San Diegans Condemn Militarization of Barrio Logan by Mayor Faulconer and Chief Zimmerman

May 31, 2016 by At Large

Phalanx of San Diego police confront lone citizen on Harbor Drive

Community is urged to report incidents of police abuse, mistreatment, and arrests during Trump protests

By Alliance San Diego

For many years, San Diego community leaders have engaged with city leaders and law-enforcement officials to dialogue about public actions involving protected First Amendment speech. This had been done in order to ensure that the right to peacefully assemble occurs without the encumbrance of disproportionate and unnecessary force. But on Friday May 27, that right was undermined by law enforcement and city leaders, which turned Barrio Logan into a militarized zone, threatening residents and scaring families.

Press conference scheduled today, May 31 at 11:00 am in Barrio Logan. Details inside.   [Read more…]

Your Right to Protest In San Diego

May 27, 2016 by Source

Free Speech Rights, Free Speech Zones, Interactions with Police, Resources and MORE

YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT-PROTECTED RIGHTS

By the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties

The right to join with fellow citizens in protest or peaceful assembly is critical to a functioning democracy. But it is also unfortunately true that governments and police can violate this right—through the use of mass arrests, illegal use of force, criminalization of protest, and other means intended to thwart free public expression.

Standing up for your right to protest can be challenging, especially when demonstrations are met with confusion, excessive force, or violence. But knowing your rights is the most powerful tool you have against the stifling of your voice.   [Read more…]

‘Love Trumps Hate’ Rally Outside Trump Speech at San Diego Convention Center

May 26, 2016 by At Large

Noon to 4 rally sponsored by the ‘Love trumps Hate Solidarity Network’

By Martin Eder / Activist San Diego

The Friday May 27 rally outside the Trump speech will be part of a mobilization of several thousand. This noon-time rally at 5th and Harbor Drive, across from the San Diego Convention Center will focus on the theme “Tear Down Walls Between Peoples: Unity/Unidad and Solidarity”.

The Love trumps Hate Solidarity Network is committed to a non-violent rally. We are not coming to yell or engage Trump’s supporters. Our focus is on Trump’s incendiary words and actions.

In the call to action the Solidarity Network states “Come participate in democracy in action, 1st amendment in action”. Our rally is a visible response to a real threat.   [Read more…]

Bob Dylan Turns 75: May Your Song Always Be Sung

May 26, 2016 by Source

Dylan in whiteface with cup and bucket during 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour

By Abby Zimet / CommonDreams

Bobby Zimmerman of Hibbing, Minnesota turned 75 on Tuesday. Unreal. America’s great troubadour is still on the road, heading for another joint – though, for those around in the bad old days, nothing can beat 1975’s dazzling Rolling Thunder Revue – and this week Bob Dylan also released his 37th studio album, “Fallen Angels.”   [Read more…]

“Friday Is Going to Be One Crazy Anti-Trump Day in San Diego”

May 24, 2016 by Frank Gormlie

Trump San Diego

It’s going to be literally one crazy, anti-Trump day in downtown San Diego on Friday, May 27th. So much is going on that it boggles the mind to try to imagine everything.

First, of course, Donald Trump is arriving at the San Diego Convention Center to speak to his throngs around 2pm. And coming out to see and hear him, of course, will be probably thousands of ticket-holders. There will be long lines of them snaking around the Convention Center – which undoubtedly will be off-limits to protesters. Except those protesters in line with tickets.

Second, there will be thousands of protesters coming out to demonstrate against Trump and all that he stands for.   [Read more…]

Feminism is Alive and Well in San Diego . . . but the Fight is Getting Harder

May 10, 2016 by Anne Haule

On Mother’s Day, a group of about 30 women (and a couple men), some of the women mothers and some not, gathered at the Lyceum Theater to celebrate with champagne and listen to a panel of experts discuss “The (True) History of Feminism in San Diego”. The panel, assembled by the Women’s Museum of California, preceded a viewing of “Rapture, Blister, Burn”, a contemporary Pulitzer nominated play by Gina Gionfriddo – a funny and poignant feminist play running for another week that I highly recommend.

