When is the Gospel Not the Truth? More on the La Jolla ‘Christmas’ Parade

July 2, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Several months ago I wrote an article about the possibility of changing the name of the “La Jolla Christmas Parade” to something that did not connote a religious theme. I pointed out that almost every parade during the month of December had changed their title from a “Christmas theme” to a more generic one, thus entailing more enjoyment and enthusiasm for the total population rather than a select few.

One of the references I used was a three paragraph summary of the anti semitism that had existed in La Jolla for many years. I found that reference in the “La Jolla” section of Wikipedia .

I was very surprised when one of the readers of my original article called to inform me that those references no longer existed; and, in fact, there was only a small paragraph where the three used to be and it practically negated the original paragraphs.   [Read more…]

Online Purchasing: Similar to “Online Dating?”

June 28, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

In the past few years, I have found that I do a lot of purchasing from online companies. Lured by free shipping and no tax, I figure I have saved a bundle of money during these purchasing frenzies.

In the past year or so, I have stepped away from Amazon.com and started buying items that are specifically designed to be used in San Diego.  And have I been burned – at least initially.   [Read more…]

Sex In San Diego: The Drought is Affecting More than the Water Table

June 12, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

The well has run dry! There is nothing to be had anywhere. Life is a sad, lonely spiral, as the tap only trickles its remaining rust and dirt from the spigot. What the hell is she talking about, you ask? On line dating, of course!

I’ve tapped into Zoosk. I turned the spigot off on eHarmony. I cleaned out the faucet on Mingle. I prayed for a good catch at JD. I fished at Plenty of Fish. I didn’t care if I was overweight at Big and Beautiful People Meet. I didn’t lie about my age at Senior People Meet. It wasn’t my time at OurTime.com. There were no rich men at RichMen.com. There were no matches at Match.com and several other sites that I don’t remember for I was with them a very short time.   [Read more…]

“If They Didn’t Have Bad Luck They’d Have No Luck At All”

June 11, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Have you ever wondered why some people have “good luck” while others continually have “bad luck”? Have you ever wondered what can be done to change the bad luck to good luck? Four leaf clovers? Horseshoes? Crossed Fingers? Prayers? Good Thoughts?

Let me tell you about a young couple – V. & D. – and their two children – L. and K., that I have been mentoring since they were students at Job Corps in 2003-4. They came to us as individuals; she had had some emotional trauma in her life, he was a former druggie.  (Not uncommon for Job Corps students, because almost all of them are “at risk” students – ages 16-24 – that are unprepared for the future.)

Restaurant Review: Koon Thai Kitchen

June 8, 2013 by Judi Curry

Koon Thai Kitchen

San Diego, CA 92111

Several years ago, just after my husband died, I began to going to physical therapy for two torn rotator cuffs that developed because I had to lift Bob in and out of the wheelchair. On my first visit I met a delightful receptionist – Bettye – that was enrolled in a nursing program at a nearby college. As I continued to go for therapy several times a week, a friendship developed and she told me that she had decided to drop the nursing program and become an Occupational Therapist instead. I told her that when she graduated I would take her to lunch.   [Read more…]

Writing for the San Diego Free Press

June 6, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Fifty-seven years ago I said to my first husband – Ed – that I wanted to be a writer.  He laughed at me and told me that I didn’t have the intelligence to write; did not have any experiences to write about, and I should forget that goal.  I was 17 at the time.  (Yes, I was married very young.  I was also stupid, a fact that I hope has changed over the years!)

In the back of my mind, as I wrote essays, thesis’, opinions, case studies, etc. to obtain my Master’s Degree, I always remembered Ed’s comments to me.  As I taught my students English and Creative Writing skills, I wondered how I could be a successful teacher with so few “experiences” under my belt. When more and more of my students were producing wonderful writings, I began realizing that Ed may have been right then, but he no longer was correct in his perception of my abilities – we were only married 10 years so many things had changed. Basically, I grew up!

Restaurant Review: Pho Convoy

June 1, 2013 by Judi Curry

Pho Convoy
4648 Convoy St., #101-B
San Diego, CA 92111
858-277-0133

By Judi Curry

When I reviewed “Saigon” a few weeks ago, I likened that restaurant to one that my husband and I liked many years ago. That restaurant was “Pho Convoy”.  The “gang of five” that were part of the “Saigon” group suggested that we try Pho Convoy and make a comparison of the two.

