watching – Net Neutrality Day July 12

July 11, 2017 by Staff

Today’s video is aimed at reminding us the importance of the upcoming July 12 day of action to Save Net Neutrality. If it seems like we’ve been here before, we have. One of the highest priorities for the Trump administration is the undoing of the rules that were supposed to protect us all from predatory business practices.   [Read more…]

Photo Gallery: San Diegans March for Impeachment

July 3, 2017 by Staff

Briefly …

An estimated 1500 San Diegans rallied and marched in downtown San Diego today to impeach the president of the United States. The first rally began around 11am in front of the County Admin building. About 45 minutes into the event, the crowd moved off the site onto the streets for a march around the western edge of downtown.

At one point, the marchers halted at a construction site along Pacific Highway owned by big-wig Doug Manchester, former owner of the U-T and grand hotelier to protest his policies. He was recently nominated by Trump to some post.

This reporter stood on a corner and counted more than 1300 people as they marched down Pacific Highway onto Harbor Drive. But I didn’t include those left behind at the rally site and all the stragglers.   [Read more…]

Congressional Black Caucus Says No to Trump Photo Op

June 22, 2017 by Staff

With one senior aide telling Politico “No one wants to be a co-star on the reality show,” the Congressional Black Caucus rejected an invitation from the President Donald Trump to meet at the White House.

Members of the 49 member caucus were put off by the invitation signed by “the Honorable Omarosa Manigault,” noting the-reality-TV-star-turned-White-House-aide had in no way earned such a title.

The CBC’s letter in response to the invitation pointed out the failure of the administration on numerous occasions to respond to entreaties from the group and the policy proposals coming from the White House were, in fact, harmful to their interests.   [Read more…]

Downtown Protest Set in Response to Expected Trump Decision to Abandon Climate Agreement

June 1, 2017 by Staff

Climate

Grassroots climate advocacy group SanDiego350 is calling for people to protest President Trump’s widely expected decision to pull the U.S. out of the international Paris Climate Agreement.

A demonstration is set for 5:30-7pm today (Thursday, June 1) at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building (880 Front Street) in downtown San Diego.

Pulling out of the Paris Agreement, according to organizers, will set back global climate leadership and condemn Americans to increasingly devastating climate impacts, poorer health outcomes, and loss of jobs and prosperity – which affect the poor, communities of color, and Indigenous people first and worst.   [Read more…]

Kasparian Out, Protests Continue

May 9, 2017 by Staff

Mickey Kasparian Removed from San Diego Labor Council by AFL-CIO

By San Diego Free Press Staff

Protestors are calling for the removal of Mickey Kasparian from the labor movement and Democratic Party. Supporters of Sandy Naranjo, Isabel Vasquez and Anabel Arauz, who have filed discrimination, harassment and retaliation charges against Kasparian, will hold a demonstration today, Tuesday May 9, 9:30 am to 11 am, at a San Diego Working Families Council Press Conference. Attorney Dan Gilleon and plaintiff Anabel Arauz will be present to answer media questions.

On the heels of his removal from the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council by the AFL-CIO, Mickey Kasparian has pulled United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135, and other unions that side with him, out of the Labor Council to form a new labor coalition called the San Diego Working Families Council.   [Read more…]

San Diego Tax March: A Photo Gallery and Videos

April 15, 2017 by Staff

San Diego Tax March

The protest remained peaceful. Often passing cars honked in alliance. Many marchers thanked police officers along the route.

The march ended at the Civic Center at about noon. Two men stood by the Civic Center, one with a sign that read “Why is Diversity & Mass Immigration Only In White Nations?” the other holding his iPhone and filming.

A small handful of people gathered to ask questions, since the men seemed to want to provoke the crowd. Listen to this dialogue that shows the work protestors still have ahead:   [Read more…]
