Anti-Trump Protests Were Peaceful All Day, Until….

May 28, 2016 by Barbara Zaragoza

Unión del Barrio

Yesterday, Donald Trump visited San Diego’s Convention Center at 2pm and spoke for about an hour. Vendors outside sold Donald Trump souvenirs and supporters often wore red hats with the logo “Make America Great Again.”

From about 11am onward, anti-Trump protestors rallied within the Free Speech Zone, located across the street from the Convention Center next to the Trolley Station and across from the entrance to the Gaslamp District.   [Read more…]

Mr. Trump Gets Fired In San Diego

May 28, 2016 by Brett Warnke

By Brett Warnke

With their motorcycles stacked like dominoes beneath the shade of the bright art in Chicano Park, SDPD grimly lined the streets in absurd riot gear in an enormous overreaction to a brief, spirited and peaceful march held on Friday May 26.

Unión del Barrio planned the protest—“Donald Trump: Fuera de San Diego”—which drew over a 1,000 marchers who rallied in the park and walked to the city’s Convention Center. Five or six other groups planned similar rallies. In the merry crush, there were loud and sometimes obscene chants in Spanish and English as bullhorns, posters, and groups vied for a break in the din.   [Read more…]

We’ve Got to Get Out and Vote Folks!

May 27, 2016 by Ernie McCray

People lined up to enter building to vote

What’s up with us liberals? We’ve freaked out over a chair supposedly being thrown in protest of shenanigans involving voting in Nevada. And we’re beside ourselves that Hillary got booed and hissed by folks whom we say “aren’t really democrats.”

I don’t like all that but I’ve learned over the years that politics can get rather mean and we democrats are proving that based on how we’re treating each other just discussing matters I’ve just described: talking to each other in caps and exclamations, littered with a few vulgarities.

Shouldn’t we be celebrating a campaign that’s been marvelous if, for no other reason, because of the important questions that are being raised regarding and by two very passionate democratic candidates?

This is what a campaign is supposed to be about isn’t it, hashing out issues, challenging your opponent?   [Read more…]

“Friday Is Going to Be One Crazy Anti-Trump Day in San Diego”

May 24, 2016 by Frank Gormlie

Trump San Diego

It’s going to be literally one crazy, anti-Trump day in downtown San Diego on Friday, May 27th. So much is going on that it boggles the mind to try to imagine everything.

First, of course, Donald Trump is arriving at the San Diego Convention Center to speak to his throngs around 2pm. And coming out to see and hear him, of course, will be probably thousands of ticket-holders. There will be long lines of them snaking around the Convention Center – which undoubtedly will be off-limits to protesters. Except those protesters in line with tickets.

Second, there will be thousands of protesters coming out to demonstrate against Trump and all that he stands for.   [Read more…]

San Diego Mobilizes Against Trump – Due Here Friday, May 27

May 23, 2016 by Frank Gormlie

Trump San Diego

Four San Diego Networks or Groups Planning Protests

By Frank Gormlie

San Diego is mobilizing against Donald Trump’s appearance later this week when he stages a rally on Friday at the Convention Center.

At least four networks or groups are organizing protests outside the Trump rally. One of them has stated its intention of organizing something inside his event. One of the groups is mobilizing protesters from the LA area as well. And, of course, each network has their own facebook page.

The networks include:

  • Love trumps Hate Solidarity Network
  • Dump Trump San Diego
  • Smash Trump San Diego Anti-Trump Rally
  • Unión del Barrio Rally at Chicano Park

Sanders, Clinton and Trump, Oh My!

May 23, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

San Diego Becomes Ground Zero in Presidential Contests (For a Few Days, Anyway)

As May slides into June, enthusiasm about election contests big and small is sweeping San Diego. Hope, an elusive feeling in an era of pessimism, is in the air.

Democrats Senator Bernie Sanders and ex-President Bill Clinton both campaigned in the area. Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump is holding a rally at the Convention Center on Friday, prompting promises of protests from activists throughout the region.

