Things Moving Fast Dept: With the firing of racist elf and A.G. Jeff Sessions – and his alarming replacement by Trump’s “Roy Cohn” – it’s admittedly hard to keep up with the Constitutional crises hovering on our fraught horizon, but key amidst the unraveling was the spectacle of our babbling, vengeful tinpot wannabe berating and abusing reporters at his hallucinatory press conference.

Diane Ravitch opened the fifth Network for Public Education (NPE) conference stating, “We are the resistance and we are winning!” She noted that “reformers” were envious of our domination of social media. When they hired mercenaries to staff their own multi-million dollar web-publications to counter us; they failed. We still dominate social media.

The 2018 midterms were historic for women candidates. A total of 273 candidates were on the ballot, representing both parties. But even with this influx of women, they’re still way underrepresented in the US government. And that underrepresentation has very real policy consequences.
Less than twenty four hours after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives, President Trump went off the deep end.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was fired. the only thing surprising about that move was the swiftness wityh which it occurred. Sessions’ chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, is in as acting Attorney General, and has already removed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein from overseeing the investigation into Russian activities in the United States. As always, elections are a mixed bag. I’m not sure if we got what we need nationally, but the are local victories to be savored.
Before El Trumpo sends the nation into chaos once again, take time to savor these defeats of local deplorables..
It’s the beginning of a sea change for local politics. Democrat Nathan Fletcher has been elected to the County Board of Supervisors with a nearly 2 to 1 win over Republican Bonnie Dumanis.
As the term limits for Supervisors kick in over the four years, the days of a the GOP –representing a minority of voters in the county– ruling the roost are drawing to a close
Given the county’s control of nearly all spending for social services in the region and the Supervisors lack of willingness to fund worthwhile projects, there can now be hope for our traditionally under-served residents.
He wasn’t on the ballot, but it was a bad night for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Two incumbent City Council members who he’d successfully worked with on issues lost to newcomers. And now Democrats have a veto-proof super-majority on the council.
The Soccer City initiative (Measure E) that emerged from back room negotiations involving the Mayor’s office went down hard, garnering less than 30% support.
District 2’s incumbent Republican Councilwoman Lorie Zapf lost by 10 points to Democrat Dr. Jen Campbell, despite being backed by several hundred thousand dollars in support from the Lincoln Club/Chamber of Commerce axis.

Last Monday I attended the beautiful community vigil at Congregation Beth Israel along with several of my co-volunteers in San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention (SD4GVP). The hateful slaughter of 11 Jews at Congregation Tree of Life in Pittsburgh a couple of days earlier was absolutely horrific, and we’re dedicated to eliminating this scourge from American life. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than having to attend vigils for murdered Americans, but it’s part of what we do.
You know what hurts too? Sitting at a vigil for innocent people slain by hate-filled gun violence and seeing four local leaders being given a role of prominence when their roles in combating gun violence are anything but prominent. [Read more…]

Election season is to San Diego Free Press is like Valentines Day is to florists. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, 2018 is looking to be a good-if-not-great election for progressives.
Since much of the next 24 hours will be like waiting for results of a biopsy, I’ve elected to skip the prognostication process share a few nuggets of info.
People who take comfort from voter turnout numbers have reason to be encouraged. Michael McDonald at the Elections Project says pre-election day votes will break the 40 million mark when all is said and done.