Last night we set out to do just that.  Three of us are journalists for the San Diego Free Press – Anna, Rich, and myself, along with George and Mary who were visiting from D.C.   [Read more…]

The Cost of Staying Beautiful

May 28, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

People that know me know that the only make-up I wear is mascara and eyeshadow. I probably wouldn’t wear that if my eyelashes weren’t blond – or is it gray now – and I like to highlight my blue eyes.  But recently I have started dating – bad word – “going out with” – younger men and after changing the lights in my bathroom have discovered wrinkles I never knew I had. (Of course, having cataract surgery has helped (?) my vision.)

About the time I discovered a “road map” on my face, I attended a women’s conference where I was given free samples of “remove the wrinkles” cream; had my eyebrows “plucked” using thread (?); had a facial that made my dry skin feel vibrant, etc.  Even though I am a creature of habit, I never used any of the samples daily because I, quite simply,  forgot.  I’m one of those people that apply lipstick by rote. If I were to look in a mirror while applying it I would find it all over my face.

I shouldn’t tell you, but, of course you know I will, that I failed “How to teach Art to Elementary School Students” twice. Yes. TWICE!   [Read more…]

This Widder’s Got Her Dander Up About Ralph’s New Checkout Lanes!

May 24, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry (aka the Widder Curry)

As the “mother” of my household – put the emphasis wherever you think it should be – I do all of the grocery shopping.  My feet are not anchored in cement, and I shop at a variety of stores – CostCo; Barons; Stumps; Vons; Ralph’s, etc.  I like various things at different stores. (I used to shop at Sprouts until they fired an employee I liked.)

My main shopping store is Ralph’s, for a variety of reasons: I use their pharmacy and all my prescriptions are on file there; the items that I purchase are lower there than at other stores; they have the variety of items that I frequently look for.  I seldom buy my produce there because I think they are over-priced, under-ripe, and outdated. I shop there at least once a week; sometimes twice.

Today, when I did a relatively large shopping trip, I noticed that the checkout area had a new configuration. An annoying one.   [Read more…]

From the Wrestling Mat to the Dance Floor

May 23, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

I hope that some of you remember the story about my grandson Colin and his goal to win a medal in the Nationals in wrestling and go on to Stanford on a wrestling scholarship.  Colin, you might remember, is 14 and had just placed 3rd in his division at the nationals held in Las Vegas a few weeks back.  Colin is an excellent athlete – excels in all sports he likes.

There is one other “sport” that he excels in that I want to tell you about.

When he entered the 6th grade he was told that “Ballroom Dancing” was a requirement. He was so upset that he cried and wanted to switch schools. He did not want to take the class, but since it was mandated, he had no choice.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Saigon

May 21, 2013 by Judi Curry

Saigon
4455 El Cajon Blvd.
San Diego, CA 92115
619-284-4215

By Judi Curry

How does one review a restaurant when the menu runs 19 pages?  How does one review a restaurant when there are 8 people eating at the same table and each one orders something else?  This is going to be a challenge.  A lot will be done by pictures.

Five of us arrived at the restaurant early – 7:00 – and decided to order appetizers while waiting for the others to join us.  Our hosts, Anna and Rich, selected an order of Vietnamese egg rolls, (Cha Gio) that were made with tofu, lettuce, and served with a nice fish sauce. The cost for 6 rolls was $4.95. In addition, an order of pork rolls ($3.25) and an order of Shrimp and Pork rolls ($3.25) was ordered.

By the time all of the guests arrived, so had the appetizers and we all delighted in trying everything that was put on the lazy susan in front of us.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Giorgino’s

May 19, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Giorgino’s
1237 28th Street
San Diego, CA 92102
619-234-9141

Giorgino’s is run by three brothers – Mario – who has owned the restaurant for 6 years; Giovanni and Gabriel. In addition, friends and other relatives work there at various times during the week, and it is a truly family run business. Unfortunately, Mario was not there this evening.

The menu is very extensive. They boast of the “Best Cheesesteaks in Town” and they feature Amoroso Rolls – so soft an succulent they melt in your mouth; Dietz and Watson Meats and Cheeses, along with John Taylor’s Pork Roll and Wise Chips and Tastybakes. They also have beer on tap. Because there are so many items on the menu, I would like to mention only a few besides those listed above, there are hot sandwiches, pork rolls, cold sandwiches, wings, tenders, burgers and dogs with salads, antipasto, pasta dishes, and desserts. They also do catering.   [Read more…]

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
