Three Cases Of Sexual Misconduct At IB’s Mar Vista High School …

April 22, 2016 by Barbara Zaragoza

… California’s Longest Drug Smuggling Tunnel Is Found In Otay Mesa, and a Portable Shower Program For San Diego’s Homeless

Mar Vista High School had not one, not two, but three reported incidents of sexual relations with underage females by a walk-on assistant football coach, an ROTC instructor and a tutor. Mar Vista ranks No. 5 out of 10 at greatschools.org and has only 37 percent of graduates who are eligible for UC/CSU. It’s also known as one of the schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) with a larger attendance of low-income students.

Are these students–whose parents rely heavily on staff and the district to safeguard their children while they put in hours at one or even two jobs– especially vulnerable and therefore targeted by unseemly types?

Disturbingly, in the review comments section of great schools.org, an anonymous parent posted on Sept. 1, 2013, “Terrible school. Students date some of the teachers right after graduation.”   [Read more…]

April 22, 2016 by Source

By Miriam Raftery / East County Magazine

California women and girls are spending $41 billion more than men and boys for similar products that everyone needs, according to the Senate Judiciary Committee analysis of Senate Bill 899, the “Equal Gender Pricing Bill” authored by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego). Yet they earn $39 billion less than men each year.

What We Lost When We Lost Prince

April 22, 2016 by Source

Prince messed with rock’s formula more than any other artist.

By Kali Holloway / AlterNet

Last year, Prince presented the award for Album of the Year at the Grammys. “Albums still matter,” he said. “Like books and black lives, albums still matter.”

That moment maybe sums up why Prince Rogers Nelson was so great, and why his death—which despite confirmation still seems unbelievable—is so devastating for so many people. With a few off-the-cuff words, the always unpredictable Prince outshined at least half of the artists who would take the stage that night, even without his guitar. With his guitar, he could pretty much blow them all away.   [Read more…]

The Other Big 2016 California Primary: U.S. Senate

April 21, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

California’s primary counts this year. While media coverage of presidential candidates wooing voters in the Golden State is steadily increasing, another primary contest with national implications is flying under the radar.

Sen. Barbara Boxer’s retirement creates the first open U.S. Senate seat in California in more than two decades. Based on the activity level of Sen. Dianne Feinstein recently, it could be a while until the next opportunity presents itself.   [Read more…]

Keeping The Dream Alive: Biliteracy Scholarship Fundraiser in Memory of Beatrice Gonzales

April 21, 2016 by At Large

By Rosalia Salinas

Beatrice Gonzales’ dream of quality education for bilingual students inspired several generations of teachers. First as a second grade teacher in South Bay, then as district bilingual coordinator and later as Director of the Bilingual Teacher Training Program at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Bea’s work benefited, supported, and inspired thousands of educators in the area and throughout the state.

She was motivated by a profound dissatisfaction with the status quo. As a teacher she knew that if the quality of teaching was good, then students were better served if they had access to two languages.   [Read more…]

We Will Show Trump the Beautiful Door to Get-The-Hell-Out-Of-San-Diego

April 21, 2016 by Staff

By San Diego Free Press and OB Rag Editors

We anticipate that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will visit San Diego during the California presidential primary campaign.

We at the San Diego Free Press and OB Rag will join with other San Diegans during his campaign stops in our city in expressing our adamant opposition to the racist, xenophobic and misogynist policies espoused by Trump.   [Read more…]

Treasury Will Put a Woman On the $20, But the New Bill Won’t Appear Until 2030 … Or Later

April 21, 2016 by Source

Harriet Tubman on a $20 bill

By Meteor Blades / Daily Kos

An unnamed senior federal official told CNN Saturday that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will announce this week sometime that Alexander Hamilton will remain on a newly designed $10 bill but a woman will replace Andrew Jackson on the $20. Just don’t expect to see bills with whomever that replacement is pouring out of the nation’s ATMs anytime soon.

Newly designed $5 and $10 bills will show up first. Because of the lengthy design and anti-counterfeiting measures, if Hillary Clinton becomes president and serves two terms, she’ll be long out of office by the time a woman appears on the $20—in 2030 at the earliest, according to Treasury officials …   [Read more…]

Remembering the Racism of Pot Prohibition, Celebrating 420 Day

April 20, 2016 by Doug Porter

News roundup logo

So, today is national stoner day. You know, 4/20, dude. Californians will likely be voting to Legalize It in November, though it’s not certain at this point what language will be approved.

Legalizing pot won’t free it from its long history of association with racism, and we need to talk about it. And I’ll share some of the fun 420 coverage from around the state.

Harry Anslinger, made commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics after alcohol prohibition failed, was one of the driving forces behind pot prohibition. He pushed it for explicitly racist reasons, saying, “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men,” and complaining about “its effect on the degenerate races.”   [Read more…]

A Chat with Singer Janis Ian

April 20, 2016 by Anne Haule

Appearing May 22nd at the Balboa Theater at a Benefit for the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation Lesbian Health Initiative

By Anne M. Haule

I had the most delightful chat with Janis Ian this morning.  Her warmth immediately calmed my nerves (in this my first celebrity interview). I felt as if I were chatting with a friend. She is upbeat, articulate, humorous and amazingly candid. She was generous with her time and forthright with her comments. She is a self-proclaimed optimist with a sparkle in her voice.

We began by talking about her 50+ year career – and what a versatile career it has been and continues to be. Janis has received 38 awards and honors for her music, her writing, her audiobooks, and her social activism.   [Read more…]

Voting Problems Plague High-Stakes Primary Day in New York

April 20, 2016 by Source

Some precincts opened two hours later than they were supposed to, while some would-be voters’ names couldn’t be found on registration lists

By Deirdre Fulton / CommonDreams

Amid charges of voting machine mishaps and names purged from voter rolls, New Yorkers cast their ballots Tuesday in high-stakes Democratic and Republican primaries—those who were able to, at least.

The results in New York’s closed primary could define the rest of the race, putting the Empire State in the rare campaign spotlight.   [Read more…]
