The average global temperature across land and ocean surfaces during September was 0.67°C (1.21°F) above the long-term 20th century average. The Southern Hemisphere also ranked second warmest on record, behind 1997. It was also the highest departure from average for any month in the Southern Hemisphere since May 2010.
Being Poor Is Knowing Exactly How Much Everything Costs
Editor’s note: Neither the presidential nor vice-presidential debates have addressed policies to help the growing poor underclass as more middle class people continue to slip into an impoverished state. Republicans continue to paint the poor as morally deficient–undisciplined, lazy and dependent upon big government. KPBS in San Diego is running a series about the poor among us. Tess Vigland interviews three families living in poverty in City Heights. Being poor is not easy.

Being poor is getting angry at your kids for asking for all the crap they see on TV.
Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they’re what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there’s not an $800 car in America that’s worth a damn. [Read more…]
Killings by Border Patrol to Be Reviewed After Congress Reacts to Rojas Death at San Ysidro
Bob Filner Among 16 Congressional Members Urging Review of Deadly Force Use by Border Patrol Agents
Since 2010, at least 16 civilians have been killed by Border Patrol agents along the US-Mexico border. Many of those killed were involved in throwing rocks at agents during confrontations with border smugglers.
Yet, since September, there have been three persons killed by agents – including the young mother of 5 who was a US citizen right here in Chula Vista. The three also include 16-year-old suspected rock thrower from Nogales.
Sex In San Diego: If This Isn’t Porn What Is It?
By A feleségül
Many times over the past several years, I have read about people responding to ads on craigslist.com only to find themselves in positions that have caused death, robbery, rape, etc. I decided to do a little research and find out what I could regarding this horrific statistic.
When I went to the craigslist.com site, there were so many individual listings – nine headings with more than 100 sub listings – that I decided to focus in on only one – Personals. There were nine sub-titles under this listing, and I will not discuss all of them, but for interest purposes the subheadings are Strictly Platonic, Women Seek Women, Women Wanting Men, Men Wanting Women, Men Wanting Men, Misc. Romance, Casual Encounters, Missed Connections and Rants and Raves. [Read more…]

She requested the sacraments to the end and she knew God’s love, patience, and forgiveness. Compounding other illnesses, Tina fell into unconsciousness after suffering two strokes on October 3rd and she passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14, 2012.
“Autism Voices” Advocates to Be Heard During Presidential Campaign
New Initiative Launched in San Diego and Across Nation
Gearing up for the November 6 election, Autism Speaks has started a new grassroots initiative called Autism Votes to advocate for people with Autism and their families to ensure that their voice is heard and their issues addressed by the candidates. This is not an effort to endorse a candidate but to get issues affecting people with Autism to the national spotlight. The Autism Votes campaign made it’s most recent splash in the ongoing campaign to get Autism advocacy addressed in the presidential debates. [Read more…]
Obama Hits Back
After ceding round one to Mitt Romney, President Obama comes out swinging in round two.
After a totally and completely lackluster performance two weeks ago in Denver, Barack Obama roared back in the second presidential debate with Republican challenger Mitt Romney. The president who seemed annoyed and disengaged two weeks ago was nowhere to be found. The challenger who was so supremely confident and in control two weeks ago got a taste of his own medicine, and was knocked down a few pegs for the privilege.

The Continuing Saga of City Heights Capital Improvements in the Time of Austerity
The City Heights Area Planning Committee (CHAPC) meeting held on Monday October 15 was spent presenting information and answering questions about the capital projects on the master list; a bare-bones list of projects that includes the installation of sidewalks, street lights, drainage projects, a number of small parks, renovations for a senior center, repairs to the police shooting range and a new fire station. During the course of the meeting committee members and the audience were given the opportunity to add additional projects to the list.
On November 5 the CHAPC will decide upon a prioritized capital project list. Their goal is to present the top five projects. I encouraged them to submit every single project as a number one priority for the community. I was dead serious. Jim Varnadore responded that while the committee didn’t dispute the validity of doing so, the City would impose its own prioritization. I responded that the City does that anyway and that their ranking process is not transparent.

Desde la Logan – The Grand Orchid of Our Barrio: Chicano Park
By Brent E. Beltrán
On Thursday, October 11 the architecturally aware people of San Diego got together to celebrate the annual Orchids & Onions awards at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. This annual event of architecture snobs serves as a fundraiser for the San Diego Architectural Foundation.
Local TV personality Sam the Cooking Guy MC’d the ceremony that hands out Orchids to new architecture projects that the foundation likes and Onions to those they think, well, suck. This year’s program received 149 nominations. Of which 134 were for Orchids and 15 for Onions. Nineteen awards total were given out.
What makes this year’s event worthy of writing about in a column about Chicanos and Barrio Logan is that the foundation’s Grand Orchid, the top prize of the ceremony, was given to Chicano Park and the Mural Restoration Project. Normally they recognize buildings but this year they stepped outside their narrow box and gave the award to a public space. A Chicano one at that! [Read more…]
An Old Time Favorite: “Studio Diner”
Almost a year ago I purchased a special coupon for the STUDIO DINER and, since it was one of my favorite restaurants, decided to ask one of my favorite people – Joe – to go with me and use it before it expired. And we had a grand time, because we had to spend $35 to benefit by the $25 discount.
I am surprised at how many people do not know about the Studio Diner. To quote their own page, “Wrapped in chrome, the diner is a welcome roadside stop. And, fittingly, it’s set on the lot of a working movie and TV studio, Stu Segall Productions. (Remember “Silk Stalkings” and “Renegade”? Currently filming “Terriers”.)
Decorated with “behind-the-scenes” movie-making equipment and serving comfort food with an upscale vibe, Studio Diner is fun for the senses. [Read more…]
