Progressive San Diego Activist Calendar – May 12-23, 2017

May 12, 2017 by Doug Porter

Progressive Activist

San Diego continues to be an activist powerhouse, with demonstrations, teach-ins and cultural events throughout the upcoming weeks. This past week’s actions in Coronado attracted national attention from the media and other activist organizations around the country.

In case you haven’t noticed, El Presidente is becoming a little more unhinged every day. I’m starting to think maybe the networks should just create a timeslot for his daily rants. Morning Meltdowns would be a good title, I think.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings   [Read more…]

Persistence Pays! Progressive Activist Calendar for San Diego: April 28 – May 13

April 28, 2017 by Doug Porter

Progressive Activist

The hard work and dedication of activists all over the United States continues to provide a ray of hope in this era of darkness.

There are two really big days– April 29 & May 1–in this calendar, and I’ve worked hard to provide as much detail as I could find about activities for the multiple events associated with the People’s Climate March and May Day.

There will be no calendar published next Friday (May 5), hence the bigger than usual window for this week’s posting.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activist Calendar April 21- May 1, 2017: 100 Days of Resisting

April 21, 2017 by Doug Porter

Activist Calendar

President Trump is lumbering towards the hundred day mark as I’m writing this, desperate to be seen as doing something, anything. The latest scheme is to try and horsetrade funding for the wall in return for not throwing a bunch of poor people’s healthcare away.

It won’t work, but not for lack of trying. Thanks to massive and ongoing resistance, the deal he’s offering is a non-starter for much of the Congress.

There are lots of local things to check out this week, and I urge you to think both globally and locally.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activism Calendar April 14 – 24, 2017

April 14, 2017 by Doug Porter

By Doug Porter

There are more than 135 cities with rallies and marches this weekend demanding that President Trump show us his taxes. Here in San Diego, we have marches in downtown and Escondido. The March for Science the following weekend has 425 sister marches worldwide. Earth Day is April 23 (It’s Earthfair in San Diego). And the People’s Climate March–again with sister marches around the world–is closing out the month on April 29. Plus there are more than three dozen opportunities in the coming week or so for people to get involved.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Activist Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.   [Read more…]

40+ Ways to Educate, Organize, and Take Action in San Diego

Donald Trump bragged to reporters on Air Force One, “I think we’ve had one of the most successful 13 weeks in the history of the presidency.” The fact he’d only been in office for 11 weeks never occurred to him.

Then El Presidente ordered 59 missiles fired at a Syrian airbase, believed to be the launching place for the thirteenth attack on civilians using poison gas. He let the Russians (who say their buddy Assad would never do such a thing) know in advance. He didn’t let Congress know, but apparently, that’s okay, because he’s not weak like Obama. The price of oil jumped 2% in trading (very good for a certain Euro-Asian economy), and the State Department announced there would be no substantive change in US policy toward Syria. Oh, and their refugees are still not good enough to be admitted to the United States.

The circus in Washington continues, and there are three ways to react: organize, educate, and agitate. April is shaping up to be the most activist month yet, with events large and small throughout the county.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activism Calendar for San Diego March 31 – April 10, 2017

March 31, 2017 by Doug Porter

Things are moving fast with the decaying orbit of the entity otherwise known as the Trump administration. Every week when I write this intro to the activism calendar, I wonder if this will be the week when the illegitimate presidency of #45 crashes and burns?

Having lived through the Watergate era, I have to remind myself how long it actually took for Nixon to fall from grace. Every revelation, every rumor, every press conference seemed like it would the one. And then it wasn’t. There is no addiction stronger than the quest for power, and the descent into despair takes a lot longer than any of us think it should.

The good news is that keeping the pressure up on Washington will bend the arc of justice in the right direction. The bad news is that we have a long way to go. So keep up the good work. And take care of yourself.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activist Calendar March 24 – April 4, 2017

March 24, 2017 by Doug Porter

Progressive Activist

The Trump administration’s agenda continues to run into a buzz saw powered by public opinion. Defeating these horrible schemes is, however, going to take an ongoing effort. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll win some, we’ll lose a few, and we need you to keep active.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Activist Calendar listings. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.   [Read more…]

Progressive Activist Calendar, March 17-28, 2017

March 17, 2017 by Doug Porter

The Randian nightmare, also known as the Trump administration continues to unfold. A budget plan presented by the White House this week is a boon for billionaires and kick in the teeth for the rest of us.

It should be clear by now we’re in for a long struggle. There are ongoing activities, organizations to support, and organizing to be done. AND, we should try to have a little fun along the way! Take a walk, have a talk, read a book, and turn off the internet from time-to-time.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Activist Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement.

Progressive Calendar for San Diego Activists, March 10 – 21, 2017

March 10, 2017 by Doug Porter

Wow. Here’s another calendar packed full of events for local activists. I’ve made some cosmetic changes this week, including icons to make events more recognizable.

So what will you do? Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings below. Following those listings are upcoming events of national importance, along with opportunities for organizational involvement and a few reading suggestions.

Get your event listed: I try to list the next 10 days or so of mostly non-commercial events I think our readers might find of interest. I source my material from social media listings and press releases.   [Read more…]

We’re Not Going Away! More Than Three Dozen Ways to Get Involved

Duncan Hunter’s on the Run! The Los Angeles Times ran a hilarious article about the San Diego Congress-Critter’s pathetic attempts to close down his offices in the face of ongoing protests. Also, Congressman Darrell Issa tried and failed to co-opt the local resistance this week.

Two hundred representatives are not even bothering to try and meet with constituents during the February break. But that hasn’t stopped people from picketing their offices and flooding their switchboards with calls demanding answers on immigration, health care, and a host of other issues. And it’s not going to stop anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Congresspersons Susan Davis and Scott Peters spoke before full houses this week, answering questions and seeing up close and personal the passion people are feeling these days. As Democrats, these representatives didn’t face crowds that were necessarily upset, but the message of resistance was just as strong.   [Read more…]

More than two dozen ways to get involved

Congress will be taking a break next week to listen to their constituents, except for the 200 Republican members of the House of Representatives who refuse contact with the public.

By contrast, in the first two months of 2015, Republicans held 222 in-person events.

Donald Trump is already campaigning for 2020, and as was true with his last launch event, people are being paid to be there.

So what can you do? There’s plenty of local activism to support. Check out this week’s Progressive Calendar listings   [Read more…]

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
