Are You Ready to Win Some Progressive Activist Victories in 2018?

December 31, 2017 by Staff

Progressive Activist

Did you know the San Diego Free Press publishes the Progressive Activist Calendar on Fridays? Each week we comb through hundreds of press releases, Facebook events, and organizational listings to bring our readers a one-stop shop for activist actions of every progressive persuasion in the region.

We include ten days of demonstrations, educational opportunities, organizing meetings, get-out-the-vote efforts, and cultural events. You’ll be amazed at just how many progressive happenings are taking place in San Diego.

It’s a huge undertaking. Sometimes we end up posting over 50 events. Each week we make a point of ‘boosting’ those posts on Facebook. Twenty bucks or so puts this information on the radar for thousands of people.

Help us continue to increase awareness of activism in America’s Finest Tourist Plantation.

Do You Know All There Is to Know About Intellectual Property Law?

December 29, 2017 by Staff

money

Neither do we. We work hard every day to maintain a media platform for citizen journalists that’s sophisticated and professional and safe, but we couldn’t have gotten where we are without consulting a legal team that knows all there is to know about intellectual property — and specifically how to protect the San Diego Free Press and contributors alike for the long term.

Thankfully, your donations allow us to underwrite the cost of obtaining legal guidance, purchasing necessary educational materials, resolving issues if and when they arise, and developing a Terms and Conditions policy with everyone’s best interests in mind.

Where Do Thousands of Progressives Go for Ballot Information and Advice?

December 27, 2017 by Staff

If you guessed San Diego Free Press, you’re right. Since 2012 we’ve published progressive voter guides in advance of every major election. While they do include our endorsements –and we’re picky,– each voter guide includes links to all the candidates’ websites and handy emoji letting the reader know who else backs them. SDFP also provides analysis, links, and basic information about ballot measures along with information about whose money is supporting the choices voters are asked to make.

Tens of thousands of people rely on our research and advice in the weeks leading to elections. We’d like to expand our reach through social media promotions during 2018; in this time of Trump trauma getting educated voters to the polls is more important than ever. And we want our readers to have the information they need to select worthy candidates all the way down the ballot. After all, today’s school board member could be your next CongressCritter, or worse, they could be a tool for the education-industrial complex seeking to make tomorrow’s citizens into compliant followers of whatever garbage is being advertised.

Do You Value the Work of Volunteers Who Promote Progressive Issues?

December 23, 2017 by Staff

money

More than 60 volunteer citizen journalists in the region wrote about homelessness, spiraling rents, labor issues, police-community relations, the environment, mental health, city planning, and local politics from a progressive perspective this past year.

The San Diego Free Press is run by seven volunteer editorial board members — Annie Lane, Doug Porter, Patty Jones, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, Frank Gormlie and Rich Kacmar. They have directed this online platform seven days a week for five years. They have collectively provided outreach into the community, dealt with legal issues, become experts on WordPress and social media, and created a progressive media vision.

SDFP’s four (volunteer) daily editors — Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Rich Kacmar and Anna Daniels — do the day in and day out work of receiving, inputting, editing and publishing articles. This also includes responding to emails, requesting additional information from contributors when necessary, and finding images to go with articles (again, when necessary).

Support the San Diego Free Press volunteers with your donation today!

Has the San Diego Free Press Been Your Go-To Site for Grassroots News and Progressive Views These Past Five Years?

December 22, 2017 by Staff

Welcome to the San Diego Free Press 12 Days of Passing the Hat. We want to do even more in the coming year; getting out the word about the upcoming midterm elections, sharing stories of local activism, and doing our best to keep local officials honest.

Help us underwrite the cost of the technology that keeps the lights on seven days a week! This includes everything from server costs to the StatCounter tool we use, which helps us track what makes the big time and where we need to improve. It also allows us to promote certain articles so we can reach more of #TheResistance each and every day.

Censored 2016: Underreported Stories of the Year

December 26, 2016 by Jim Miller

Plutocracy

In my final column of 2015, I wrote about the most underreported story of the year according to Project Censored’s annual list: “2016 will be the year when half of the world’s wealth will be controlled by the top 1%.” After reporting the dismaying details of that story, I ended with the following analysis:

So putting this all together, we are just about to end a year where we learned that global plutocracy is becoming more and more firmly entrenched and that the beneficiaries of that very system are not just responsible for an immoral level of economic inequality and human suffering but also for speeding us toward an apocalyptic end to the climate crisis.

Why this news appeared as a blip on the radar screen rather than dominating the media landscape is no accident. When the same oligarchy that benefits from our rigged system own the corporations that run our mass media, it is not surprising that bad news for the vast majority of us is not worthy of occupying the heaven of the spectacle for more than a fleeting moment.

Laying the Groundwork of Groundwork Books

August 14, 2016 by At Large

Groundwork Books logo

By Groundwork Books Collective

At the open house at Groundwork Books during alumni weekend our classic sign got a new layer of paint. A photo was posted online and we learned that the logo was designed by Charyn Segal and Lincoln Cushing.

It was Lincoln Cushing humself* that shared that bit of knowledge. Lincoln, a political poster designer and archivist, was involved in the original Groundwork Books project starting back in 1973.

Wanting to learn more about the groundwork of Groundwork Books (see what I did there mhmm) I reached out to Lincoln and he was happy to share some details.   [Read more…]

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
