Beats in Peru: A Daily Travelogue – Part V

June 9, 2013 by Source

By Mikey Beats

San Diego DJ Mikey Beats, and his nurse wife Jenny, decided to take a vacation to Machu Picchu, Peru. For the next few days San Diego Free Press will publish their daily adventures. Read parts I & II, part III and parts IV & IV.5.

Thursday 6/6/13 Day 5

My alarm went off at 6:30am and I was still awake. Jenny and I packed up our things, headed down to the lobby to catch our cab, got to the bus station and headed towards the train station.

My body was at war with itself and I was held captive. At every turn, bump and stop I writhed in pain. My mind was set though, I was determined to make it to my destination.

The bus ride went through the hills of Cuzco that looked similar to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Most buildings were half built and littered with old insignificant signage. Once or twice a block there would be a break in the buildings and we could see the houses slowly start to disappear on the opposite hill from us and turn into bare hillside.   [Read more…]

Several years ago, just after my husband died, I began to going to physical therapy for two torn rotator cuffs that developed because I had to lift Bob in and out of the wheelchair. On my first visit I met a delightful receptionist – Bettye – that was enrolled in a nursing program at a nearby college. As I continued to go for therapy several times a week, a friendship developed and she told me that she had decided to drop the nursing program and become an Occupational Therapist instead. I told her that when she graduated I would take her to lunch.   [Read more…]

Tío Emilio and the Secrets of the Ancestors: Chapter 3 — The Visitor

June 8, 2013 by Richard Juarez

“Mama,” I said quietly, “How come no one ever talks about this Tío Emilio?”

She gave me her stern look. I could tell she didn’t want to talk about him. But I didn’t care. I wanted to know more about this new tío that no one talked about. So I just stood there, waiting.

By Richard Juarez

“Vincent,” my mother yelled, “Did you finish putting the wax on the floors?”

About the only time she talked to me lately was to yell about another chore to do around the house. Which was better than a few weeks before, when she was yelling at me all the time for the great Coke robbery, and for everything else she could remember I’d done lately.   [Read more…]

Wednesday 6/5/13

As I awoke to the sounds of droplets coming from the roof onto the street outside my first reaction was, “I thought this was the dry season.”

Eric from “Adventures by Eric” had agreed to send someone to meet me at 8am in the reception area to give the down payment on our ATV Adventure Tour that would last 4 hours. Jenny and I had done one of these in the Yucatan for a tour of the cenotes a few years prior and we had a blast. Today would be no different with the rainy wetness, but there in Cuzco, it was about 30 degrees colder.   [Read more…]

Money Kills Journalism

June 8, 2013 by Source

By Bob Dorn

There’s only so much a few individuals can do against what more and more appears to be a remodeling of Mussolini’s corporate state, and only a bit more that a gathering of individuals like San Diego Free Press can. But I think The Freep is growing.

Every month I see a contribution from a talented writer whose name I hadn’t noticed before. I read comment lines from people who know more about the issues at stake in San Diego and the world than I can see in the Atlantic, Reuters, ABC, CNN, CBS and CBs..t sites of the nation’s overfed, paralyzed and monetized media.

The endurance of The Freep offers me at least one sure takeaway: money kills journalism.   [Read more…]

SoCal Edison Pulls the Plug on San Onofre Nuke Plant

June 7, 2013 by Doug Porter

By Doug Porter

Today’s news round up starts with the announcement from Southern California Edison saying that the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is finished. Kaput. Shutdown. Over.

Citing “continuing uncertainty about when or if it might return to service”, the company concluded that questions over when or if the plant might return to service was not good for customers or investors. Concerns about the environment or planet earth were not mentioned.

Since the shutdown of the nuclear power generating station in January of 2012, there has been an epic struggle over whether the plant could safely be returned to operating status.  A small radioactive leak in faulty steam tubes prompted the closure and subsequent questions over the plant’s processes and procedures have lead to protests, innumerable hearings and calls by California Senator Barbara Boxer for the Justice Department to investigate Southern California Edison and its statements to federal regulators about swapping out generators.   [Read more…]

NYC Launches Largest Bike-share Program in Nation – Will San Diego Ever Get Rolling?

June 7, 2013 by John P. Anderson

Start Up Delayed Until March 2014 – No Reason for Delay Given

By John Anderson

New York City launched a bike-share program last Monday, May 27.  The program, dubbed Citi Bike in a nod to corporate sponsor Citibank, had been the subject of much conversation and excitement (both positive and negative) in the months leading up to launch.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the country San Diego awaits the arrival of a bike-share program.  Announced in November 2012, the initial projection called for 1,800 bicycles in 180 stations.   [Read more…]

Military Sexual Assault – It’s the Culture

June 7, 2013 by Source

By Kathy Gilberd / On Watch

The military is once again in crisis over sexual assaults. In recent weeks, it has become more apparent than ever that the military’s sexual assault policy is a failure, and that sexual assault in the services has become epidemic.

In early May, the Department of Defense (DoD) released new figures showing a significant increase in reported and unreported assaults – DoD estimates that over 26,000 service members were assaulted in 2012, with only 3,374 of these cases reported to the military.

Just as the figures were released, the Air Force was rocked by news that the head of its Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program had been arrested for sexual battery. More recently, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for Ft. Hood was charged with sexual assault and pandering. On May 12, the Washington Post published an article recounting a number of incidents of sexual misconduct and sexual assault of potential recruits by military recruiters.   [Read more…]

Tuesday 6/4/13

From what we could tell, there were no signs of altitude sickness and Jenny didn’t wake up with a hangover. We slept in on purpose to get as much rest as possible. Water and coca tea had been our drinks of choice to stay well hydrated….   [Read more…]

SD For Free: Hiking in Tecolote Canyon Natural Park

June 6, 2013 by John P. Anderson

Natural beauty in the heart of the city

By John P. Anderson

Nestled in a coastal canyon just north-east of the intersection of Interstate 5 and Interstate 8 is the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park.  Despite being so near to these heavily trafficked freeways Tecolote Canyon is a peaceful, quiet place and a preserved open space in the heart of the city that presents visitors with a view to the native state of the area.  Work is ongoing to protect this open space from pollution and development and planting native plants to further complete the picture of the native state of the land.  The park was dedicated on April 1, 1978 after being purchased by the City of San Diego.   [Read more…]

NSA Phone Tap ‘Scandal’: Can We Finally Talk About What the Government is Doing to ‘Keep Us Safe’?

June 6, 2013 by Doug Porter

By Doug Porter

It’s a one topic day for this news roundup.

The Guardian newspaper has a major scoop on its hands. Reporter Glen Greenwald yesterday published a leaked copy of a Patriot Act Section 215 order. The order itself is the scoop, since Section 215 orders are secretly authorized by a secret court to tell individuals to take actions in secret.

Revealing the existence of one of these secret orders is against the law. So we can expect a Federal investigation with its own set of secret court orders into who leaked this document.

And, sorry conservatives, this isn’t anything unique to the Obama administration. Members of both parties have been playing this hush-hush sport for way too long. Before 9/11 even.   [Read more…]

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