The panel, consisting of a politician, a research psychologist, both a professor and a masters student in women’s studies was moderated by Ashley Gardner, the Executive Director of the Women’s Museum.   [Read more…]

San Diego Homeless Advocates Rock the City Council

April 28, 2016 by Jeeni Criscenzo

Anatomy of a successful press event

Some days I marvel at the value of the network of good people that has grown in our community—people involved in so many different areas, all so critical, who come together to support one another in our various efforts. Without that, we could have never pulled off the very successful action on Tuesday April 19 in protest of the City’s reprehensible decision to fill an underpass in Sherman Heights where homeless people take shelter with rocks.

This was a case where all systems were running at peak performance. For the sake of all of those younger people who are just starting to dip their toes in the art of community organizing, here’s how it goes when you have a cadre of like-minded friends to call upon for a cause. (I’m using actual first names here because all of those people deserve the kudos.) In the end, that’s more valuable than a pile of money and hired hands.   [Read more…]

Will it be UT-Today, Tommorrow? Gannett Makes Offer for Tribune Papers

April 25, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

If you don’t like what you’ve been seeing in the San Diego Union-Tribune lately, wait a couple of months. Seriously. The newspaper of record in America’s Finest City may soon have new owners.

Newspaper publisher Gannett has gone public with an offer to buy Tribune Publishing after getting a less-than-enthusiastic response to a private offer made on April 12th.

The proposed deal would fold the Tribune’s nine daily newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune into a media monolith publishing USA Today and newspapers in 107 other cities.   [Read more…]

Now They’re Coming After the Librarians

April 23, 2016 by Source

Engraving of Washington in flames, 1814

By looty / Daily Kos

The British burned down the first Library of Congress in 1814. Two hundred years later and some Republicans seem to want to do it again.

Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) is, as I suspect most people know, a Teahadist moron. But it takes a special kind of moron to piss off librarians. That’s exactly what she did this morning, with the announcement that she would introduce a bill in Congress, mandating that,

“The Librarian of Congress shall continue to use the terms ‘Alien’ and ‘Illegal aliens’ in the Library of Congress Subject Headings in the same manner as they were in effect during 2015.”

A New Era of Feminism: Women Continue to Inspire Women

April 9, 2016 by At Large

By Leah Schroeder

March was a month for deep reflection for a lot of us women on the question, “how far have we come?” A plethora of articles and books are available that discuss this question, and dissect the variety ways in which women are still subjugated in all societies. There are so many controversial, frustrating, and generally negative circumstances I could write or rant about.

It’s easy to become angry at how “The System” (patriarchy, misogyny, menstrual cycles, racism, you catch my drift) has been set up against marginalized groups for millennia. Sometimes, this anger is consuming. For example, when reading about how an African American woman was (allegedly) gang-raped by men on the lacrosse team at a prestigious, majority white university (cite). Among other things, gender-based violence occurs all over the world, a lot more often than many people think.

The historical and deeply systematic subjugation and de-humanization of women that still prevails in many ways today can really get you down. However, there’s also a growing sensation of power that comes with education and the knowledge gained from women in the past and present.   [Read more…]

International Women’s Day Celebration in Pictures

March 31, 2016 by At Large

Los Angeles site of March 5 rally and march

By Bree Davis

International Women’s Day is a global celebration to recognize the women of the world. Af3irm, a leading political feminist organization that has many chapters throughout of California, is the organization that put the march together in downtown Los Angeles this year. The focus of the March 5 celebration was different issues among transnational women of color.

The rally started out strategically in front of the Downtown L.A. Police Department with speakers and musicians. Supporters of the #blacklivesmatter movement were there and even went as far as to call out the LAPD and their racist police officers and how racial profiling needs to end. Other people came to talk and support the trans+ community, Muslim community, Asian community, and reproductive justice, along with other issues that face women of color.   [Read more…]

Readers Write : Media Reduces Sanders Supporters to 50 Shades of White

March 30, 2016 by Bob Dorn

Hand and arm stretched out over a white background

An Open Letter to the New York Times

Amy Chozick,

I’ve been stewing over your New York Times story on Bernie Sanders’ sweep of Alaska, Hawaii and Washington states ever since I read IN ITS SECOND SENTENCE that those victories were a consequence of “the largely white and liberal electorate of the Pacific Northwest.” Did you really mean to write that?   [Read more…]

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