Away from the bright lights and big crowds, campaigning for local offices has reached a fevered pitch. Democrats, environmentalists, and organized labor are providing volunteers, who are going door-to-door in City Council contests, backing up direct mail campaigns. Republicans are carpet bombing the city with money for TV ads, slick  (and often questionable) mailers and paid canvassers.   [Read more…]

UPDATED: Saturday 10:45 am

Several Protests Planned for May 27th Trump Rally

The Donald has scheduled an appearance at the San Diego Convention Center on Friday, May 27th at 2pm. Email invitations to sign up for tickets went out to supporters on Thursday afternoon and quickly made their way onto local social media.

Here’s what we know: At least two groups have stated intentions to protest in and outside the rally. Hundreds of people signed up on Facebook event pages to protest within hours of the word getting out. The San Diego Police Department and the County Sheriff conducted training exercises in preparation for Trump’s appearance outside Qualcomm stadium on Thursday.

Recent events featuring the presumptive GOP nominee in California have led to raucous protests in nearby areas. In recent weeks, Trump’s security team has seen some success in deterring disruptions inside venues where he is speaking, working closely with local law enforcement agencies to identify and turn away people at the points of entry.   [Read more…]

Bernie Sanders, Bill Clinton Making San Diego Stops

May 19, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

Will Hillary Be Burned in Effigy?

California as the setting for the final scene in the dramatic contests between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders got a boost yesterday as both campaigns scheduled events for this weekend in San Diego. Tensions between the two candidates’ supporters have risen in recent days as the primary season draws to a close.

Sanders supporters are planning rallies at Kimball Park in National City on Saturday and Rancho Buena Vista High School Stadium in Vista on Sunday. People will be admitted to Kimbal Park starting at 4:30pm, with candidate’s speech scheduled for 7pm. Attendees to the Vista event will be admitted from 11am, with Sanders taking the stage at 2pm.

Former President Bill Clinton will be appearing at a for a rally (time and location still TBA, but word is that it’s at Southwestern College) on Saturday morning and then at a private fundraiser at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe at 1:30 p.m.     [Read more…]

Progressive San Diego Voter Guide for June 2016 Primary

May 18, 2016 by Doug Porter

Over the past few months the San Diego Free Press has reported on the candidates and causes central to the June 2016 primary elections. We have combined our research and analyses with information from public sources to create a progressive voter guide for electoral contests appearing on ballots in the San Diego region.

This guide includes links to candidate websites, symbols indicating endorsements and a short overview of contests, along with links to our reporting.

We take elections seriously around here. Our views are informed by years of activism for causes big and small. Founded in 2012, as an all-volunteer, non-commercial website promoting progressive views and grassroots news, the San Diego Free Press draws upon the legacy of the alternative press in advocating for economic justice, and against the social constraints limiting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all people.   [Read more…]

Local San Diego Anti-Trump Emergency Response Network Forms

May 18, 2016 by Frank Gormlie

Love trumps hate

The “Love Trumps Hate Solidarity Network” Commits to Counter-Protest at Trump’s San Diego Rally

Frank Gormlie / OB Rag

Two-dozen San Diegans met at the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest last night, May 16th, and formed the skeleton of a local anti-Trump emergency response network.

So, once it’s announced that the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee is coming to town, a coalition has already began organizing a counter-protest. The same if Trump waits to visit San Diego until after he is nominated, San Diegans are getting ready now.   [Read more…]

Trump Quietly Hires a Hardcore Anti-Abortion Crusader, Christian Right Delivers Heavy Applause

May 18, 2016 by Source

Donald Trump

In play for right-wing votes, Trump hires a champion of Christian conservatism

By Elizabeth Preza / AlterNet

As the realization dawns on social conservatives that Donald Trump will be crowned the Republican nominee at the Grand Old Party’s convention in July, the reality TV star-turned-politician is making a play for hardline right-wingers, hiring staunch conservative John Mashburn as his campaign’s policy director.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the prominent antichoice organization Susan B. Anthony List, heralded the move as an “excellent hire, especially for the pro-life movement and our legislative priorities.”   [Read more…]
